Piratesorka complains about how the fandom doesn't need deathfics.

Where does she get off telling people what not to write? O.o She may not like it, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't write it.. right?

Did you see the comment where she claims she's been "victimized" by death fic? I'm no fan of death fic, but I manage to get around that by, you know, not reading it. And yes, I do realize not all stories are labeled, so sometimes completely avoiding is impossible, but jesus fucking christ. Reading something you don't like makes you a victim now? I wonder if I can sue Anne Rice for damages...

What is "deathfic", exactly? Because if it's just a fic where one of the characters dies, then I can see why you WOULDN'T label it.
(Seems like some people want every last little possibly shocking thing listed in the message header or something so their delicate little sensibilities aren't bothered by reading it. I find this roughly analagous to wanting a novel completely summarized on the inside cover, including exactly how it ends and who gets together with who.)

Well, to be fair some of the responses were quite wanky too, simply by being a little bit too dramatic to such a short, unelaborate post. I mean, the chick removing her deathfic from the community for example. oh wah wah wah.

I don't like deathfic, so I don't read it. I have to say I don't understand why anyone writes it - I think it's got to do with some need to vicariously experience that kind of emotion through the fabrication of a beloved actor's death and I think that's - strange on a number of levels because the first question I have to ask is WHY do they need to get that feeling. But hey, if people like it, I don't really care. I just won't personally read it.

The whole thing is a wank, but not a very big one. On the whole it just demonstrates how waaaaay too seriously people take fandoms and fanfic.

	I'm pretty soured on death in fics myself; I've yet to see a very good example, and there is a lot of crap. But I guess, barring those extreme examples of idiocy, it's better to be open-minded and not begrudge people their entertainment. (And suicide fic is a slightly different distinction.) For what it's worth I think deathfic is done for many reasons, from shameless attempts at audience manipulation, to it being necessary for the storyline to work.

But yeah this falls under the same old 'don't like don't read' song, with a side of 'please label fics'.

I was ranting to someone about this last night. The story in question was labeled quite clearly as a death fic.

Of course, it's far more wankier when canon actually has the character dying. Back in the day when "The Phantom Menace" was the up and coming fandom nary a week went by without someone complaining about a death fic. You know, with Qui-Gon dying or dead. "OMG my life has no meaning.

	Eh, my only real objection to deathfic is how it tends to turn characters into whiny blubbering gobs of jello that i just can't picture them being. LOTR RPS is a great example of that. Some of the Viggorli death fics...ugh. Though i admit i still have a place in my cold twisted heart for the fic where Craig Parker strangles Orlando to death and then shoots himself.
