Old flamewars never die, they just retreat to their corners and BURN
Once upon a time, there was the X-Files fandom, and oh, the flamewars burned.

But time passed, and people left, and then one day the show was cancelled. This should be the end of the fairy tale, right?

WRONG.

XF fandom is still out there, with all the crazies off in their own little corners, patting each other on the back and nursing their hurts. There aren't as many flamewars anymore, if only because the wackier fen keep to within their own circles and therefore don't have anyone to dispute their wild-ass opinions.

But that doesn't make those opinions any less wanky! ;-)

So while TXF has been off the air for, what, a year and a half now, and Duchovny (hereafter known as DD) left the show a year plus before that, there are still DDFans who are as bitter and virulent as they were the day he announced he was leaving. And there are also the faithful and clueless of the Haven Spoilers folder, who continue to cling to the idea of a second movie like a lifeboat in the North Atlantic.

We begin our adventure in the Spoilers folder, where a group of insane diehard Fans have decided to put an ad in the Hollywood Reporter to encourage 1013 to make a second XF movie.

(What? What's that you say? A lame ass $3000 ad from a teeny tiny subset of "The Fans" isn't going to do much to entice a studio to spend millions of dollars for a big-budget movie? Listen, mister, you just put that icky logic back in your pocket and march yourself right on out of here. We'll have no common sense here - we have ENTHUSIASM and DEEP ABIDING LOVE FOR THE OTP, and that's all that matters, dagnabbit!)

Soon after, someone from the DDFans board decides to let her pals know over there what's going on, and discuss what The Only True DD Fans like themselves can do to help. And then it gets wacky!

Of course, there's the usual 'I won't go to any movie if Doggshit is in it' stupidity, but things become more Rage Amongst Each Other when there's confusion as to whether the people collecting for the ad will take "classic fan money".

Which leads to an important question: how does one recognize "classic fan money" versus regular money? Does it have Mulder's face in place of Ben Franklin's? *g*

(Side note: I find it HILARIOUS that the DDFans are so suspicious and wary of the Haven Spoilers board; I think they're still punishing the Haven for allowing that subfolder for "The Next Generation" to exist during S8. Despite the fact that the folder was a veritable trollfest of anti-Doggett folks screaming and yelling how much they hated the guy, and the whole folder finally disappeared when the board owner -- a hardcore shipper herself -- decided she'd had enough of the insane and never-ending flamewars. All of which happened THREE YEARS AGO, and still, the DDFans consider the Haven unsafe and pro-Doggett.

The HAVEN, people. BWAHAHAHAHA!)

But wait! There's more!

Once the Haven's rep has been cleared, a discussion begins about...oh God, this killed me...whether or not Gillian Anderson is really the best choice to play Scully in future movies!!!!!!!

I'm serious. They're not sure if she could do justice to the role.

Some choice quotes:

Xenodeno: Heh, I think it would be fun to see if TL or Julianne Moore was cast as Scully.
As an afterthought...really, as much of a non-fan of GA as I am, I still liked her in the role of Scully and would like to see her one more time as Scully. After that she can fade away into obscurity.

Beargirl74: I think I would prefer Tea as Scully myself, especially since she had a bit of experience with the role in "Hollywood AD," but that's just me. Then again, since Julianne filled in so well for Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in Hannibal, and she obviously has experience playing a red-headed Fed, she would probably do well in the part also. Who knows?

I'd hate to say it, but I feel that the role of Scully is really GA's major claim to fame. She's making obvious attempts to branch out, and while this is understandable, I'm getting the very distinct impression that she seems to have a rather elevated opinion of herself and her abilities. She's certainly not the first actor, or actress, to grapple with this type of frustration, but she has to be the first I know of who seems to try to elevate her own status to, well, that of an immortal, which I find worrisome for personal religion-related reasons.

*dies laughing*

Really, you have to read the thread. I mean, I know the truly fanatical DDFans are obsessed and very, very singularly focused, but, c'mon! They've got to be joking, right? Right?

*crickets chirp*

Anyway, there's still a little bit more of the Movie Campaign story. Sadly, after three weeks of collecting, they've only gotten $505 in donations. Which yeah does seem like a lot, but I know the DD and GA ads (which ran along with many others in the special XF-edition Hollywood Reporter issue when the show ended) collected about ten times as much as this movie campaign has, and they did that -- EACH -- in about a week. So in comparison, this collection plate will be out for a long, long time, methinks.

I'm thinking maybe it's not going so well because the the second movie campaign website is so lame. ;-) Not that they'd be open to suggestions for improvement; I can see in the Haven thread [info]deslea went the high road and offered some sage advice about how to create an ad, and what the real costs will be. Advice which was promptly ignored, because, don't forget, they have ENTHUSIASM and DEEP ABIDING LOVE FOR THE OTP, and that's all that matters!

In conclusion...these people are all whacked. I can't decide if their continued passion still flaming this hot two years after the show ended is something to admire or fear.

I say...fear. *g*

That would be the lovely nickname bestowed on Agent John Doggett by the "Classic Fans".

To say they did not want a replacement for Mulder would be an understatement.

