So the Foxtrot feed over on LJ has been playing up the geek vs Orli!fangirl with Jason and Paige all week.

In today's humorous strip somebody makes a random 'Legolas dies!' joke. Lots of people join in on the fun. Some get a little snippy for being spoiled. Some are just annoyed with the jokes.

The best comment is another 'spoiler':
In case anybody isn't fake spoilered enough...

at the end, when frodo gets to mount doom, he sees this guy in a long black jacket with sun glasses. The guy offeres a red pill and a blue pill. Frodo, in a little hobbity panic, tries to run away. But the guy in black, the black guy in black, holds him down and force feeds him a pill. Frodo passes out. When he comes to, he finds that he's laying on sand and there's an old man in a brown robe. This men helps frodo recover. Frodo goes on to get a lightsaber and saves the galaxy. And everybody was happy. Middle earth was just a part of the Matrix, there is no ring, and the new republic is doing well. The end.

Indigo's whining about it AGAIN? I guess she'll keep trying until she gets some sympathy.

Of course. She's Indigo, and will keep whining until someone rushes in to comfort her if it takes all damn day.

What I find terribly amusing, is that what she's complaining about she actually did a few years ago. Told someone that her favourite character died in the next issue of his comic, then when called on it said that everyone knew it was a joke. Except that unlike this incident, the comic hadn't been released yet. (Let alone out for fifty damn years.) And we knew from the promo that one of two was going to bite it, so it wasn't entirely unlikely, it just didn't happen.

She got angry when people told her that was rude, too. At least all the people saying 'gullible much' are telling them it's a joke, not letting them go on sobbing over Orlando's tragic demise.

Oh, is this my axe? Grinding it? MOI?

Hm. The new fake spoiler is somewhat amusing, but would have been a lot funnier with better delivery.

I still can't believe people take those jokes seriously. I mean...really. LJ icons aren't exactly the best sources for current events or literary comments :D

Especially the ones that say, "Hey fangirls." If you fall for that, you deserve to be spoiled

Yes, and then we find out that they were all wrong, that it was Sauron's wedding ring, (the invisibilty thing being very useful when it's time to take the trash out, or slip out for a night of drinking with the boys) and he just wants it back because his wife's throwing a fit over it and making him sleep on the couch.

But I thought Sauron was going out with Saruman and Wormtongue was just the latter's side dish...

With the wonders of mpreg and slash, it is totally possible.

The whole "I haven't read the books! I don't want to read any spoilers! I want a pony!" contingent just makes me want to scream. It is. not. possible. to release "spoilers" for a book that has been in print for half a century and read by much of the English-speaking world!

My favorite was this comment, in which the poster says:
dude, that guy up there wasn't saying anything that really happens. legolas doesn't die. a real spoiler would be something like...
and then proceeds to describe in detail the ring finale, prompting not a blink from Ms "How dare you spoil me?!1!" Apparently it only counts as a spoiler if it's about Legolas...

I want to see what happens if someone mentions the whole Legolas/Gimli sailing away thing.

Yeah, that's about what I said last time it came up. If they heard that their preciousssssss sailed off into the sunset with the short hairy guy... yeah. I'd like to see that shitstorm.

It's not to be, though, unless someone clues them in about the books.

Spoilers, let me try this trick: highlight, if it works
* They skip Gimli and Legolas' fate entirely in the movie, at least in this version. IIRC they're last seen at Aragorn's coronation. *

[on preview: w00t, it seems to work.]
