Fanfic 10 Commandments
Hello. Newbie here. I'm not entirely sure if this is worthy of posting, but it seemed a little wanky to me. I'm sure you folks will mock me mercilessly let me know if it's not up to snuff.

The post which spawned the comments.

I also found this little gem, in which Tiranog suggests that because you pay money to connect to the Internet, fanfic is not free. This is countered by Spare_Change, who says, "The point is that fanficcers receive no payment for their work, and hence do not "owe" their readers a return on a non-existent investment."

Oho, but that post is exceptionally wonderful.

I do so love the nutty aroma of literate wank.

Ranting at people for writing in a grammatically fucked up fashion or in a way that makes canon wish it had more lube is one thing, god knows I've done it and will continue to do it until I stop seeing fic with 19th C. European boys snogging in broad daylight in front of Notre Dame. But for fuck's sake, you don't get to care what other people are writing when it's a matter of personal choice, suck it the hell up.

The most annoying thing about that wank was Tiranog writing 'Cheers' at the bottom of every single comment.

"Blah blah blah writers owing their fans, blah blah blah, you're wrong and trying to shut me up, blah...

Cheers."

It's the little things that get me.

What I found amusing was when spare_change started signing her comments cheers. It had the air of a good, subtle mocking.

I love those.

Spare_change is just another "You said something meeeaeaaan to meeeeeeeeee!" fangoil.

Feh.

If you put your stories on the 'net, people are going to comment, and they're not always going to sing your praises to the sky.

How dare someone judge my fic? And then...*gasp!* post that judgement online!!!

She also doesn't seem to get that reviews and constructive criticism are two different things. Reviews are for the potential readers. Constructive criticism is for the writer. As a reader, I thank the almighty whatever from high atop the thing for reviews; it's far easier to sift through the whole crapload of fanfiction out there because of them.

Huh. I thought the original post was incredibly funny. Tongue-in-cheek wankery is Dex's specialty.

I thought that the original post was damn good, myself. It made sense. I've had to deal with beta-ing for a friend of a friend who's in LUUUUURVE with Draco because he's blond and therefore he's just a misunderstood gorgeous boy, you know. (Unlike Dudley who's just a fat unattractive bully who happens to act the exact same way Draco does, down to collecting goons.) And I'm forced to beta for this melodramatic twit without tearing her throat out, because she'll go whining to our mutual friend, whom I love too much to subject to that. If I could only make her GET these commandments... *sigh*

Wow, that commandment guy is quite possibly the most annoying person I've encountered today. That's pretty impressive considering I was surrounded by screaming children (who all apparently exist solely to make my job harder) just an hour ago.

Sorry, I was an idiot, so I deleted my last comment.

I hated the 'OMG criticism is meeeeeaaaaaaan' comment so much that I went ahead and wanked. *sigh* Forgive me.

Is this wanky because of the Stories-I-like-are-good, Ideas-I'm-not-interested-in-are-bad slant of the original post or because of bickering that arises from it?

Or both?

Well, I dont know, I don't find bickering, just people with different opinions and arguing while trying not to get emotional. But just enjoy the show.

I saw Dex's commandments a couple of weeks ago, but this one:

Thou shalt not act and react to the various canon creators and personalities like a weird lisping dickhead

still cracks me up.

The "I'm giving you people the straight shit for your own good, and if you don't like it you're probably all whining hacks" message made me crack, I admit it.

Is it wanky that I kinda wish slash was still subversive? Ah, the good old days five years ago.

Man, I'm totally having a Mo moment. A Mo-ment?

But seriously, if you think about it-- after spending so many decades as the red-headed stepchild of "legitimate fanfic" (hee! oxymoron!), slash certainly has become rather mainstream in quite a short period of time. It almost boggles.

We're taking a Mo-ment... and we're done.

Wank begats wank, which begats Fandom wank, which begets terminated wank.

You can practically see the progress from life to death here, can't you?

Wait, no, misremembering the wank. I was thinking of another one that came to Fandom Wank, where some person had typed up a screed about how time is money, so time spent reading fanfic is money wasted, therefore fanfic authors have a moral obligation to write well and not waste money. But an anon commented that it was a stupid idea, enraging the poster, making the poster find the anon's real identity, and having them kick the anon out of their friend's page.

Then the poster posts up the wank on Fandom Wank, but people on FW point out that the poster is ovverreacting like crazy, justifying the anon's need to be, well, anon before disagreeing with her.

...

Does anyone out there have any idea of what I'm talking about? Even I'm not too sure now...

No, that was the wank. And it was on FW on or around 10/30/03. But it's gone. Zannechaos, one of our own, went on said rant. Then someone replied anon, was tagged by their IP. They claimed it was their sister (or something - hazy here) [info]eyebrowofdoom and [info]eljuno *I think* pointed out that they'd jumped all over the anon when really the anon made valid points - and were asked: did you not understand the blah blah blah.

But where is the wank?!
