Poppy Z. Brite versus her fans
I thought long and hard about posting this wank as it's my first time. Nevertheless, this one's going to explode pretty soon, if not by the time I've finished writing this.

Poppy Z. Brite is a former horror writer, who's a lot like Anne Rice in that the more you know about her, the less you want to read her books.

And then... Miss Brite finds a community sort of named after her which mixes childfree-ers and yaoi/slash lovers, two of the most explosive materials known to fandom. So she makes a post to it questioning the adoption of a childfree identity. Our lovely mod Kwobtchan tells her she's off-topic while all Miss Brite can do it whine about how this proves she's not one of the "Cool Kids". I recall there being a F_W law about that...

I bet you've never heard of this community before, right? Nor had most people, so this wank would have died, if only Miss Brite hadn't (within minutes of posting and receiving replies, no less!) written about it in her journal. The "Cool Kids" analogy is mentioned yet again.

Have fun! :)

The commuinty isn't even about her really. Man. Don't want to read her books.

Oh this is from the commuinty info on that site:
So why on EARTH did we call this community PZB bangers?

Easy. It's a play on "bible bangers". You know the people who think you should have kids and stop playing with naked boys who like other boys. If they can "bang their bibles" at us, why can't we return fire with a little good old-fashioned Poppy Z. Brite vampire smut? Mind you, we could have used "Manga Bangers" instead, but the PZB books are, by their nature, heavier than your average manga. They'd do more damage.

Well I know that several manga series out there that have run for like 40+ volumes, if you put 'em all in a big sack I think you could do some real damage.

Poppy Z. Brite once wrote a book that featured a gorgeous male vampire that shook his groove thing on with a son he fathered and abandoned years ago. It was one of the most melodramatic, overwrought and histronic things I've ever read in my entire life.

So, no. Really, just no.

I've read the post in question. I don't find it too wanky. She's just asking a simple question, besides, there are NO community rules dedicating what are off-topics and what are not. Maybe not a totally appropriate question given the mission statement, but not wanky.

Her own personal journal entry, however, IS wanky.

Thanks to the rest of y'all for reminding me that most of my readers are not dim-witted babybats, and for the articulate and interesting opinions on childlessness vs. childfreedom.

So anyone who don't agree with her highness are "dim-witted babybats?" Blah.

Never read her book before, don't care, but a friend of mine loves her work, so I may check it out.

Poppy Z. Brite is Anne Rice minus the one redeeming work. I know everyone says it, but I swear to God, it really is the most retarded drivel you've ever read. I randomly started reading one of her books once, got about five pages before encountering gay biker vampires mouthfeeding each other chocolate brownies, put the book down, burned my eyes, and walked away.

Coincidentally, I didn't think Brite's question was snarky, but the other stuff she put at the end of the post was kinda snotty. O_o And made no sense. It was like someone else said - the whole thing was like a hallucinagenic ad lib.

Imho, Poppy Z Brite turned wanky the moment she proclaimed that she would never write something like "Lost Souls" or "Drawing Blood" again. I don't remember the whole deal of what all went down, but I think it went along the lines of her pretty much giving the people who had a) bought her early books and b) supported her a kick in the face by stating that she was not going to touch the topics in these books again with a ten foot pole.

I can understand that she wants/wanted to move on ( I for one don't see a difference between her earlier books and the later works. ) to other things, but that doesn't mean she had to slam what she did before. Maybe it's just me, but I find that behaviour somewhat odd.

I think she might have gotten a better response if she hadn't said, "I'm not here to blab about myself overmuch," followed by a bunch of her semi-tangential personal opinions. She should have shut up after asking her question and saying, "I'm truly interested." Still, banning her is overreacting just a tad.

Ahh...Poppy Z Brite. When I was still a fan of Anne Rice (what? stop laughing. I wasn't paying attention, okay?) people kept telling me to read 'Lost Souls'.

I tried, I really did, but it was quite possibly one of the most godawful pieces of junk I've ever tried to read. And bear in mind...I was reading Anne Rice at the time.

Actually, I adore both 'Lost Souls' and 'Drawing Blood'. In 'Lost Souls', the characters to watch and follow are not Zillah and the other vamps (to me at least) but Ghost and Steve, who are beautifully drawn, gorgeous, complex characters. Their relationship is a slasher's DREAM - rich and complicated and deeply fucked up and full of unrequited longing. Mmmm. Ghost/Steve. I adore them, I worship them. I write fanfic for them, but don't tell Ms. Thang that, thanks much.

And 'Drawing Blood' is just a lovely book as well. I loved the concept of Birdland, and the improbable yet gorgeous romanticism of Trevor/Zach. And props to her for writing a hax0r back in the days of 14.4B external modems and BBSes.

Then she got some airs. She'd started to write a book where Ghost and Steve (her first characters) actually work through their shit and (maybe) get together. Then she had some 'epiphany' that Ghost and Steve were 'immature' and that she'd 'grown' as a writer since creating them. WhatEVER. So she abandoned them, never to finish their story or bring them to any emotional conclusion. She went on to write a whole bunch of drek, which was never as popular as LS or DB, and then wondered why? Well, hon, maybe because it sucks. Just a thought.

Missing Mile 4EVAH! *waves little G/S flag*

Considering that PZB was only the second person other than the mod to post, I'd say it's hard to tell what is on-topic.

LJ's giving me 'error: no such entry' when I click on those two links, unfortunately. And although it's certainly still wanky, PZB does redeem herself by saying of the community members:
"They seem like nice young people, though, except for one nascent wit who posted a snarky comment about "insipid boy-love novels in which all the characters are annoyingly normal." Yes, and I suppose you're So Very Different and Misunderstood, dear."
She then does go and re-wank herself (come again?) with the next sentence, which dismisses the "kiddies" who bought her earlier books, but what can we really expect?

Question
Hello! Just found this odd little place. Here's something I've long wanted to ask about on the childfree community, but I didn't want to join the community and certainly didn't want to be thought of as a troll. I'm hoping maybe I can get away with it here, since I've (sort of) lent my initials to this community.

Why childfree? I mean, why do you identify as childfree? I am childless and planning to stay that way, but I don't hate kids and I confess I don't understand the urge to define oneself as "childfree," have Internet communities about it, etc. I did experience a certain bitterness toward "breeders" in my early thirties, when it seemed to me that the entire world was geared toward celebration of heterosexual people and their babies, but even then it wasn't a bonding factor for me. Is it one for you, and if so, why? I don't intend this as a criticism per se; I'm truly interested.

I'm not here to blab about myself overmuch, but I would like to respond to a rather snarky comment below by saying that if you think the characters in THE VALUE OF X are normal, I can't help thinking you have a great deal to learn about normalcy. True, they don't have funny-colored hair or body piercings, they don't wear makeup, they don't Worship The Night. I think part of growing up, though, is realizing that a great many people who exhibit these characteristics are in fact excruciatingly normal -- or at least as "normal" as anyone is -- while a lot of people who don't feel the need to parade their differences are in fact unusual and interesting folks. Not that there's anything wrong with parading one's differences, but I don't care for communities where it is a requirement.

Um, I'm not even in this community, and I don't see how a post from someone that you even sort-of-named the community after could possibly be off topic, along with it being an inquiry about being child-free or identifying one as such - this is as on topic as things can possibly be, in my opinion.

...really, just a thought.

Also, for a mod who is trying to celebrate yaoi and things that are generally not socially regarded as "cool" or "hip" you have a strange way of showing acceptance, which is something that you would think you'd kind of 'celebrate.'
