My first (mini) wank, coming from Deleterius to you!
Deleterius, the HP and LOTR Mary Sue report comm at LJ, is a breeding ground for wank. This one might be small compared to tohers, but still...

What started with an innocent MS report, derivated to a catfight that might be going for quite a while...

*sigh* At times like this I'm glad HP's not my fandom.

I usually stay away from the HP stuff, but this is just funny.

FPB says: "And I repeat: the rest of the world has little respect or admiration for this strange business of getting barely legal girls to gyrate and scream in mini-skirts."

Yet, inside, I can not help but feel bad for 'the rest of the world'. They don't know what they are missing. ::wink::

From the fic: When lunch time came and they were having some food

Um, well, yeah.

FPB didn't not change her review since you wrote this.

Indeed, the rest of the world looks at this American institution with bemusement not unmixed with contempt.

Could FPB be a UN spokesperson? Could this be it - The end of American cheerleaders forever and ever?

How could this happen so close to Super Sunday and The Big Game(TM)?

Stay tuned...

Indeed, the rest of the world looks at this American institution with bemusement not unmixed with contempt.

So we enhanced sports, which are typically watched, by vast majority, by men, and added in attractive women wearing attractive and rather brief outfits.
Gee, what the hell was America thinking when it came up with THAT one?
(Actually, I've read reviews and such by older sports reviewers, and they seem to share much the same vitriol for cheerleaders... of course, these same reviewers often tend, in unrelated articles, to talk a lot about all their failed marriages, to wax nostalgic about how their mothers stayed in the kitchen cooking for them for hours, about how women need to know how to cook and clean if they want to have a happy marriage, and often mention a longing for "simpler times" when men went out and worked and women had a large meal ready when they got home. My personal observation, draw your own conclusions.)
Though as an additional note, I think the below-college-age cheerleaders are a bad idea, at least in the same outfits. I remember some story that was around ten years ago about how they were bringing a guy up on child pornography charges for going to a high school football game and taking pictures of cheerleader panty shots and provocative poses, and putting them up on a website. The reporter was acting all scandalized, saying "We found these pictures SO offensive that we felt the need to censor them for airing on television!" Even at twelve, I was sitting there thinking, "So... it's obscene to take pictures and post them up... even though it's the exact same thing anyone that actually went to the game and sat in the stands could see?"

Hermione? A cheerleader? Er...no. That is not Hermione, that's someone prancing about in a silly costume and using her name.

Just...no. And we don't HAVE cheerleaders at British schools. Thank god.

You don't know what you're missing! Airheaded bimbos who prance around in skimpy outfits who're ready to put out for anything with a penis. That's what they are.

At least, that's what most of them are.

And to think I skipped right over that fic. I remember the description from my Chapter Owl email. I also remember thinking, 'Heh. No way, dudette. My good spork is in the dishwasher.'

I'm proud of my bloated fandom. We write some of the worst fics ever seen. We provide some of the best wank - Evah. Damn. Consider the laughter we've provided. I bet people have reconsidered suicide because of us. We're like Mothah Fuckin' Theresa or something.

Despite the supreme cuteness that an anime-style fanart of Hermione as a chearleader would be... no, don't really see her engaging in any extracurricular activities that don't have a strong intellectual aspect to them. If they even had cheerleaders in England, which they apparently do not.

The wank isn't coming from Deletrius, it's from FictionAlley.

HERMIONE as a cheerleader? I was a cheerleader once (I'm in Malaysia), and I'm a bit Hermione-like, but I can't see her as a cheerleader unless it was a funny fic.

hmm.

ah,that makes more sense.

Though I was confused because the reviewers kept telling the writer to put the fic on Riddikulus, so I thought it wasn't there at first.

(Riddikulus, TDA, and Astronomy Tower share a review board)

I love the fact that a Harry Potter fan takes the time out to describe how horribly the writer mangled the story Bring it On. Because to destroy a children's book and and cinema classic of cheerleader squad rivalries is beyond wrong.

This actually amused me the most, from an honest FA review...

Also on the topic of style, try to avoid excessive use of the caps lock key, if you can. It was alright for Lavender's poster, but having Hermione yell in all caps at Ron for a whole sentence... it just looks bad. If you want to emphasize something, use bold or italics, and that'll get the point across just fine.

Um...

Isn't shouting at people in all cap basically CANON for HP??? After all, JKR herself did it in the latest one!

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]rann
2004-01-19 09:32 am UTC (link)
Yup. And honestly, unless it's just going on and on and on, I don't see what the problem is. A paragraph or two is definitely waaay too much, but bitching about a sentence being in all-caps to represent yelling...?
Sometimes, something along the lines of ", she shouted angrily." just doesn't convey the proper feel.

Pointless...

I can't believe that a stupid story about "Hermione the Cheerleader and her Totally Awesome Adventures with her Like-Minded Attractive Pals" garnered however many pages of reviews/flames. I mean, why bother with the grammar nitpicking and hoity-toityness? It's fuckin' Harry Potter cheerleading...how good is it ever going to be?

But still, my comment on Deletrius stands: the story totally reminded me of "Saved by the Bell".

(Reply to this)

Um...actually...

actually, just to raise a little point, I'm at uni in Oxford, and my college has cheerleaders. The people who have chosen to take part enjoy it as a way to relax given the excessive amount of work we get here. We may be an exception, but it is possible!
