dumb question
Pardon my plebeyness, but what is the story behind the "what the shit is this?" icons? I didn't see anything that explained it in the memories, and I'm curious, because it's really funny...

Ooh, I can answer this!

It's from the movie Dolemite, starring Rudy Ray Moore. Dolemite is a horrifically bad blacksploitation movie about a vengeful tubby pimp let out of prison to enlist his army of kung-fu prostitutes in a fight against another pimp.

"What the shit is this?" is one of Dolemite's best lines (along with "bitch, are you for real?" and "Dolemite is my name, and fucking up motherfuckers is my game!")

It happens to be one of my favorite movies. Also, I think I was probably the first person to have a "What the shit is this" icon, back before the original FW existed on LJ. I used to use it to post there, because the sentiment seemed so apropos to just about every wank.

Do I sound conceited? :)

Wow, that's where it came from? I had no idea. Awesome.

I had no idea that's where that was from. Then again, I only know Dolomite from Futurama, where it's "tough black mineral that won't cop out when there's heat all about"!

Hehe, not at all. :) I'm glad you answered. Sounds like a movie that I need to see, ASAP.

and you're right, it's incredibly apropos. I think I'll also be contributing to the legions of "what the shit is this?" icons, because as soon as I saw them I had some new ideas...

I didn't get to see the original Dolemite, but I *did* see "Human Tornado", which is his second movie. OMG that is more hairy blaxploitation ass than I have ever seen, or ever *wanted* to see before in my life. *_*

And if you listen closely, the black general in Matrix: Revolution says "What the shit" at some point, too. ^^

Oh god, the human Tornado. Where a key plot point is Dolemite rolling down a hill naked.

The one I really want to see, though, is "AVENGING DISCO GODFATHER!". *dies*

"Way down in the jungle deep,
And elephant stepped on a dignified monkey's feet.
The monkey said "Muthafucka can't you see?!?
You're standing on my goddam feet!"

And strangely on-topic - There's a Mad TV Dolemite skit on right now!

His woman Cocoa stole his pimp cane and ran off with Black Belt Jones. That's harsh.

I didn't know where it came from, but I didn't think it warranted an explanation. I rather liked it. :)

Am glad to know where it came from, even if I've never heard of Dolemite!

God help me that I know this, but Dolemite is actually name-checked in the song "California Love" by Tupac and Dr. Dre.

And now I know why. Thank, Fandom Wank!
