Current mood:waitin' for it

FF.net strikes again
December 13th, 2003 -- The chapter system is not to be used as placeholder for non-story content such as author notes. You can add short author notes to the beginning or at the end of stories but never as individual chapters.

The above clarification of existing guidelines is effective immediately for all entries. We recommend all writers to review their entries to and make the appropriate changes when necessary. There will be a 10 day grace period before the site actively enforces the rule.

And the noose tightens a little more.

Edit: I should have made clear why I was posting this - my apologies. Mostly it was because I figured this move would precipitate another FF.net-centered wankstorm. The noose in question was meant to refer to the fact that every time they make a move over there, people fall apart, like how a noose tends to tighten if whatever caught in it wiggles. I can see how it could easily be taken to mean that I thought the FF.net people were tightening a noose. That's what I get for trying to be clever and wit-tay.

How brilliant.
Because we just know that it is such a *hassle* for the readers to have the authors notes nicely collected in a moving chapter - not to mention the "thank you's" to reviewers! Who doesn't want to open a new chapter only to realise that half is store while the other half is completely uninteresting blatherings?

I just wonder if some moron actually complained about this to ff.net or if they came up with it all by themselves?

I don't have an issue with this. I hate finding chapters which are solely author's notes in the middle of a story, and I really don't like it when I think a WIP has been updated only to find the new 'chapter' is just a note promising a new chapter soon. I think some of the authors who write solely for reviews have a tendency to do this, to push their story back up to the top of the listing.

I've read their TOS a few times, including when I first joined about 2 years ago. That's been in there. You're not supposed to post chapters which are nothing but notes or messages. That was in the TOS when I joined, that's been in the TOS.

They're bringing it up like this because people don't frelling read the bloody thing, and lately the teenies have been using it as a way to leave scathing retorts to reviewers and flaming other people and all that rot.

They're not tightening the noose. That rule's actually existed for quite a while.

My thoughts exactly. I've reported people for doing stuff like this, and the chapter got deleted. I don't get what this is about a ten-day waiting period when they've been doing this all along. Maybe there was disagreement among the ff.net staff about it?

Oh... well, it's been a long time since I gave a damn what happens to my junk on FFN. My stupidly long fic does have all the notes at the end as a separate chapter - but they can erase it for all I care.

So in the wars of "OMG MI FREEDOM!!!" and "You illiterate cretins, you were never supposed to do that in the first place!" I rate a "cretin who could care less."

I haven't touched FFN with a ten foot pole since the NC-17 purge, because of:

1. The nasty underhanded little way they did it, namely by pretending to shut the site down for a '9/11 tribute'.

2. Their juvenile answers to fair and balanced questions from their authors.

3. The way they deleted my account even with 2 months of paid service left - making it impossible to collect all my reviews for posterity, etc.

Gee, me? Hold a big honking grudge? Nah...surely not.

This little temper tantrum of theirs doesn't really register on the rictor scale - even I remember it in the TOS from when I joined in 2000.

I am still not sure - that would have involved an actual answer to my emails to the management. *grin* All but one of my 20-some odd fics were NC-17. I removed the one remaining out of general principle, sent an email asking why they didn't do things in a more aboveboard fashion, etc, and asked for a refund of my paid time. Then when I got home from work and went to download my reviews so I could be shut of them, my account was gone. Grrr. Argh.

I'm only still there because I use one little story to whore my site (I think that's against TOS). That and I joined before it went live (and before it became Kiddieland). I don't know why I hang onto it, it's not like people can't find my stuff if they look for it. (wankity wank four digit user number wank wank certain there's smaller numbers than me wank)

That's DISGUSTING! I totally didn't know about this one. I never had any NC-17 stuff, but sheesh, this really pisses me off. Sorry to hear what they did to your paid account.

FF.net is pretty much bog-standard (grr pop-up ads IE bad Mozilla Firebird good) and I was considering taking down all my stuff (I have my own site, I haven't written a 'fic in months and I don't really care about reviews, etc.)...this just sealed the deal. Thanks.

As the previous posters have said, it's been in the TOS for a while now. And it's good that they're finally enforcing that. I mean, shit, when I was in the Naruto fandom, there were quite a few stories I would be elated to see updated, only to see it's an author's note. I have only one story that is more than a chapter long on ff.n, and it's not that much to take the clarification and tack it on to the end of the last chapter.

I stopped using ffnet's "quality" services quite some time ago, so nothing they do really bothers me anymore.

But saying that, I'm kinda glad they're getting round to enforcing this rule.

Hell I don't even think it's annoying. I'm glad they're finally enforcing this because I find it far more annoying to have to read through pages and pages of author's notes.

If there's wank here it's coming from the OP who reaction seems to be 'OMG their taking away my FREEDOM!'.

This could be a "look, look, we have incoming wank! XD" sort of thing. ::shrugs:: Hell, if something's gonna be big enough, it's almost as fun to snark at it before it explodes as it is during. ^_^v

And they finally got around to checking to see if accusations of "She flamed me!' were true, rather than automatically deleting the story and account.

Me, now, I'd have a rule that anyone who reported a story had their account go on hiatus until the accusation was investigated. Users making false claims would be booted, and forfeit any paid services to the person they made the claim against.

I think Xing dropped by fanficrants once to say that they were working on a way to appeal that sort of thing for a certain time period, and until then they wouldn't delete anything completely. Not sure what exactly that entails or if it's ever going to actually happen, though...

The only good stories on ffn are ones I've already found elsewhere, I've noted. Authors just post them there to pick up fangirl and/or fandom ignorant readers?

I dunno. I gave up slogging through there regularly even before NC-17 went bye-bye. Damn prequel fans. I took such perverse joy in all the 'Obi-Wan takes you and fucks you senseless' stories getting swept out.

I'm sure there's a few stray good fics out there that I'm missing, but the sheer eye-sporking badness of the vast majority of the dreck on ff.net just makes it a death wish to actually go through their archives.

I used to post there in order to give my fic as wide a distribution as possible. Gave it up, but still get the occasional review. My stuff is buried so deeply I can't imagine anyone finding it.

Got some serious (or maybe not so serious) flamage of the "You prevert! Han is not Gay!!@!!!11111" variety more than once. One from someone who demanded I change the Luke/Han story to Luke/Leia. Oh yeah, slash we can't deal with, but incest is cool...

~shrug~ It's in the rules. It's always, to my knowledge, been in the rules. They're just trying to whack it trhough people's heads that, yes, it's a rule... and a bloody good rule. Chapters full of author's notes, those I find wanky. Any author's notes beyond a brief paragraph register in my "boring self-indulgence" scale, especially the ones who thank every reviewer individually in public, or like to dissect their own writing style and thoughts ad nauseum.

My major problem with ff.net is that despite several people regularly "suggesting" it, they still won't bloody well put up an Enid Blyton section. ~grin~

Since there's a recent rant on FF.net, apparently, one of the most [in]famous HP slash fics, Frizzy's "Magnetic Attraction", got deleted within the past day or two by FF.net admins.

It did have sex scenes but I wouldn't consider them extremely graphic. So, now there are fangirls going 'oh my gawd!!!1112 what will we do'. I agree with another girl about the amount of emails concerning this getting *old* fast.

These fangirls speculated on someone being jealous of Frizzy because she had over 6,000 reviews (last time I saw weeks ago).

The amusing part being this story has Harry/Draco (if that hasn't scared folk off) where Harry is a femme!bitch with more pastel nightwear than some gals... and the set-up wasn't suppose to be humourous.

Dina
