i have never before seen so many people in one place appear to believe they have independently invented the 'how could you be so lame as to critique a story?' argument.

you've got the whole gamut from sarcastic 'now that you have snarked, the world is a better place!' to 'the author is sick and deserves extra niceness!' to 'why should you care if it's bad? get a life!' to 'you shouldn't be mean to her because i can't write either, and i don't want people to be mean to me.'

Clearly there needs to be a special fic board for people who are dyslexic/dying/under 15/missing a leg due to a freak accident involving butane and rogue armadillos. There can be a chat room for all their fictitious big sisters to get together and wax pissy about how mean all those horrible people are who expect posted fic to adhere to at least some standards, and no feedback that does not include at least three *hugs!* will be allowed.

If only we'd had Fandom_Wank back in the halcyon days of Rotoli. We could have wanked MOM every damn time she posted. Remember how she was the only one who really understood Louis? One of my fandoms was cursed with a person like this--she would join groups, then if the conversation didn't go her way, start flaming the mods and make it all about her. She would get banned, join under another account and try to make trouble some more. One of the members who was good at IP traces finally checked all new members, and if they came from her location, just tossed them before they could say anything.

She would also have endless stories of all the illnesses she had, she was going to kill herself, she flamed us because she was depressed, yadda yadda yadds. Then would everyone would come back on her and tell her in no uncertain terms that was not an excuse for being rude and obnoxious, she would come back with, "oh, my sister/daughter/brother-in-law lives here too and they were using my computer." We figured there must have been about 15 people living in her house. . . Every fandom has at least one of these, seems like. The creepy thing about this one was she was about 50 years old, not a teenie fangirl.

	Dude, I hadn't thought of that but you are so right - the "Invent a dying internet persona" thing is totally a variant of Munchausen's By Proxy. I think there's a Journal of Abnormal paper in there somewhere. Well, as long as it keeps them from sending their kids into insulin shock so they can rush them to the hospital, it's all good with me.
