Cold Wank Mountain
Are we SURPRISED at wank coming out of the imdb boards anymore?

So, on the board for Cold Mountain (a civil war romance film which I must admit I only saw due to my killer crush on Mr. Jack White...pretty indie boys will be the death of me.) J'Ennui calls for a boycott of the flick. Why?

"Cold Mountain" is the latest in a too-long line of "runaway productions" (movies, TV series and commercials shot outside their country of origin -- specifically, the U.S.). The financiers and other above-the-line interests who are responsible for "Cold Mountain" chose to make this could-not-be-more-American-themed movie in ROMANIA (other than a few weeks of exteriors in the U.S.), merely because they were too selfish and short-sighted to re-consider the hypocritical greed they were expressing, undermining their artistic expression. By shooting in a very low-wage country, exploiting the local workforce, they displaced the myriad U.S. film craftspersons who could have and should have worked on this project. As a film industry worker, I will be amongst those boycotting this movie.

Far too many U.S.-located and -generated productions have left the U.S., bribed away by various governments' "incentives" (tax breaks, low wages, lax worker and environmental laws, etc.). Hollywood is far too rich to justify such taxpayer-supported subsidies, from any nation. Canada has been the main culprit in this scam ("Elf", "Honey", "Chicago" [Zellweger again!], "Paycheck", the "Scooby Doo" sequel, both "X-Men" movies, "Freddy Vs. Jason", "Titanic", "The Score", "Undercover Brother", "Along Came a Spider", "Shanghai Noon", "Texas Rangers", "Mission to Mars", "Josie & the Pussycats", "Snake Eyes", "Reindeer Games", "Get Carter", "Driven", "Affliction", "Antitrust", "Waking the Dead", "Mother Night", "Dick", "Detroit Rock City", "Lake Placid", "Snow Falling On Cedars", "Final Destination", etc. -- along with most TV movies, many TV series and commercials -- were partly or completely shot there). Meanwhile, Australia, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Romania and others are catching up.

Please join me in boycotting "Cold Mountain" and exposing it for the sham it really is.

Pass this message along to everyone you know.

Sincerely,

John

This idea goes over QUITE well, as you might imagine.

You are an idiot indeed. Worrying about such trivial matters when you could be spending your time ranting about other IMPORTANT issues such as poverty, famine, malnutrition. You remind me of some bitter laid off worker who blames his misfortune on immigrants ie Latinos, Asians and African Americans.
The US film industry is so incredibly huge, it wont hurt to let a few projects leave to cheaper territories. It costs a fortune to shoot in the US, whereas labor in Canada is cheaper yet skilled and capable. Deal with it and take your whiny ass somewhere else.

Whine! Whine! Whine! This is just the latest "cryathon" from pro-union activists becasue they have effectively priced themselves out of the industry. Like most Americans I'm sick and tired of Labor Union manipulation under the cover of patriotism when in fact all it is is Socialist agitation. If you ever wonder why this country loses jobs to foreign countries in any industry, look no further than the dinosours that run the AFL/CIO. May Wal-Mart be the only place you're ever allowed to shop, or do you boycott them as well? When such relics become extict this will be a much better country to do business in, even shoot an American oriented Hollywood production. Best yet boycott anything with a union label on it.

All this and more, courtesy of the imdb boards! What would we do without them?

Well, hell. I'm boycotting media currently made in America. The OC, Survivor, anything pop, Fox News, President Bush....need I go on? If you want to get technical, I'm even boycotting Jack White. Only by not buying the mass-produced crap they churn out for our 'enjoyment' will we ever get some halfway decent music or television. So, in a way, I agree, even if my reasons for boycotting this bitter little nut of a movie and their reasons for boycotting it are totally different.
I think the last CD I ever bought from any American company was a Josh Groban CD. And that should tell you something.

I'm sorry, but tarring an entire country as "crap," without question or exception (oh, except Josh Groban, 'cause he's dreamy deep!), is IMO immensely wanky. It brings me much amusement. Thank you.

Despite my recent disagreements with Virago, gotta agree on her here, your statements are tres wankeh. It comes off as the yappings of one of those people that run around going "OMG American stuff is teh suxx0r only stuf from other countries is l33t LOL Americas stuff sux!!1"

Yep. I'm boycotting Nicole Kidman's work too. That woman hardly seems to do anything but act wooden, mack on her co-workers, show up to cermonies to get fawned over and whine about Tom Cruise.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaactually, it's because there's little area in the US that the government will let people shoot movies on that looks like that. I'm betting the location scouts had to do a lot of convincing to get everyone to pack up and fly to fucking Transylvania.

I hate to break up the blaming of Canada, but they filmed Titanic in Mexico...

Um, You have to leave the US to find certain locations. What with the US being a lot more developed than it was 130 years ago.

Plus, Romania had a ton of skinny underfed guys who made perfect extras. Versus trying to find civil war soldiers here. Damn our good nutrition and dental care.

I myself am not really BOYCOTTING the movie... but I'm not going to see it. But that has more to do with being sick of movies that reduce the entire complexity and broad, varied participants of the Civil War down to "stupid, angry hicks in rags snarling and fighting the noble, handsome Northern army who are all there to battle for the freedom of a people".
As to the whole filming in other countries, whoopty-doo, Basil, that's just how it's done. I've never heard anyone bitch that Hercules and Xena weren't filmed in Rome and Greece.

Canada has been the main culprit in this scam

Yes, it must be that. Because it couldn't be that there are cheaper production costs in Canada, more wilderness and undeveloped land for historic pieces and generally cooperative people willing to help because they feel like it.

It's a Canadian conspiracy! We're bringing down the US by stealing your film productions!

Ironic part? I had this same fight two days ago with a girl who insisted that Americans filming in Canada was going to "destroy the Canadian film industry and flood the airwaves with cheaper American content" which has already happened, thanks CBC/CTV

Wankiest thing about J'Ennui is that, despite claiming to work in the film industry, he shows absolutely no interest in any other movie, whether it's filmed in the States or not. He's picked on Cold Mountain for his crusade and he will not let. it. drop.
