"Hyenas are our bretheren."
RattleRain crossposts an anti-Lion King rant to several groups, including rec.arts.disney.animation.

From: RattleRain (lisamorgendunst2@hotmail.com)
Subject: Lion King just really stupid, lame, and slanderous
Newsgroups: rec.arts.movies.past-films, rec.arts.disney.animation, rec.animals.wildlife, rec.arts.animation
Date: 2004-01-11 12:19:49 PST

Stupid because we see all the animals ceremoniously bow to the newborn lion cub. Isn't this cub gonna grow up to a big lion and eat them and their offsprings? Lions aren't exactly vegans. Translated to human affairs, it means a priveleged elite based on noble blood has the right to lord over all the poor peasant saps that get it up the ass.

It's lame because it's politically correct, the message being that new generation of white boys(Broderick) should look up to black people(voice actors of Broderick's lion parents)as moral exemplars while white male lion, of course, represents Euro-centric evil.

Worst, however, is Lion King's slanderous misrepresentation of animals. In the movie, hyenas are safari trash. Until relatively recent times, lions were seen as noble hunters and hyenas as dastardly scavengers and thieves. In reality, hyenas are not only better hunters than lions but more often lose their kill to marauding, thieving lions. Yet, because of Lion King, kids all over the world will think hyenas are vermin that they are not. They may be the prettiest animals and they do make funny sounds but they tough, fierce animals that can hold their own against the meanest, baddest critters in Africa.

Some of the veteran members have a history with this troll and mock him, and someone else pops in to give us a link to history of this troll, better known as Gaza, since about 1997 as well as his MO, as a warning. (Usenet takes trolling really seriously!)

"Gaza" comes back and violates Godwin's:

I don't mind lions being shown as lords of the jungle(or savannah). But, other animals happily greeting the birth of a lion cub? That's like watching black slaves welcome the birth of a massa or Jews celebrating the birth of one of Goerring's kids.

And, of course, a few people take the guy seriously:

"Gaza, it's a fucking DISNEY movie, you dolt. Does this have any significance to you?"

Samantha finally decides she's had it, telling the troll (now back under a foreign name, just like in the MO) to GET OVER IT! IT'S JUST A MOVIE!!!1 Pot, kettle.

"THE HYENA IS NOBODY'S BOOBOO!"

The troll's response after being told to fuck off. (I must icon this...)

'Tis but a small wank, but it's still going on...

EDIT: Links should be fixed now.

Oh, GOD. -_-;;; Not EVERYTHING in the world is supposed to be 100% politically correct, and there isn't always a Deep Hidden Message/Meaning in stuff! Why do people have to psychoanalyze the world?!

Hyenas scare the piss out of me. I saw a nature program once where they had surrounded their prey and were in the process of ripping it to shreds, all the while making with the maniacal laughter. Better hunters, maybe. Just let me know when they're doing their superior hunting so I can change the channel and watch cartoon characters beating each other up with playing cards.

Hyenas == assholes of the natural world.

Really. I mean, EVERY time you're watching a nature show, if cute little Fluffy the lion cub, or George the baby zebra, or whatever gets killed and their soft underbelly eaten, who do you think did it?

The hyenas.

"Oh, and look at how they tear out Baby's intestines and wolf them down like linguini. Oh, those hyenas, and the cycle of the natural world."

I swear, they just fly in a crate of hyenas when they're making a nature film and open it when they want to mentally scar the viewers, who have just bonded to the creature that's gonna be the hyena's next lunch.

*shudders*

Ironically, I liked the hyenas in the Lion King. So kiss my grits, Gaza!

ah, pretty standard usenet fare. :) I've seen far worse. But I'm getting a kick out of this guy-- you don't often see trolls who are just out to start stupid arguments, they mostly just want to isnult and piss off as many people as they can.

the links are working weirdly for me (they all go to the last post) so I'm not sure which link refers to which post (except where you've quoted)-- but I'm definitely making a "the hyena is nobody's booboo!" icon.

sniff, now you're making me nostalgic for usenet... I barely read it these days. no time...

I hate TLK, but I have my own reasons: I worked for the stage production for the two and a half years it was in Los Angeles, and I'm bloody well sick of it. Eight shows a week for thirty months while getting treated shabbily by the Disney suits . . . AUGH!

. . . never did get tired of "Shadowlands," though, which in the stage show has been given lyrics and turned into a solo piece for Nala as she leaves the Pridelands. Great lighting, great tune.

PC + Disney = hideous lame silliness that completely destroys the happy unreality of same. Look what happened to the Pirates ride, for gods' sakes. Political analysis and cartoon fables just do not mix.

Still though, it's kind of a dumb thing to get so hot under the collar about. Geez, don't people get the idea that if you don't like a movie, you can just not watch it?
