Ok then...
It's on the main page! I'm asking!

What the heck is a BNF? And why do I see it everywhere?

BNF = Big Name Fan. Someone everybody knows and has influence of some kind, archivist/popular writer/whatever.

Possibly f_w needs a page devoted to explaining injokes, abbreviations and why Snacky's Law is better than Godwin's and makes Baby Jesus touch himself.

Love the icon!

And seriously...when I first heard the term, it actually seemed to mean something. Like, maybe someone who organised conventions or some such, someone who was more or less 'in' with the particular show/author/person/whatever and provided information or services to the fandom.

Now, I hear about the sort of people being given the 'BNF' label and usually, my reaction is 'Who?' usually followed by 'Who cares?'. It seems like everyone who writes a popular fan fiction prances about with the BNF badge these days.

Though, to be fair, its usually other folk pinning the badge on them.

This has been an unscheduled semi-rant from the author of Nothing Anyone Has Heard Of and the webmaster of Sweet F. A.

It's a stupid term to begin with, so maybe a prolonged campaign of stabbing people everytime they use it would be a better long-term solution.

Okay, I'm just a nobody here, but what if you have a page explaining the common abbreviations and links to the threads where the in-jokes started? That way you avoid the whole 'it's not funny if you have to explain it' dribble.

This happens to be one of those communities whose members turn up everywhere with their in-joke icons, confusing the hell out of people not familiar with them, but who would probably appreciate the joke if they knew what it was. Someone saying 'this is a beaded pony!' got a 'eh??' reaction from me before I stumbled across the full quote (and typo).

C'mon old-timers, have a heart and help us newbies out?

BNF isn't just a Fandom_ Wank thing, though; I've seen it used elsewhere.

And to the person who complained about the memories, I give you this. The memories are open to everyone, so skiming through them (especially the on titled Memorable Questions) would probably help.

When people mention in their ljs that they're elite by association because they know someone.. not that you and I recall such a conversation, of course... you can guess that person is a BNF, even if she'll yell at you for suggesting it. That will do as a workable definition for now.

When in doubt, create a community. It's the all-purpose answer to everything. I mean, we only have like two or three hundred ancillary comms to keep up with right now -- after spending 21.53 hours a day going through them, we still have approximately 2.47 hours left where we have to snort coke to pass the time. Sleep is not an option, and there's a limit to how much RL research we want to do on the "now he dead from coke" in-joke. So a new community devoted to fucking with gullible noobs answering questions is the perfect solution.

If you are who I think you are, here's some old school Digimon fandom BNF examples that no longer really work because the fandom is pretty much dead. If it isn't dead, don't tell me. Please. I like being in hiding.

Cynthia, Piedmon's Lady - Way back when, she was on every messageboard I've seen, pushing her wacky off-the-wall pairings and fanfics. Even had a legion of fans for awhile. Over time she became less vocal and the legion of fans dispersed. Still writing fics, I think. There might even be people who haven't heard of her.

Megchan, our own [info]kyuuketsukirui, used to be a BNF back when Megchan's Digimon Sekai was still up and her boards were THE place to get Digimon info. If you wanted the straight dope on Digimon, she was the one to go to because she was the Saban translator for Digimon and a few other shows. Since then, the Digimon Sekai was taken down, the boards locked up and deleted, and Grace has the freedom to do other things like RPF and The Establishment. Yay.

Kale, the infamous Takari author whose fics were really out of character, but Takari fans still loved him anyway for some reason only the fandom gods know. Has since moved on to original fiction, but his fanfics are still being passed around in dark alleys and his name spoken in whispers of reverence. Bah.

There are probably more, but I don't recall because I've been inactive since Frontier aired and moved on to the greatness of Kamen Rider.

Others:

Lord Archive, author of the Red Digivice Diaries, a series of stories styled as intelligent erotica despite unfortunate tendancies to refer to the ubiquitous penis as a "rod" or a "love wand."

Kendra, Digimon Empress. I remember her best for 1)early groundbreaking use of the imaginary sister as sock puppet, 2) illusory attendance at Harvard, 3) legendary stalkerish qualities. Also, for writing a story wherein a character is found to be bleeding from a major extracranial wound for days. Days, people.

Don't mind me, just bitter wanking
[info]kannaophelia
2004-01-19 03:48 am UTC (link)
The problem with the definitions you're being given is that you're not really being told that BNF isn't really a flattering term, at least not here. It implies an ability and a desire to impose wanking on others.

If you're really lucky, like me, you get none of the perks and aren't actually a real BNF with power and 400 reviews to every fic, but you still will know that if anyone agrees with you in an argument, whoever is on your side will be desribed at some point as your rabid attack dog or minion deliberately set on them, even if you not only didn't ask them to but you don't have a clue who they are. (And, probably, they don't have a clue who *you* are. Logic doesn't come into this.) And if someone behaves like a complete fucktard to you and your friends and then leaves the fandom when they weren't really contributing anymore anyway? Apparently, it means you personally drummed them out by daring to show you were upset, because you have some unknown evil power.

All this is why Charabok is only being saved from death right now because I'm on my way to bed. But then, she's only teasing, anyway. ~huggles her~

XX Kanna, who loves being in a tiny fandom where everyone knows everyone anyway and BNFs aren't necessary.

*pet**pets newbie* Daaaaamn, girl.

*laughing* Most newbies tend to stay quiet for awhile before posting anything, preferring to stay on the sidelines and read to catch up on the injokes and stuff. S'what I did, so that by the time I actually joined and started posting, I knew pretty much all the lexicon.

Of course, the drawback to this is that they also wind up being kinda shy when they first post anything. I've gotten sorta tired of seeing posts starting out with "Okay, this may not be wank, so please don't shoot me!". O_o But you seem to be jumping right in and swimming, so that's good at least.

Most of the in-jokes can actually either be found by reading back a few months *which is actually a lot more fun than it sounds. Plus, whenever a wanker returns to be wanked again, you'll have fond memories of their last wanking* or finding another post in which someone asked the same question. Because, believe me, you're not the first person to ask "What's a BNF?"

The second most common question I've seen is "Who is She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Wanked?" Trust me, if you've not seen the name yet, you will eventually. (Umm, it's Stormfreak, just so you know - we don't like to say the name, as it kinda tends to *draw* her here) *I think she got brought up last week in the little_needle wank. If the tag doesn't work, that says little_needle* Here's a link to something she pulled last year. There's a lot more history involved - a *lot* - but that's the best link I can give, considering that most of her other wank in regards to F_Wank has dissolved into the ether. (I wasn't actually around when that happened - pity - but I found that myself by cross-referencing and stuff. O_o)

Besides, if there's one skill that F_Wank has helped me develop, it's the skill to be a nosey, digging little web-ferret. I'd recommend you try to develop this skill a bit, too. ^_^ It'll come in handy down the road.

What I find amusing (not at you for asking the question, but at some of the replies above) is that "BNF" is not an F_W injoke. If I'm reading this right, it actually dates back to conventions in the eighties and predates the Internet. Funny how things go around...
