Very small, but very amusing wank and a nice rant!
I was looking through Community_Promo on LJ and I found a "Support Arwen" community. Because I do happen to like Arwen, I went to take a look and was disappointed, but also very amused.

It starts at the OP in community_promo itself:

Why would I, or anybody, really, want to support a throw-away token love-interest character that Peter Jackson made halfway useful just to make the feminists shut up?"

In the community itself:

Someone doesn't understand the concept of LJ Tag.

Here, the owner of the community shows how she replied to the Arwen hater at community_promo".

Like I said, it's small, but I didn't join because it looks to me like one side is just as bad as the other.

In closing, Here is a fantastic rant about our favorite publiser, Publish America. She also talks about the Online Writing Community as a whole and how Amazon reviews are useless. Great rant!

"Speaking Elvish with such a thick American accent is just criminal, especially considering that she had dialect coaches - how does she still manage to butcher the language so terribly when she had dialect coaches?"

... Okay!

Personally, I didn't think it was half as bad as Daniel Radcliffe's Parseltongue in the "Harry Potter" movies. Why, you'd think he'd never heard the language before in his life!

Reminds me of Roger Ebert bitching in his FOTR review that the hobbits didn't look "hobbity enough." Peter Jackson should have totally taken the time to dig up a few real ones, you know.

I like Arwen and I like Liv Tyler playing Arwen. Shhh, don't tell anyone!

Right there with you on the Arwen thing. I think it's her best performance to date.

And her elvish sounded just fine to me, but then what do I know, I'm just a stupid muggle non-tinhat.

That's a big 10-WTF, good buddy. c.c;;
Of course, this probably boils down to basic arrogance, you know, comes back to that whole thing of "My interpretation of such-and-such is the ONLY right one!" This fool probably thinks they speak Elvish, and of course the way THEY speak Elvish is the ONLY correct one, and they can do both Lothlorien and Murkwood accents perfectly.

Okay, I loathe Arwen in the films with an elemental, fiery passion, but claiming that shutting up feminists had anything to do with the expansion of her character is fucking stupid. I'm a little more inclined to think that, ya know, Eowyn who kicks the shit out of people from here to next week but still manages to be beautiful is more than enough to keep the "feminists" happy.

Woot to that!

Arwen's grand theft horse and larger role had more to do with bulking up the love triangle sub sub sub plot so the girls who were just there to drool had a total of 3 girls available for het pairings as opposed to el mucho slashness.

Seriously! And they couldn't very well not have Aragorn angsting over some beautiful maiden at every lull in the battle. *eyeroll* If anything it's about movie conventions, not feminism, shit.

Hehe. See, I always thought it had more to do with giving relevance to a character who was actually going to be around at the end of the story instead of to one who appears, pops Frodo on his horse, and then disappears immediately, never to be seen again. But I think your anti-slash fanfic conspiracy theory is much more entertaining.

I saw it as: let's give the movie-but-no-book crowd some explanation/justification for Aragorn blowing off Eowyn. To the average moviegoer, if the story had just mentioned "Oh yeah, and Aragorn has a fiancee back home...somewhere," they wouldn't have gotten it, and Aragorn would come off as a jerk. They had to know who Arwen was and get at least a little sense of their relationship in order for his statement to make sense for somebody coming in cold. (Hell, if I were in their place I probably still wouldn't understand why he would turn down the righteously awesome Eowyn for the pretty li'l princess, even with the bulked-up pseudoromance.)

As for wiping out Glorfindel, I blame simplification: that's one less character people need to keep straight. Not saying that it's good, just that it makes sense in a certain light.

...but that's just me.

It really seems to me like the community should be renamed into "Support Liv Tyler As Arwen", because I've noticed that nearly everyone who dislikes Arwen dislikes her only because of Tyler's preformance. I, personally, think she's very pretty, but cannot act her way out of a paper bag, and would have been wonderful if the character was presented as in the book: hot elf chick in the background. Really, there's no reason to run a perfectly good character's name through the mud just because the actress sucked.

Someone obviously was traumatised by a blow-up doll of Liv Tyler at a crucial moment. Actually, I can sympathise.

And I'd just like to add that I have much, much, much love for Mrs Giggles.

You know, when the first movie came out, I was hanging out in a chat room which was also patroned by someone who could only be described as a "angry militant gay man". Movie!Arwen gave him fucking CONNIPTIONS. Kept screaming something about her taking attention away from one of the male elves, or something like that. He hate hate HATED her, and would go on at great length about how she was a horrid horrid bitch for daring to exist in the same movie as all the pretty pretty men.
Really, it was just the tip of the iceburg. I later came to find that this fellow was as virulent a heterophobe as any homophobe we've ever seen wanked here, if not moreso. He hated straight men (except the ones that were "just fooling themselves"), straight women, he hated lesbians only a little less, and in general was just very unpleasant if things weren't 100% hardcore sooper-YAOI-OMGOODNESSNESS!!! 24/7.

Oh lord...the scary thing is, I can think of three or four people I've come across on LOTR boards who that could have been.

Myself, I've always detested Arwen. Galadriel too, actually. Both for the same reason - they do nothing, but people are always blathering on about them. I don't mind Liv Tyler...she seems a nice woman and did as well as anyone could with the part.

But...liek OMG she stole Glorfindel's part!!!!11!

Or something. Whatever.

...

"More Glorfindel fanatics. And slashers. Hypocrites. Really. "Let's stay true to the book AND have Legolas and Aragorn be lovers!""

Right. This person, besides being a hypocrite, obviously has issues with fanfiction and suchlike (i.e. icky SLASH OMG!!11!). I don't exactly adore Arwen, but I also don't get my knickers in a twist over canon and non-canon, or wankers in general. Yes, fans can be annoying and demanding. Just get over it. One doesn't have to take fandom so bloody seriously (in fact, mustn't, for the sake of a healthy blood pressure).

The "Elf-slut" comments cracked me up though XD
