Curtain up, cue wank!
Let it never be said that Broadway fen cannot wank with the best of them when the time comes. A sterling example for the wanky enjoyment and mocking of all.

A little back story for proper enjoyment. Over on the Broadway community on LJ, there is one wank that Will. Not. Die. over whether the terms cast recording and soundtrack are interchangeable (no, they really aren't to my mind, but that's neither here nor there). After at least half a dozen spoogefests about the topic, it seems to have died out momentarily. Oh but just when you thought that was so, cast_recordings pops up. Now, with a name like cast_recordings, you'd think the position on the matter was fairly well sewn up right? Oh so wrong. genericpoptart posts to the community asking which term people think should be used (flamebait of the highest order if you ask me, but I can't say for sure). The expected wanking ensues in quite splurty glory, despite the fact that, as of yet, the OP hasn't replied, including sprnplr bringing out the dictionary definition of soundtrack and pinklacedcorset claiming laziness as her excuse, then being smacked down appropriately. The best of all this though is the anon who is the real wanker here, particiuarly since they aren't signing a name/e-mail address or just getting an LJ account since you don't need codes anymore. Ahhh wank, how I love thee.

It's small yet, but these things tend to turn into a many headed hydra of wank in short order.

Why not just call the community "Broadway Music," and avoid the argument altogether? Oh wait, that would be sensible.

In other news, sprnplr (however you're supposed to pronounce that) died this morning from internal organ damage caused by the stick up her ass. More news at 10.

I don't know, I'm stuck because honestly, soundtrack isn't the right word and people claiming it is are just... well... wrong, but the wank about it is beyond unnecessary.

And sprnplr is a guy. ;-)

I agree that soundtrack is the wrong word, but to take it all so seriously is just...well, wanky. Sprnplr is so passionate about it, you'd think the community had just insulted his first born. Also, my apologies to sprnplr's gender identification. ;)

yeah, but that would make Abba and Billy Joel qualify as "Broadway music" because of Mamma Mia and Movin' Out.

What a quandary! ;-)

It always seemed pretty logical to me. Cast singing on it = cast recording. Bands playing on it, or orchestral accompaniment = soundtrack. Then again, logic has no place in wank.

Using my Joey Fatone-in-RENT icon because hey, that was wanky goodness too!

Pshaw, it's wank, logic is never involved.

Pouncing on people for calling it a soundtrack was wanky, as it isn't really something worth getting all freaked out about (the recent "the end" wank comes to mind), but to just blatantly refuse to admit you're wrong when the question is specifically asked is amazingly dense.

Seriously, is calling it what it's called on the actual CD so damn hard? If you want to call it a soundtrack because you're lazy and/or don't really care then fine, I don't think it's necessary for people to get all on your ass about it, but admit you're fucking wrong already.

*steps up*

I'm the 'pinklacedcorset' one... yes, I call it a soundtrack because I'm lazy. But I also admit that yes, it DOES say Cast Recording on all my CDs, and yes, they ARE cast recordings.

So this would be my big admittance that "I AM FUCKING WRONG ALREADY"

XD

By the way, you people are hillarious... I'm slowly working my way through all the comments here, and, yeah. The RENT wank parodies amused me. O_o

Have a day!

Speaking As A Broadway Fan...
[info]lavenderfrost

*BOGGLES at these people*

WHY the FUCK does it matter?

Seriously.

Calling a cast recording a soundtrack isn't going to change the contents of the cd/tape.

Just because I call my cast recordings of West Side Story or Gypsy "soundtracks" from time to time doesn't automatically change them to badly-arranged James Horner tunes with a crappy heartfelt Celine Dion ballad at the end.

I think the terms "soundtrack" and "cast recording" can be interchangeable for one main reason - they both feature music from a show. I understand why some people can get picky about it, but I honestly don't care. I'm too busy listening to them to obsess over it.

Well, yes and no. They can be interchangeable to an extent, and I don't think it's that important which you use, but the people who are screaming from the mountain tops that soundtrack is absolutely RIGHT are... well.. wrong. I don't particularly care either, but there is a difference when you get right down to it.

Oh my god, this is still going . . . I remember witnessing this debate simultaneously on a Phantom of the Opera mailing list and a Miss Saigon mailing list, like . . . nine years ago. o.O I think it had a few go-arounds on the infamous RENT Sonic list. *twitch*

Soundtrack, cast recording . . . I tend to stick with the latter term, because I'm anal, but sometimes I'm just fucking lazy and don't feel like correcting myself. And I assure you, I have enough internalized wankitude over my term usage without other people jumping on me about it. :)
