Current mood:*sporfle!*

That's why I love her!
Not so much a wank as a practical joke, our beloved [info]redpanda taunts her own LJ community with a fake LOTR spoiler. Let's watch!

ETA: Duelist is annoyed, but not too annoyed to cut-and-paste.

I have to admit, the first time I saw that icon I thought, "Man, the Tolkien readers are going to HAVE JACKSON'S ARSE if he's really done that!"

*sigh* We're all gullible in our own special ways.

I would have been gullible, too, if I hadn't already seen the movie. Whew!

The icon is awesome, but that thread, if possible, is better.

And you know, it would probably freak out the fangirls even worse to hear what actually DOES happen to him eventually. ;)

Also: I was so tempted to say, "But, of course, if it had Orlando Bloom's face in the background of every page, you'd just fly right through it" to the bitch who complained about it being too hard to read Tolkien. I mean, it is a difficult read, but...bitch, are you for real?

Where's the howler monkeys from the Christopher Lee wank? Shouldn't they be in here complaining about people that point out that the book is older than dirt and get all smug over the spoilers and such?

Blah.

The icon wanking is hysterical but the "per se" grammar wanking is even better. There's no wank like misspelled words wank.

Wow, I am having so much trouble not posting a comment to Duelist. Something along the lines of, "Sweetie, you are less of a LoTR fan. Not only are you a fan of the adaptation and not the original work . . . but you are pretty blatantly insulting the original work. The books are LoTR."

Buuut. That would, first of all, be trolling. And secondly, it would be . . . elitest.

Wow, I'm an eval elitest Tolkien bitch. *grin*

Man, that's hilarious. I made icons earlier today that basically say "Read the freaking book" on them, and almost immediately I got called a holier-than-thou elitist.

So then, I made this icon. Because without the book, they wouldn't have their precious movies.

Yeah, I posted, because really I'm just a big wanker. XD

But really. When I looked at the icons, I went "What? Someone's going to KILL Peter Jackson." Then I blinked and went. "Haha, someone's fucking with someone."

How people couldn't look at the icons and know is beyond me. I mean no offense to [info]redpanda when I say it, but yeah.

But then, that would be logical, wouldn't it?

I'd hate to think what you think of Jane Austen, Ann Rice, Ann Macaffery, Patrica C. Wrede and others. Since you do have to, my gods, actaully think while you read them.

AHAHAHAH. Anne Rice. AHAHAHAHA.

Camus! Dammit, I miss college. I have no one to discuss books with anymore.

*hugs her books and weeps*

I love the pretentiousness that's going on in Duelist's LJ. "I've even ~taught~ Tolkien to HS students, so obviously I'm in a position to look down on anybody involved in this" is the general gist of what I get from at least one person in there. If you can't finish reading the books because they're not your style, that's one thing, but to not finish them and then whine that someone told you the ending is the epitome of idiocy. You can read books you don't necessarily like or find boring. It happens in school all the time (hellllloooooooooooo War and Peace). Kudos to Redpanda for tweaking the nose of people like Duelist.

From here:

My guess is that these people are no different than anyone else, and I'm betting it took them a few reads to actually understand every aspect of the book - if they even managed to grasp them all. They just like to feel special because they're "true fans" who came out before the movies blah blah blah.

Holy shit! The Wank-O-Meter-- it's off the charts!

Things I Do Not Get
[info]lush_rimbaud

Just because we haven't read the books doesn't make us any less LotR fans.

Meh?

See, I don't think that people who don't like the Lord of the Rings books are necessarily stupid, or evil, or infested with parasites, or anything like that. But I don't understand why somebody who thinks that the books are badly written and hideously boring would be bothered by the suggestion that they're not a fan. Yes, all right, you liked the movie, so you're a fan of the movie, which is great; I love the movies too. But there's so much in the books that wasn't in the movie that I don't see how someone who hasn't read them can really participate in the fandom. You can't write good fanfiction, you can't really understand the characters' backgrounds and motives, you can't write long wanky essays about Teh Deep Symbolism Of It All, you're less involved with the source material and you don't like it as much... ergo, you're less of a fan. That doesn't make you a bad person or an idiot, and it doesn't mean you miss out on any True Fan benefits (are there any?). You're just, you know, less of a fan. I liked the Spiderman movie and I'm looking forward to the sequel, but I can't really get into the original comic book series. So, yeah, I'm less of a fan than someone who's been reading the comics avidly since birth. That's not a negative judgement about me; it's just a statement of fact.

Also, although I understand people who just don't like Tolkien's writing style -- or, well, I don't understand them, but I can just figure that there's no accounting for taste -- I do think that people who find Tolkien impossible to follow are, just maybe, just a little bit stupid. Because dude, I read the book and understood it fine for the first time when I was six. It can't be that difficult to read.

And -- last and final Comment of Wankiness -- what is it with some of the anti-book people? I understand they resent True Fans who think that they're all ditzy illiterates. That must be aggravating. Okay. But still, when they go on and on about how hideous and horrible the books are, why are they surprised that the book fans don't respond with something along the lines of "Ah, what an interesting point you raise! Tolkien's books are actually horribly boring -- what a fascinating way of looking at the series...." Because, guys, if you go up to someone and say, "Hey, you know your favorite book in the world? The one you've read twenty times, the one that shaped your writing style and your values and the way you think about your life? Well, guess what? It sucks!" -- if you do that, you really shouldn't unbelievably surprised and wounded when the person in question responds by insulting your mother or your intelligence.

Anyway, sorry to go on so long.
