Fansub wank
"Where can I find Yami no Matsuei fansubs?" "Fansubs are evil and wrong!" "Well, EXCUSE ME for being poor and living somewhere I don't have access to the official release!"

I really hate doing this. I LIKE that community-I love yaoi, I have fun with my friends there, and people post good stuff. So it pains me when I see wank erupting there. u.u;;;

Dude, that girl is bitching about paying $60 for the Yami boxed set? Pshaaaaw, I bought mine for eighty.

Suck it up and shell out the cash if you want it so bad. It's worth it.

60$ is too much for a person living where the normal salary is about 150 $ per month

I can see her reasons for not wanting to buy it, though. o_o Not everyone's rich. And honestly, I distribute Yami fansubs to all my friends who want them, even if it's already out in stores, mostly because it's less hassle.

Not having enough money is... really no excuse NOT to buy the official version if released there. If you really want it, you'll save up for it, even if it takes months and months of saving.

When my sister and I started out with anime, we saved for the DVDs/VHS (Yes, we've been into anime for a long time. :P We still have old Slayers tapes from like 95-96) we wanted. Besides that, I rather curl up in front of my TV and watch the episodes than download them and watch them on my computer. In fact, I would offer to record the episodes on a tape if a friend of mine REALLY wanted the episodes but couldn't afford them.

And I won't mention that I've seen the box set go for cheaper as well. I think the lowest was $40 (I paid $60 for mine. ;_; ) and the official english box set is being sold over Ebay too, I think, but don't trust them. >.>

And she was being rather rude too. She apoligized on the community, but it would've been better if she e-mailed the person.

Is it just me or is the Yaoi community attracting more and more wank in the past few months? O_o

I wonder if these folks know about the glory of buying things used. You can really save a ton of money buying things secondhand. It's made my life a lot easier.

If you're willing to put the effort forth you can find the series you want for a reasonable price.

Same here, but that's because my computer a) hates me and b) is slower than shite. I long for the day when DVD players will be able to play DivX files. *longs*

I agree. I buy bootlegs all the time because I use them for making music videos (though I do collect the American releases of my favorite anime), but I'll admit that it makes me a little less than moral ^_~. If you're going to do something illegal, then just do it. But trying to justify it by saying "Well, I don't have the money, so that means it's okay for me to steal," is like...tacky, or something. You're not exempt from the law just because it's inconvenient for you :P.

Downloaded anime episodes serve 2 purposes for me: Seeing stuff that isn't liscenced or testing out a series, and fodder for music video clips.

I want the Fruits Basket DVDs, but they're $40 a piece. I'm getting the fansubs from an ML, but I'm still gonna save for the DVDs just because.

Facelessevil, has it ever come to your creepy little mind that there are countries where the only way to get your hands on an anime is to DOWNLOAD IT?! As it is, there's no fucking way for me to rent it, because the only anime videos in the videostores are the n-th OVA of the fucking POKEMON. Not all peole live in the States or Japan. So before going all patronizing on me try to be a little more objective.

...Maybe it's just me, but thefacelessevil didn't really sound all that patronizing in her reply.

But actually, I'm right with her on the country thing. The argument that because the US can get something, *we're* not allowed it is completely fucking *stupid* and really doesn't help the US's image of thinking they are the only ones that count. By that logic, the US shouldn't have fansubs either as Japan has access to the show...

The situation is improving in Australia by great leaps and bounds, but for a while, fansubs were my only source - not dowloaded, as I can't afford that kind of connection.

I haven't bought subs for a while as lately there's been enough lovely stuff coming out, but no one tells me I can't have my Utena just because it's not licensed here. ~sulks~ And I'm one of the odd people who does the right thing and replaces my fansubs with official releases as soon as they become available, even though I'm dirt poor.

I think it's a natural consequence of yaoi becoming more popular: the more fans in general, the higher the potential percentage of wankers. Mind you, I'm not complaining about yaoi's popularity; I just think the fandom has entered a new stage, and is experiencing growing pains.

[info]yaoi has been volatile for a while. You should have seen the wank fly back when everyone and their mother posted about Marriage Week. When someone made the comment that it would have been easier to make *one* post about the subject and not twenty million, people of course replied with "OMG YOU MUST BE HOMOPHOBIC!"

