Tolkien is not only racist, but -- this is the Very Very Original Part -- also fascist. Apparently, the idea that Aragorn is the only legitimate ruler of Gondor is the "Fuhrer principle," whatever that means. Also, Denethor is a metaphor for capitalism, and Theoden's possession by Saruman means that the fascist pigs spit upon your constitutional monarchies. Or something. Anyway, lots of fun here.

I love the "disclaimer". Because, really, why bother reading the books? Especially when you can make all sorts of fun assumptions and theories about Tolkien by watching a movie made by some one else!

I think I've seen that argument before, over on one of the Usenet Tolkien groups. Back in 1996.

It's still amusing, which is why it's over in Argue Just To See Your Words Onscreen, excuse me, Debate; never fails to drive an argument.

The only person who doesn't come off like a complete asshat has to be one that pointed out that Sauron set up his empire in the east because he wanted to be far away from his enemies. Politics change, geography changes, stories don't.

Since when did trying to impress your "peers" by creating torturously inane interpretations of every piece of art around replace alcohol as the self-esteem booster of choice?

Am I the only one who remembers the days when a keg of Guinness and a couple liters of Maker's Mark were the way to escape having to write stupid essays replete with the sort of sophistry and meaningless natterings that grad school professors love so much?

And that disclaimer...Jesus, kid, shut the hell up and read the damned books before typing. Fandom_Wank Law: Admitting your ignorance does not excuse the products of said ignorance. The second you start out with a disclaimer in this vein, you're already a wanker.

BTW...Denethor was basically a viceroy...does the writer really believe Denethor put things to a vote?

Obviously! He was clearly elected by the populace of Gondor as dictator for life...

Oops... Dictators don't usually let people vote, do they? My bad.

Too bad they couldn't. If people could vote then obviously Faramir could have said something like 'What the fuck are you smoking dad? Frontal assault when you're outnumbered 100 to one sounds like a positively shitty idea to me... Anyone else with me on that?'

And why doesn't being more-or-less possessed (or at least distracted) by Sauron count, anyway?

Vasaris, who wishes she could have written papers on LOTR when doing the Eng. Lit. survey in high school. It would've beaten the shit out of Lord of the Flies.

Remember though, geek boy, you're not discussing tolkien.

If anything, you should be discussing jackson and his team of writers.

*snicker!*

Right, because when Jackson sat down to adapt Lord of the Rings, he thought to himself, "You know what? Damn these disgusting capitalist pigs! Heil Hitler!"

Also, I normally use a less sexist nomenclature and refer to human beings but the movies talk of 'men' and not 'people' and so in this post I do as well.

You must have gitten further than me. I got to I have not and most likely will not read the Lord of the Rings novels as I have very little interest. And pulled the plug. I'm sorry, but I can't be fanged reading a Lotr wank written by someone who can't even be bothered to read the source - yet then tries to debate the content.

OMGWTF?

When told once, "I have a right to my opinion!", Harlan Ellison replied, "No, sir. You have a right to an informed opinion."

How does one get the unmitigated gall to form such judgmental theories about a work without reading it? And blythely foist those theories onto the world? Does this numbnuts have no sense of shame, or even proportion? That disclaimer didn't just sound clueless - he actually came off as proud of his refusal to encounter the source material. How can someone be proud of an insistence on ignorance?

I live in Hungary. If you lay the map of Middle-Earth upon the map of Europe as we know it to date, my country is, ah, somewhere between the fields of Morannon and Gorgoroth. :PPP

And his brilliant reply: I'm sorry, I watched all three movies and 'Europe' was never once mentioned. I'm afraid your claim as to setting holds no water whatsoever.

BWAHAHAHAA!! So the fact that every single character in the film speaks with a British accent of one sort or another (well, except Celeborn, but he's just confused) doesn't clue this guy in to the setting at all, eh?

Seems we get a new wank to the same effect on a weekly basis around here - "Tolkien meant THIS, for there is proof in the books!" "no he didn't you asshat! here's the apendix counterproof!" (spelling left miserable for the sake of realism).

I think we need a NEWSFLASH: Tolkien Doesn't Care! icon for these things... I'd make one, but enh. My skillz r teh suck. XD
