She's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack
[info]natsukigirl has returned with another topic guaranteed to spark as much wank as the previous one.

This time we've got scanlations

My favorite part is when she says that she trusts fan translators as much as "official" ones (quotation marks hers). Umm...since she's a fan and doing her own translation, isn't that sort of...argh...brain hurting too much from insane asshat fan logic.

Oh and she "humbly" tells us that she's not an elitist. Oh, except under very specific circumstances. Isn't there a law of some sort about that?

Edit: Now she's gone to mock_the_stupid to try and garner support.

Another Edit: Since she's made the [info]mock_the_stupid post friends only, I'll C&P it here so you don't have to join up to read.

Greed AND Stupidity

This is kind of a drawn out thing, and its very current, so if you feel like heavy reading, then this might be a good boredom-killer. This isn't so much funny as it is shockingly stupid:

The topic was scanlations. Scanlations are when you (someone without licence or copyright) scan every single page of a comic book (by someone else), plug in a translation, and publish the whole shee-bang online. Not only is it illegal, it is also highly immoral, as you can well imagine.

But guess what, apparantly half the people over at manga think that it is moral.

"Just because it's illegal doesn't make it immoral!" ... holy. hell.

Stupidity? I'd say so, have a look see. (the main post is by me, the stupidity is scattered around in the comments)

One more Edit for fun: When she finally responded to my comment in [info]manga I tore up her arguements, including pointing out that posting to [info]mock_the_stupid kind of indicates that she thinks people who disagree with her are stupid. So naturally she went over and deleted the post at m_t_s. But I posted the text of the post there at Manga so either she'll delete the post there too, or things will get wanky when the rest of the community notices.

I particularily like how she condemns scanlations as illegal (which they sort of are) but in her own journal, she tells us that her boyfriend is downloading seasons of Ranma 1/2 episodes, which is also illegal, but doesn't condemn HIM for it. (Especially seeing as how Ranma 1/2 has been licensed in the US for how long?)

As an added note - in the comments, she does call her boyfriend a cheap bastard, but I don't think that counts. X_X

I would say that downloading scanlations of a manga that is not already translated by a company is less serious that downloading an entire season of an anime that has been licensed for an eternity by Viz. But maybe that's just me.

So...she thinks scanslations are evil and offensive, but she's not a showoff cause she scanslated 2 chapters of something...huh?

TO CLEARIFY : They are mainly offensive because people are scanning the entire comic. Which is *shock* illegal.

Ah, I get it. Makes sense...I think...

I'd go over and comment again, but the last time I did so I got this in reply:

Btw, you didn't comment about it, but since you know of it... the "writing japanese names in the correct order" post from my journal that was posted along with the recent one at that other jounral place: It was about writing them both ways so that people who write it either way or the other could find each other and relevant communities on lj, which of course is a rational argument for writing both in the "interests" list... see? Naturally I will be able to find more people and communities if I type "haruki murakami" AND "murakami haruki" in my interests.

And boy howdy if I didn't read that about eight times in a row, and it STILL didn't make sense.

And didn't she promise not to come back for a week or something? BOO HISS.

Hee!

I think I was the only one who commented on it in the previous wank. ^_^ Everyone else sort of ignored it (I may be wrong, but I don't remember seeing any others)... but I was just really amused by her "Well, if you list [a Japanese name] the wrong way then you should also list it the right way. But I don't have to because I use the right way the first time." attitude.

She sidelines with the RIAA or Metallica or Equity or something doesn't she? Jesus fucking christ on a pogo stick, get OVER yourself! I have more bootleg recordings of theatre and opera than I can shake a very large and well lubed stick at, but 99% of them are because it's the only way I can GET a recording of a particular cast or a particular performance. I am teh evil copyright violator, and I don't give a flying fuck. Same situation with scanlations and funsubs of unreleased series. It's not as if people are sitting around not buying things they could be from a legit source because they're evil, nasty criminals who want to steal money from the authors and artists (in most cases at least), it's because there's stuff they want that just can't be had legally. ::snarl:: Guh, bootleg rant again, I've got to stop this.

Word 'em up. Gala and Opera d'Oro have been lifesavers for me, in terms of enabling me to listen to performances I might otherwise never have heard. Believe me, if I could give the artists their royalties, I would - legit labels usually have better sound quality and liner notes, anyway. But if I can't get it - well, how else am I supposed to hear that stuff? Time travel?

I absolutly DETEST scanlations and I'll be damned if my eyes have ever lit upon one.

...Is anyone else desperately fighting off the urge to find a page from a scanlation, upload it to their webspace, leave a comment that says "You promise?" in the subject line, and then post the scanlation in the comment?

...no?

Hmm. Then I guess I'm just feeling naughty today. ^_^

Arghhh, bitch, good for you that you can *allow* yourself to DETEST scanlations, I personally would be absolutely FUCKED without scanlations, as *gaspshock* yes, there are countries in the world which don't sell manga! Yeah you heard that right! To get my fix, I would have to order them for hard money from abroad, now isn't that pretty?

Therefore, I thank Jesus/Buddha/Illúvatar and whatever deity for scanlations!!

Also, "offencive"? Kindly do not read. No one's told you to.

(Insert the rhythmic and lovely hammering of head against desk here.)

Oh, not the scanlation argument again... honestly, every group of even semi-serious manga/anime fans goes through the 'scanlations/fansubs are TEH EVOL/no they're not!' argument less than a month after they're founded, and they're guaranteed to go through it again a thousand times before the group collapses in a jangle of netsp33k and LOLing.

You know what I'd like? You know what I'd really like? I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that no topic can ever be resolved to everybody's satisfaction. I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that 'agreeing to disagree' and shutting up is a valid resolution. I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that 'do what I say, not what I do' is not a valid resolution. I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that arguing with people only has about a five percent chance of changing their mind. I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that most people would rather save face by continuing to argue than ever, ever admitting they were wrong, no matter how much evidence they've been confronted with. I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that arguing on the Internet is a total and utter waste of your time. I'd sure like it if everyone in the world realized that mockery is the most sane response to you high-pony-ridin' asshats.

But, then, there wouldn't be any use for fandom_wank, would there? And that's not any fun.

In conclusion, I apologize for the screamin' black spooge I just got in your eyes, and it's obviously far too early in the morning for me to be on f_w. Now, please feel free to remind me that 'discussion for the sake of discussion' is a valid and worthwhile use of the Internet, and I will accept liberal use of the term 'whiny bitch'.
