It Takes a Lot Of Balls to be a Pokémon Master...
Ok, I mod over at Bulbagarden, and let me tell you, some weird shit goes on over there.

At Kanna's behest, I must post the sheer wank-n-weirdness of one such thread. Please to note that this wank contains events that have not occured in the English run yet.

Our story begins when Geodude posts a thread about something he saw in Nintendo Power and if it will affect a character on the show. (the character May is also the female lead in the Ruby/Sapphire games)

BenRG makes a passing mention that the show writers tend to shy away from giving the characters powerful Pokémon

Kaz begs to differ

BenRG refutes her

Not much wanky so far, but trust me, when it rains, it pours.

Kaz tells Ben he has "no plausable example" to use.

Ben says that he was kidding about his first example, but keeps refuting Kaz.

Kaz's reply gets the wank going at an even keel.

But Ben takes the ball and runs with it, so to speak, as he brings up the issue of Pokéballs and capture, among many, MANY other things.

And thus begins the wank.

Highlights include thusly:

Pokéball Peril...which, sadly, was the name of an actual episode. However, the episode did not include the wanktastic lines "What show do you watch?" or "I also think that you read 1984 too much."

Your posts don't matter, in which Kaz yells at someone for posting truths rather than a common fan legend (see, in one episode, James suddenly has a Weepinbell that evolves into a Victreebell, but it wasn't said where he had gotten it in the first place. Rumors had abounded that he had stolen it from the place it was first seen and it was edited in the dub, but the truth was that the Japanese version was equally vague on how he got it)

Same fan posts telling her where James *really* got it (which *was* on the show, as the writers backpedaled three seasons late to fill in a plot hole.)

Kaz hates to be wrong, so she claims that James *really* stole it from the breeding center, despite the fact that the episode dispelling this had been shown in her country at this time. Her exact quote is probably the wankiest thing in the entire thing:
Oh no, Johto canon, help help, I'm so scared.

Ever seen "The Breeding Centre Secret", where, in the REAL [as in, Japanese] version, James STOLE it before he ran? And 4KIDS dubbed that it was his to stop the little kiddies stealing their neighbour's plants cos James does it?

Considering NONE OF THIS ever happened, and that it was PROVEN ON THE SHOW THAT HE DID NOT STEAL IT, and that the dub DID NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT HOW HE GOT IT, I wonder how she got to be a mod.

Yes, you read that right. Kaz, as well as BenRG and Geodude, are my fellow mods. These are not clueless newbies making these posts.

And I think that's enough for now. Read the rest of the wank for yourself. I have to clean my monitor.

Rocketshipper: Wasn't the original reason you got into this debate because someone said the writers have Ash ditch all his "powerful" pokemon in favor of weaker ones?

Kaz: Yes. Unfortunately, I can't type at light-speed with my left hand. ¬¬

*sporfle* Oh that was a beautiful faux pas. So true, so wanky.

If you want more wank, just poke around the site. Look for topics more than three pages long, she's generally posted in them.

There's a *huge* one that started about flaming in the fanworks lounge...and somehow wound up invoking Godwin's law alone I don't know *how* many times.

Thank you, hon - my power grows daily. Dear me. ~settles happily to read~ Oh, the wank nostalgia for the Pokemon days of yore. And I'm wondering if Kaz was actually the one who made me finally declare that I was leaving that bloody mess of a fandom and fleeing to the most obscure fandom I could think of. (Yay for Malory Towers.) I'm not sure it was her, though, so I may be libelling her.

Considering NONE OF THIS ever happened, and that it was PROVEN ON THE SHOW THAT HE DID NOT STEAL IT, and that the dub DID NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT HOW HE GOT IT, I wonder how she got to be a mod.

Because being a successful Pokemon fan means remembering that the answer to any argument, or to solving anything you don't like, or to correcting any apparent sexual preferences that are inconvenient to you, lies in typing very fast (with one hand, apparently): "HAVE YOU SEE THE JAPANESE EPISODE? IT WAS CHANGED IN THE DUB!" There's this fabled Japanese version in which Satoshi and Shigeu have regular hot sex and/or Satoshi is engaged to Kasumi, Kojiro is the world's most heterosexual manhunk, and Yamato and Kosaburo regularly mow down small children with machine guns.

Always extremely irritating amusing when someone who obviously hasn't seen it is using it in an argument against someone who has.

and Yamato and Kosaburo regularly mow down small children with machine guns.

Hey, I have that copy, and not only do Yamato and Kosaburou mercilessly kill small, defenseless children, they also kick puppies!
Now those are MY kinds of villains!

...um, yeah. Eons ago I was big into Pokemon/Team Rocket/Yamato and Kosaburou fandom. Reliving teh wank brings a tear to my nostalgic self. *sniff*

Oddly, the most violent character they've had seems to be horribly unpopular, despite people's urges to write violence into characters that don't really demonstrate it.

Sort of like how everyone gets into shipping, but Magical Pokémon Journey--the shippiest series *ever*--failed miseribly. People tend not to like it when popular fanon stuff becomes canon.

Kick growlithes, please, not puppies. Although that should be, for full wnak value, whatever growlithes are called in Japanese - I'm too lazy to check.

I don't care *what* Yamato kicks as long as that version also ends up with her in Domino's arms.

The really funny thing is that one of the other mods, Dogasu, runs a very comprehensive site about dub changes, etc.

It seems that any stupid thing tends to get blamed on dubs, even if it happened in the original as well. For instance, in one episode, TR can't go through a cave because it's full of Onix and they don't have a water type--but Dogasu points out they have a grass type; quite effective against rock.

I told a friend of mine this and she said "stupid dubbers".

*sigh* There was nothing in what I said that would have implied it was a dub error. Given that their inability to go through the cave is a *plot point* during the episode...

Yup. People seem to think that translating into English, even if an extremely faithful job is done, automatically makes it suck and destroys story. I know they've switched a fair amount around in the dub or changed it, for Pokemon, but I doubt it's THAT much, considering it's a kids-aimed show anyway.
(Fruits Basket has such a nice dub... Tohru's English voice is so CUTE!)

Hell, I just wish I knew where the hell this was going. No thanks, I'll stick to Shippers and leave the real world of Pokemon alone. More fun to make it all up, as Shippers do. :P

Itty bitty quibble--Ben's not a mod over there. Otherwise, Boardland wank is much fun.