Doggett was the character who ended up as Scully's partner some time after DD's departure. It's a shame the writers didn't do better with his character and the storylines in S8, because the actor (Robert Patrick of T2 fame) is quite good. Hehe, last time I checked, the NG fen who hated him called him Dogbert. My, the distaste has grown!

Should I laugh, or cry? Or both? *g*

This whole thing has been somewhere between humorous and just very, very sad. It was sad earlier, when it was just on Haven - Karcane has no idea what she's doing, and is pretty much saying "screw you" to any attempts for advice (which Deslea has been incredibly kind, IMHO, in offering, as it is very clear they're running a M/S OTP!1!!! campaign that discludes any other faction). Which isn't something you should do when there's over three-thousand dollars involved. Period. (I can't imagine they'll ever reach their goal...I hope not, anyway, because if enough people throw money at her to make it to 3000 dollars, it will be a sad, sad day for XF fandom in general.)

This, however, takes the cake. Honestly. Three years after the fact and the DD fans are *still* bitching about Teh Eval that is anyone other than DD ever involved in XF. I do love the GA bashing, saying that Scully was her "only" memorable role, considering DD is in the exact same boat. Scary, scary fucking fans.

But the profession of Haven to be "a next gen board" is going to keep me in giggles for months. Seriously.

Linzee, still remembers getting flamed out of Haven for dare suggesting Robert Patrick was not the anti-Christ, and single-handedly responsible for bad ratings, crop spoilage in Idaho, and global inflation. Good times, those were.

My God, I remember you from that folder! That was sheer madness.

But if I'd known its existence on the Haven would pit DDFans against, well, other DD-fans for all eternity, I would have posted there a LOT more. ;-)

I joined the Haven specifically as a shipper/dipper/dripper to see what I could stir up, ROFLMAO. I saw people getting crapped on for daring to hang out in the Robert Patrick folder, and as Doggett had become a favorite character of mine (I joined the summer after "The Truth" aired), that didn't sit right with me. So, in I charged, saying, "Look. I like ALL the characters and ALL the pairings and ALL the actors." Ahhh, and so many flames were born! Who was that one user who absolutely despised Doggett/RP and referred to him as a no-lips stalker of Scully who singlehandedly ruined the show? I've forgotten her name... I think she was banned for a while and came back as Mad Cow... is this ringing a bell? Anyway, she and some of her fellow rabid DD fans made a point of coming into the RP folder often to post crap. The Haven is where I learned the term 'troll' from. Good times. I found the GA fans to be somewhat more reasonable than the DD fans... I mean, at least GA had "The House of Mirth," a critically acclaimed movie that I loved to pieces. DD has only had "Return to Me," and while I thought that was cute, it was just fluff.... Sigh. At any rate, however, the rabids for either actor were scary as hell.

*shakes self free of reverie* Boy, I'm rather glad I've left the Haven, all things considered.... ;) I shall never find a more wretched hive of scum and villiany. :-D

Shhhh! Don't tell the tinhats I said this, but there apparently really will be a movie. Like, for 2005, maybe, if they're lucky, and it sounds like a bad idea anyway (let my dead show rest in peace!).

I'm pretty sure Fox doesn't give a shit what a fan-bought ad says, though. And it's not gonna make Chris Carter write a script for a (godforsaken) movie any faster anyway.

This is just so silly. Dude, I was IN LOVE with the X Files (and still am) and I would probably be right there in line for a second movie, but I've pretty much given up any hope of that and I SO wouldn't donate a cent for an AD...

Of course as an XF tinhat I will say OMG TEA LEONI AS SCULLY NO NO NO.

What she said? That's what I'm thinkin...

I liked how they decided Tea would be good as Scully because "she had a bit of experience with the role in 'Hollywood AD'" o_O And Gillian didn't have any experience from her ~200 episodes? Riiiiiiiiight.

I'd love a second, well-done movie in the near to far-off future...but if they can't get it to work right then I'd rather leave it all how it is now. I love every single frame of XF, couldn't hate it if I tried, and I'd love to keep it that way, thanks.

And people wonder why I'm only on the one mailing list these days...

I love XF wank more then life itself. The funniest thing about the movie campaign is a friend of mine (we like to post at Haven once in a while to *clears throat* start little fires) started the whole thing by posting a list of the most ridiculous 'demands' for the next movie. Then the tinhats decided that they would raise over $3,500 for that stupid ad. They've got a bit over $500 now - I don't see them raising much more. Which of course means that there will be much wank over returning the money to the donors.

I'm so glad that I didn't really know what fandom was back in my XF (Gods' rest it's soul) days. I just had fun, and read a little fic (my introduction to slash Mulder+Krycek4EVAOMGWTF!!!1!) and loved the show. Um, until they screwed it up. I'm still bitter.

Heh, I think it would be fun to see if TL or Julianne Moore was cast as Scully.

Yes, because we all know what GREAT CHEMISTRY DD and Julianne Moore had in that stupid alien movie...what the hell was the name of that? I was the biggest DD fan on the planet and even I refused to buy that one. Uck.

And also, Tea Leoni? Over my dead, rotting body. *Firmly adjusts tinhat*

Heh. Mostly this just made me nostalgic.
