Warning! May cause Wanking to Occur!
Ok, so...this is a wank just begging to happen. From the lovely forum Fiction Alley Park, this thread was found. It is called The Society for Canonically Responsible Shipping. What the hell does that mean? It means that in the thread, people discuss pairings that they believe has evidence (in canon) of possibly happening.

As much as it may seem like a good idea, speaking as a person who has been in the HP fandom for a while, this can only turn ugly! Especially as slash is also open for discussion. Thoughts? Questions? Any additions to this possible wank?

I don't follow FAP shipping threads, but this one started in May. I'm surprised at the control of the participants, actually.

I agree. I'm not seeing the wank on this one (but I'm not denying the possibility for wank in the future). Everyone seems to be depressingly solicitous of different opinions. I don't think there are even any flames on it.

It is depressing. Gah. What's happening to Potterwank? Outside of the usual CC wankage, it's been sooooo quiet lately. Even my shipdom has been unusually quiet. Of course, it could be all the horking Christmas and New Year's kiss challenge fics that are being smuffed out, but still...Too quiet. Makes me nervous.

Ha, that sounds like a real estate pitch.

"This wank is a fully functional homophobic starter, starting in our very popular HP wankerhood, with room to grow into a multi-fandom slash wank. Excellent for newlyweds and wankers looking to improve their wank-fostering skills. Now if you'll just follow me I have an interesting property in the Smallville fandom I think you'll want to see..."

"That Lex Luthor and Clark Kent clearly had sex here. HELLOOOO it's canon, is it not? He's bald, he's a bad, bad farmboy...hehe...uh...offtopic. Now, if you turn to your right, you can meet some of the producers here at Fandom_Wank estate, meet Mary, our anti-slash, yes, the one who's praying next to her brother...oh, and meet this girl who seems to think her character is a Marysue...agh, and this is one of our least treasured merchandise...a boy who stole icons. Now...to your left, walk fast, come on now..."

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you can make a case for the pairing within the context of the fic, I'll accept it, however OOC it may be. Furthermore, although there are certain things I don't personally care for in fics (rape, incest, child molestation, Farfarello), I wouldn't presume to tell others what they are and aren't allowed to write. I'll just, well, not read those fics.

I've seen those, and stupider, applied to Sailor Moon stuff. @.@

HOGWARTS ORGY!

From a fic of my own, which I'll probably never finish:
Then, as she looked down at one end of the table and then up across it to the other, it struck her. First years were eleven or twelve, right at the beginning of puberty. All the way up to seventh years at seventeen and eighteen years old, right at the end of puberty. Basically, you attended Hogwarts all through your "growing years."
'Dear lord,' she thought, eyes widening slightly. 'Every single student in this school either is going through puberty, is about to, or just finished it. The entire place is a giant container of hormones!'
"Er, Hermione?" Harry prodded lightly, a spoonful of oatmeal halfway to his mouth. "Something wrong?"
"No!" she blurted, then blushed a little and cleared her throat. "I mean, no, no, everything's fine. Just... had an epiphany."
"Did it hurt?" Ron asked, looking honestly concerned.

'Every single student in this school either is going through puberty, is about to, or just finished it. The entire place is a giant container of hormones!'

And that, dear Hermione, is why we lurve Hogwarts so very, very much.

It's just one big boiling stew of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Throw in the Room of Requirement and you have yourself unlimited potential.

Yeah, if anyone told me that the Room of Requirement has NEVER been used for a student tryst, I'd laugh in their face. They're teenagers at a boarding school, they're GOING to have sex; they'd have sex if it was a completely same-sex school, just because SOME teenagers, given the opportunity, will take any source of friction from another person.

What? How DARE you insinuate that the Hogwarts students aren't 'As Pure as the Driven Snow'!

Just because their teenagers, away from home, with raging hormones and a decent amount of both freedom and hiding spaces.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a major flame war over such a thread.

The fact is, the only ships that are truly canonical are the ones in the books e.g.: Arthur/Molly, Lily/James, Lucius/Narcissa and, for a bit Harry/Cho.

These people can argue canon for as long as they like. Personally, I see canon evidence for Harry/Sirius, Harry/Remus, Aberforth/Goat, Filch/Mrs Norris, Giant Squid/Dennis Creevey. They're not canon, but I can see the evidence.

And Filch is the REAL headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore's just a puppet, and Filch is really handsome but he just pretends to be ugly and mean so that no one suspects that he's really the most powerful wizard alive and it's really HIM Voldemort is scared of!

Actually, Aberforth/Goat is canon. And Filch/Mrs. Norris and Squid/Creevy are evidential, so they could be discussed there. They have canon behind them.

This thread has been around for AGES... and it has been incredibly well behaved. I have posted it in it a few times myself. I am not so much on the idea of only shipping ships which have a chance of happening in canon, but it is neat to discuss which ships really do have a chance in canon -- especially the ones people might not think of having a chance (like Draco/Hermione... it could happen!).

As for slash... the OP ([info]lightnote_blend) acknowledges Sirius/Remus, so the issue of 'OMG JKR w00D NEVAR RITE TEH EVAL SLASH' really didn't come up.

There's also the fact that I pop in every now and then to make sure everyone's playing nicely. I don't want mod-thwapping or real wank coming out of this one.

I founded it actually as someone who really likes to see canonesque ships (not stuff that couldn't happen without major plot twists that seem incredulous, such as Harry/Godric) involving known canon characters. Basically, I'm a sucker for a ship where the people have had some interaction and canon evidence, and I was certain that there were other, like-minded people.

On the issue of slash, I just made a post there last night to the effect that I rarely see slash pairings discussed there, and would like to see views on everybody's favorite canonesque slash ship.

We allow a wide view of canon, to the point that somebody could claim Harry/Draco (and in fact, someone claimed Lily/Giant Squid, based on one of her lines in OotP), as long as they stick to the canon characters as opposed to the fanon characters. We just like our ships served with a bit of canon.

But I'm just the founder, not the OP.

Hey, wasn't it the SF Gate or Slate that wrote an article about Harry being a great role model for gay kids? (Or something like that? I don't have the energy to look for the article.) The author of the article looked through all of the books and found enough parallels to a "coming out" experience to write a really good article about it. I can see the similarities.

So, why shouldn't people be able to see H/D in it?

(I can't see it, but I don't get love/hate relationships of any sort - That's just me, though.)

Re:

Harry/Draco is used as an example of a primarily fanon ship. I'm not saying that it isn't impossible, just that most of the H/D people ship it in fanon and really are more Swiss when it comes to canon.

But I'm in the same boat with the love/hate. I don't get it either.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]fuzzytowers

Well, yeah - That's the whole point. It's all fanon. It's fun. :o)

No matter what that corner of the fanon would like people to think Ron and Hermione are not canon. As much as I like to swagger around the Internet thinking it, neither are Harry and Ginny.

I can see where people get the interpretations that they do. I really can. What I can't see is not being able to see the interpretations of others as valid. (I don't have to read the fics, I just have to acknowledge that they might have a point - If they can back it up with canon.)

Last July, Rowling got all up in The Mirror's face denying to her last breath that Harry's queer. Or something. Look for lots more Het!Harry action in Book VI.