My fandoms are so wanky. ^ ^;

[info]virago

Okay, when did "I saved up for a few months to buy a series I'd really like" become "rich"? I do sympathize with not being able to get as many series in her area, but I really, really hate it - and I've seen it elsewhere, so this rant is not coming out of nowhere - when people start whining that they deserve to get stuff for free, because they're not rich. Bitch, neither am I, but you know, if I want something that badly I save up for it. Quit your whining that you should have it for free because "all you people are rich and I'm not, wah wah." No, we just know how to manage what money we have, and we aren't demanding little brats about it.

*breath*

Granted, I realize how lucky I am to be able to afford what I can have, not least of which is the net access that allows me to be bitching about this right now. But if I ever start whining that I deserve something merely because I want it, or that the rules don't apply to me because it's not convenient (good point, up there), then shoot me. Lots.

The anime vidding community gets people all the time who bitch that they "need" to download series/movies/whatever that are already out, because "wah wah I have no money and I waaaaaaaant it." (i.e. right this second.) And I'm proud of the community at large for bitchslapping these people into next week while simultaneously giving them umpteen alternatives (borrow, rent, save up, look for bargains, etc.). Sometimes the nimrods won't take those alternatives and still whine, which is where it gets very frustrating...

...hence this rant, and I'm done now.

I usually go with the "borrow" or "rent" options, myself, either from my anime club's library or from Netflix. I understand that options are more limited for people in other parts of the country and/or world, and I certainly sympathize. But basically, I agree with you that fansubs are a privilege and not a right, and that there are ways around using them that don't involve ripping anyone off.

Or worse, they bitch that they *have* to use the fansubs, because it's too expensive to get a capture card or too difficult to figure out how to rip DVDs. Few (if any) of them are willing to learn the basics of simple things to make their vids look better, like cropping subs or learning how to encode good vids on their own, and god forbid you tell them to read an FAQ.

Don't mind me - I recently had 40 seconds of an AMV I worked on for months ruthlessly plagiarized in someone's video and I'm still pissed over it. Thankfully the girl is too stupid to figure out how to distribute the video outside of MSN Messenger, but it doesn't decrease the desire to bitchslap the hell out of her.

*deep, calming breaths*

And on the issue of YnM - CPM has talked in the past in their panels about how they go through great pains when licensing a title to try to get it so they can release it as region 0. They can't always get away with it (in particular, they had to change Utena to region 1 in order to keep the license) but Yami no Matsuei/Descendents of Darkness *is* region 0. So folks in Europe, folks in Australia, South America, Asia, Africa, Antarctica (?) - so long as you can buy it from your favorite on-line retailer, the CPM (US Manga Corps) release of Descendents of Darkness should play on your dvd player. ^_^

Ya know, she should have just downloaded the fansub when it was unlicensed. It still would have been illegal, but at least it wouldn't be as blatant.

If you hear about a series after its licensing, you're out of luck. Sorry.

I actually waited a year to get fansub ONE PIECE DVDs off of eBay b/c I thought it was licensed here already. I read on the AnimeNation news section that FUNimation got it. A year later, I read ONE PIECE is still being fought for. So I bought the fansubs with "Namoi", "Saron", "Liar Bu", "Sunkist" and "Roof" but as soon as it is released over here I will immediately buy it. I will miss the strange name changes though. ^^;;;;

Aaaaah the OP HK fansubs. Compared to some I've seen coughSaintSeiyacough, they're not that bad aside from the flat out bizzare name translations.

Sad thing is my brother and I were such big fans of the manga that we probably could've turn of the subs and recited the dialouge if we really wanted to.

I have the Captain Tsubasa old series, exhibited abot TWELVE years ago in TV. I searched for MANY months for the episodes, and when I finally found them, I saved money and tapes specially to get them. And it's worth the saving. Now I and my friends are saving some more bucks for G Gundam DVD's. ^^

So, if I'm NOT rich and could invert my money and time right to get what I want - why can't Maya do the same? No excuse, sweetheart.
