Wanktionary? Answer is: No.
Edit: There is no post here. It is all in your mind. Please move along -waves- byebye

I've been asked to post about this after the topic came up in multiple threads. If this needs to be moved or deleted just give me the word.

We keep seeing the questions about what an abrreviaton stands for or what a sockpuppet is, plain ole journal FAQ stuff, and newbies wondering about the history of in jokes. I have the time and have offered to make a site and/or journal for the answers to these questions and the space has been offered by Zee but there are differing opinions. So I'm bringing it to you.

If I do this site I'll have a my journal used for posting questions, answers to those questions, definitions, histories ect. (if not a new community on the side to keep things cleared up) I would like to have a list of all the wank related communities and I'd eventually try to index parts of Jurisimprudence. Also if certain things should be left out, the protest will be there too. Don't want people understanding dead from coke? Then we won't post it. Point is the content would be set by the wank communities for the wank communites. And even before that I'm asking you if we want/need this site.

Actually we were discussing it here: http://www.journalfen.net/community/otf_wank/47688.html?nc=21
and on another tread in a different community earlier the same day. (blasted memory)

If you read the link (and yeah I'm new to journals so icky plain link) you'll see the idea isn't original at all. Also, before the word biter enters into this, I don't read LJs due to my lack of a code. I'm lost without a handy friend list. (Which I checked only to see someone else has a journal for it that they did on LJ so...yeah.)

Also I would have got to this sooner but fan-fic is all enveloping.

I think this a good idea, I know we must have a ton of poor newbies who are confused as hell about what we're talking about.

Plus it'd be handy for those of us *coughmyselfcough* who have memories like sieves and could use a refresher.

I say go for it.

I'm all for equal edumication, but I don't think we really need a lexicon. If you're supposed to be here, you pick things up pretty quick, and I'm reluctant to make it so any fuckstick could bound in and post a non-wank or something.

Yeah, I'm new, so I know that if you want to be here you can learn everything you need to fairly swiftly.

It's kind of like that club you always wanted to get into as a kid, with the bouncers who'd let you in if you acted like you were supposed to be there, and if you didn't know how to act kicked your ass out in the street but never gave you any tips. You had to learn as ya went, and came out the better for it.

I dunno. I prefer people finding these things for themselves. It's more fun to find out the meaning of phrases/laws etc for yourself and Darwin's law then applies as to who ends up knowing this top!sekrit information and say posting on these sites i.e. it's harder for the idiots certain people to follow us...

Like I said before, and agreeing with anon. here, I really don't like the idea of this.

If we'd wanted/needed it, we'd have done if before. As it is, we don't and we haven't.

Jokes aren't funny if you have to explain them more than seven times.

That's where the "Also if certain things should be left out, the protest will be there too. Don't want people understanding dead from coke? Then we won't post it." part comes in.

So we have a glossery of safe terms instead. And the thing about explaining a joke seven times; if you explain it once in one place you don't have to re tell it 20 times.

As I was saying to a friend, these are the type of things that really aren't funny or cute if you have a nice little definition going "The amusing phrase 'Beading the dead pony' came about from a hilarious type made on the 27th July 2002. it has been the cause for many an icon or gleeful joke."

If there's no point for one, then there's really no point for any of them.

Now, I'm going to be a big wanker here and step up and say that I am the Elder Spokeswoman one of the oldest olbies we've got around here. I've been with FW since it's started, through all it's various incarnations and become friends with a lot of people along the way. I've been a Wanka for almost one and a half years. I'm one of the mods, I sort out this kind of stuff. Believe me, I've been considering having an FAQ for quite a while now - but every time I've come up with the descision not to do it.

Why? Because FW is the inside jokes. It's the silly little things, it's the Squidwarts and the Elder Spokeswoman of the Fandom dangnabbit so listen to me and the Ok! We (the hivemind) don't want an FAQ detailing this. Any of it.

We have no qualms about explaining a joke over and over again, goodness knows some wanks need more comments on them - and you nearly always get some fresh insight or enjoyment out of the telling. Now you may have been lurking for a bit longer, but you seem to have joined Journalfen less than a week ago. Good for you that you have lots of bright ideas and want to help, but I don't think an FAQ is necessary at this juncture.

But it would be REALLY funny to say to people "READ THE FAQ!" (Or perhaps that would only be funny to dl_anoners...)

Of course, it would be far more hilarious if the definitions were wrong or if there WERE no FAQ. How deliciously wanky.

Also chiming in with agreement. I don't we really need a dictionary or whatever in the first place because members are usually very quick to answer newbie questions and it's easy enough to figure out the context of most injokes, if not the origin. A post or community specifically for people to ask questions in might be a good idea though, for the skitish people who think someone will bite their heads off if they ask where "what the shit is this" came from.

I dunno dude, I mean half (or more than half) the fun of f_w is the inside jokes, and if they're explained they're not really inside jokes anymore. I always though of f_w as one of those communities where you had to be there for the jokes, and if you werent then you either read to catch up, or you more on to the newest thread and make your own jokes. I don't really like the idea of a joke dictionary.

I understand the POV of the folks who are saying "It's not funny if you have to explain it ___ times" or "that's why they're in-jokes." I think the suggestion that [essentially] it might make trolling easier has a point too.

But the librarian in me is a sucker for the organization of facts & history. Also, for laziness -- trust me, there's a reason (many) library-type people are anal: because organization means you have to do less work, overall. It's not like these questions *don't* get asked and answered -- they just get asked one at a time, over and over again, by newbies on various threads, sometimes very politely. One place to send them, one URL, instead of typing out an explanation over and over, sometimes one that isn't even agreed upon, could be handy.

The thing that makes me say thumbs up, for whatever my opinion's worth, is that people come and go; the in-jokes (and wank history) stay. Sometimes when asked what a particular phrase means (the beaded dead pony, for instance) there isn't even agreement on exactly what or who started it, unless the original coiner of the term or somebody involved in the original discussion happens to be reading the subthread in which the newbie asks. I have a thing about meanings getting lost with time, which ties into my thing about the LJ and Blurty version of FW, and all the conversation that occurred there, being gone forever too. (And ok, also to the neurosis caused by recently losing my last three years worth of fannish e-mails due to my own stupidity.)

I think some kind of inside post friends-locked, etc on request would be okay. Hell, people. I wrote an Enthnography paper on us, and it would have helped if there was a person I could have requested it from (which was so much fun...*dies*). I still cannot find that damn adolfa/coke reference, even though I know what it means. I just want the freaking bookmarks. ;)

You did an ethno here?! *is enthralled* Since my field methods course, I've been toying with looking at various on-line communities, but was unsure of precedent.

What did you use as data? JUST F_W, or sites pointed to as well? And... er... what's your field of study (I'm a socially awkward sociologist, as is obvious).

Or, you know, I could just mind my own beeswax:-)

I started in a wider circle of wank, namely lj flamewars and ljdrama.org as well, then narrowed it down to just f_w. I had to do an extensive search of the archive as well as drawing sources from my own findings. Everything was either public or posted as public at one time. I was going to interview people for my final paper, which is due in a few weeks, but there's a reeeeally strict policy on human subjects research at the Anthro Dept. at my college, and I opted to draw only from public sources and not do all that paperwork. Self-preservation and all. ;)

I'm Folklore & Mythology, actually (I think that gave me away to a few people) but Ethnography is critical component of half of the final projects/theses there that we have a required course and a semester project. I want to be Clifford Geertz when he writes about cockfighting in "Interpretations." Le sigh.
