My first real wank, and it looks like it's gonna be a doozy...
yuki_onna posts to Metaquotes, over on lj:

Look, someone had to say it.

From
[info]jupitah

I think Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix could be prescribed to treat insomnia. I picked it up this evening and fuck it's boring.

In the comments, you can see her complaining that JKR screwed with mythology, getting defensive about making her statement, and grumbling about how nobody reads anything else these days.

It's still quiet and relatively small, but I think she's being pretty wanky about it.

who reads The Neverending Story anymore? Or The Last Unicorn? Or The Odyssey, Beowulf, Peter Pan, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Gawain and the Green Knight

omg kewlz we like had the same curriculum for our English classes!!

*rolls eyes* Bitch, please. Maybe your average online HP fan talks so much about the books because they're, hmmm, I don't know -- in HP fandom? Why would they start talking about Beowulf and Hrothgar in the middle of their latest Snarry fics? She needs to shove her Chronicles of Narnia up her condescending arse.

[She needs to shove her Chronicles of Narnia up her condescending arse.]

May I metaquote you on that?

Hell I get that she's not in HP, she thinks it's boring. Fine, I think CS Lewis and Tolkein are boring.

But she lost me when she starts whining about how 'no researches mythology!' and how HP fans are being fucking 'inaccurate' about mythological creatures.

Cause I know I can just pop down to the local zoo to see if Phoenixes actually cry, or dragons do breath fire!

I was just really, really amused that she got totally pissy when people defended HP, because how dare they say she had no right to her own opinion, but then claimed that anyone who didn't like Tolkien was clearly just too stupid to understand what he'd been trying to do.

Not that it's hypocritical of her to suggest that what she like is above reproach by any intelligent person but what she doesn't like is obviously just trash, or anything. Really. She's just obviously so much smarter than the rest of us plebes that her opinion should be considered fact.

This is her second reported wank from the same MetaQuotes community in less than a week, I believe.

"Actually, I have seen many, many people lately trashing Tolkien. It irks me. I did a whole defense of it in my journal. I generally think the criticisms come from not understanding what Tolkien was trying to accomplish--equating his goals with those of modern fantasy writers." (http://www.livejournal.com/community/metaquotes/563170.html?thread=1139170#t1139170)

So... because you didn't want an explanation of what Reading Rainbow was *and I'm thinking you've probably heard of it, since everyone and their brother has seen at least one episode* you and she are *different*. O_o

But at least that brings back pleasantly fruity memories of 'Weiß Rainbow' and Crawford in a Team Rocket outfit. *I have to tell you about that sometime. ^^*

God the fucking pretentious wankerism of this one, it makes me boggle and want to hit her over the head with my Riverside Shakespeare. Or actually Bullfinch's Mythology would be more appropriate now that I think about it.

She's probably the type who'd argue one particular version of classical mythology too, even though the Greeks and Romans rewrote all the damn things so many times as to render it impossible to say there's one version of anything.

[Personally, I wish everyone so wrapped up in fandom would direct that energy into writing their own books--how many wonderful worlds would be created that way! I am just biased on the side of originality.]

I really need to get some 'Bitch Please' icons.

Of course everyone in the HP wants to be a writer! Just like everyone who saw Return of the King wants to be a director!

It's utterly impossible for people to simply want to discuss the characters and the world without having another motive involved.

Way to generalize hon.

Heh. I love it when folks go off on how fanfiction writers will never develop the skills they need to publish if they don't give up on the fanfic and work solely on original fic. Whenever I try to explain to them that some people (ME) don't care about ever being published, they get very confused:

"But you'll never be a professional writer!"
"I don't want to be a professional writer."
"But you'll never be published!"
"That is true."
"Don't you WANT to be published?"
"No, not really."
"But you'll never be a professional writer!"

Fuuuuck. I read a hell of a lot, too, but d'you see me claiming it makes me oh-so-much-smarter than the average journaller? Fuckit, fuckit, fuckit.

I keep ending up classed among the dildoes because I share some of the same habits of flatulent, self-absorbed, self-important, egotistical, posturing Baron Harkonnenish netizens - namely, a liking of the larger words (English has a bazillion great words, I like to use them, they are fun, so neener) and a liking of the dead tree.

(*headdeskery*)

I apologise for the frothing soapboxiness of this post, but pretentious asswads are making reading and writing less fun, and nosirree I don't like it.

Oh, for chrissake! >_< Will she shut the hell up with the prententious wanking on mythology already?

I can sort of understand two points:

1) I found the Harry Potter stuff to be as boring as all hell myself. The characters just didn't appeal to me. (Well, I admit to liking to Hermione, but only because I got to 'know' the character since she's Filia's roommate in a multifandom RPG - and I play Filia.)

2) Yes, it would get rather irritating to present a longer-accepted standard for Mythology, only to get to told "OMG taht is SO not true!!one!!! I know so bcuz I read Harry Potter and tehy sadi so!!one!!1eleven!!"

But the rest of it? Take a look at my icon.

Cracks me up how she keeps going "Fanfic is a waste of time/energy! They should write REAL things! I'm biased on the side of originality!" And by "cracks me up" I mean "extremely cheeses me off".

Trust me, hon, if someone actually has the desire and the discipline to write original fic, writing fanfic is NOT going to sap some mythical limited reservoir of creativity. Just ask all the people who write BOTH fanfic AND original fic. Both at the same time! Incredible! How could it happen?

Yarr.

ahahahahahahahahahahahaha. She deleted it! Damn it, it's totally my fault, too. And I had no idea she was going to delete it, or I would have save the emailed comments from her, they were choice. I was able to get a bit from one of my posts (which quoted one of hers) by hitting the back button on my browser, though.

She responded to me saying she's a lit grad student and therefore singularly qualified to speak on this subject, and anyway, she only says that people who have problems with Tolkien don't understand him because, and I quote, "No one has yet addressed what I think are the problems with him, they just whine about the poetry." She also said that her journal says she's an elitist asshat, so I should have known what to expect.

I responded:

My god, not everyone has the same problems with Tolkien you do? You're absolutely right, they must be completely lacking in critical faculties!

and

I haven't seen your journal, and I have no expectations of you whatsoever. You made multiple elitist, pretentious and hypocritical statements in a public community, I saw them, and I commented. Simple as that.

She responded that I had no right to make any statement about her if I hadn't read her journal and her long essay on Tolkien, suggesting that I would be particularly interested in her opinion of people who call others elitist and pretentious (and you know, I bet I could predict what she has to say damn near word for word, but I really don't care enough to look - her pseudo-scholarly preachings in the comments was bad enough), that she was neither elitist or pretentious (that 'elitist asshat' thing in her LJ is not meant to be taken seriously, apparently), and that I had no right to call her names.

I went to respond (mostly I was just really curious what names she thought I'd called her), and voila! Post deleted. *snerk* Maybe we'll get lucky and there will be a big bitchfest in her LJ about all the pathetic plebes she was burdened with today...
