I'm not beardy at all! *strokes beard*
All of this takes place on the official Black Library Forum. Black Library is a subdivision of Games Workshop, which makes the Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 games. They are little metal toy soldiers that you paint and then move around in a vague battle-like way while shouting stats and waving rulers.

Yes.

So, first, we have a kid sayin' what one of the guys at his store told him. Random little fanwank, no big harm, right?

"The GW staff members you know need to be shot for their stupidity, and for breeding sad little half baked ideas among the younger GW goers."

Your standard sad bastard reply, right?

The publisher gets involved, which leads to a very lovely reply, which includes the following:

"First off, I'd love to know where in the seven hells you get off calling me a beardy gamer? To my recollection, not only have we never met face to face, we've never played a game and thusly you have NO basis for calling me a beardy gamer. Wonderful compliment to a reader who's purchased every G&F, Space Wolf, GG, and short story collection the BL has ever put out."

Wow. Dude. Have you noticed you're contradicting yourself?

Gosh, Kate. You sound a little smug today.

*snerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk*

Oh, God, you don't know what GW wank is until you foolishly ask a question about a product whilst working in the design studio. And then it all comes out of the woodwork.

We went Christmas shopping at a mall about forty-five minutes away. The GW clerk recognized my brother by name.

*sniffs* Games Workshop wank. How I've missed you. Or not. As wanky as LotR and HP fandom can be, GW fans can be just as bad. If not worse because the average GW fan has sunk hundreds if not thousands of dollars and manhours into the fandom and a lot of them thinks that gives them the excuse to bitch and whine and snipe at every little thing.

*sniffles, wipes away a tear*

Oh beautious wank of geeky hobbies past, how do I love thee?

The worst part about this was the fact I was witness to a live performance of this some time ago in my local GW...three kids speculate fantasy being behind the chaos marines (just for a laugh, mind you), and the veterans wanked so hard and fast I was afraid they'd start throwing the minis at one another.

True story.

I...had no idea what the hell was going on except for the materialization of screechy South Park-esque voices to accompany the arguments.

That said, I will amass all my gamer's knowledge in this: "Rocks fall. Everybody dies."

Something Positive.

The final strip in the "PeeJee and Dragons" arc.

Oh, and . . . "I BUKKAKE FOR JUSTICE!!!"

*bows* Glad to be of service.

That particular strip is always worth referencing; all my gamer friends and I seem to have a special place in our hearts for it.

Beardy? What's it mean, my precious? (I can get a general meaning from context, of course, I'd just like a more exacting definition.)

Ahem. That's, "The Comic Book Guy", and for not knowing his proper name, you are hereby officially the worst human ever, and I hate you.

In GW fandom beardy is someone who exploits rules loopholes or imbalances to get an advantage over other players. Basically someone who ignores the "spirit of the game".

Ah, so THAT's what it means.

I learn all these useful words, and then people just look at me funny when I use them, appropriately and within the proper context, at the office.

Yes. But with even fewer redeeming traits. Assuming Magic players actually had any in the first place.

Assuming that-

Nah, never mind, too easy.

Heh, Magic players are so easy to make fun of.

All my friends in college swore they were addicted to Magic, and that if they taught it to me, I'd become addicted as well. They tried. Twice. Didn't take. Probably just as well, considering the amount I spend on manga and anime rent, utilities, groceries, and other essentials.

It was the same for me. Since I had played dungeons and dragons, my friends were sure I'd love Magic. I didn't.

Y'all should check out the GW newsgroups for some prime wank... does the name Erik Setzer ring a bell to anyone here?

*shudders nostalgically, if that's even possible*

The wank would go on for days. Weeks, even. And then it would all blow over until Erik showed up again, and the process would restart ad nauseum. I cringe just thinking about it...

"Well, if that be the case, I can readily give up my Gaunt's Ghosts for more Michael Stackpole, my Bill King for more Tolkien."

I am dead. Beardy man has killed me from laughingness.

As my friend Jack used to say, "Michael A. Stackpole, author of Cry of the Wookiee Sabre!"
