You Spoiled My Wank!
[info]heather_nicole really hates being spoiled for her nighttime soap opera "The O.C.".

So it's plenty o'fun when [info]nadien rejects such purity.

Uh-oh! "I propose banning her from the community, and perhaps re-wording the community rules to include spoilers of any kind."

Although, avoiding this particular spoiler would be hard to do under the best of circumstances.

Spoiler whore or spoilerphobic, there's enough wank here on both sides for all.

I wonder if this girl complained to the movie theater management about those horrific spoilers that some asshole projectionist put in front of the feature presentation for all those upcoming films.

If she did, I'd be on her side. The preview for What Lies Beneath practically summarized all the best parts of that movie, not to mention giving away major plot points, and it was hardly unique in that respect.

Isn't that annoying? You watch the promo, gradually deciding, "Yes, I'd really like to see this." But in the last 30 seconds, you get one (or more) too many story clues. Now you've got an 85-100% chance of easily guessing all major plot points, as well as the ending. "Hmm. Should I even bother with it now?"

*nods* It happens for TV shows too. I have friends in the 24 fandom who simply stopped watching the promos last season because they gave too much away.

I don't know about 24 or What Lies Beneath, but whenever I've seen that happen it usually means the story is pretty predictable anyway.

I've seen many comedy trailers that give away every good joke in the whole thing, but... dude, if you can give away every good joke in 60 seconds then you didn't have that many good ones, now did you?

My personal favourite was when Sky One advertised the final episode of Buffy season five with a shot of Buffy's gravestone. Nice. Evil Announcer Woman also has a habit of prefacing shows with 'Next on Your Favourite Show, Boy1 sleeps with GuestStar3. But don't worry, she's dead by next week, enjoy the episode...'

That is annoying. But seriously? Go on the internet, and sooner or later you will see spoilers. It's reasonably certain that the stars will remain in the sky and the world continue to turn after this event.

(American) Ring - the trailer had her coming out of the telly.
(Japanese) Ring (seen first) - we had no idea and screamed like girls.

Yeah, but the two movies even out since the American version was so much more thrilling than the Japanese one.

I saw the preview for that, and it spoiled exactly bugger-all for me. The track titles on the DVD, on the other hand, were another matter, and I'm glad I didn't read them before I watched the movie.

I would like to know what the hell this shrill hysteria about "spoilers" is about, personally. Where does it come from? Why does it exist? Has it always been with us, and the people who had it just had sense enough in bygone days to know they were being irrational fucknuggets? Or did the great bards of times past get up in the mead hall to say "Hwaet! Following is the story of Beowulf and the Dragon -" only to have some teenie in a wimple shriek "OMG I dint no ther was a dragon u spoiled meeeee! My life is OVR!!11!"? Was the opening of Romeo and Juliet greeted by people going "OMGWTFBBQ!! U told me teh end!!! Now Im just gonna have to LEAVE n u will ALL BE SORRY!!!"? Did girls in ancient Greece shriek at other girls in the street for having a black-figure vase decorated with spoilers for the next episode of The Iliad?

Wank on both sides, here, but really - if you're too dumb to scan a rather unimaginative network TV show well enough that the boyfriendless chick getting a boyfriend comes as a huge surprise to you, maybe you should stick to picture books.

Personal opinion? There have always been promos and trailers and previews for movies and television shows. But with the internet the ability to seek out information not previously available has become much easier. And so had the ability to post it in a public forum. Because, in many (not all) cases, spoilers come from those who have already read the scripts, read interviews that talk about upcoming shows, gotten inside information from someone working on the show, and occasionally 'know' what is going to happen weeks in advance, it's come to the point where any information about an unaired show is immediately labeled "Spoiler" regardless of its origin. It's become a knee-jerk response, and it's simply a 'fact of life' in a venue where things are posted publicly by such a vast number of people. Those who prefer to be 'unspoiled' can usually find ways to accomplish it.

Your icon amuses me muchly.

And I was listening to Margaret Cho's Revolution CD while stuck in glorious rush hour traffic this morning, so now your icon reminds me of her bit about Hello Kitty:

Maybe instead of "spoiler" we should have a different term for readily-available promotional information released by producers of a film or television series which invariably causes shrieks of dismay in obsessed fans.

Any suggestions?

I don't think that would help, because even if the info isn't real it can still suck all the joy out of watching the actual movie/episode for the true spoilerphobe. They're very sensitive, you know. (Like The Princess and the Pea sensitive.)

The trouble with that is, it ignites my evil urge to mess with them by faking spoilers.

Must.
Resist.
Urge.

Honestly. The only time I've ever been annoyed by an online spoiler was when some git told me the ending of The Sixth Sense in a completely unrelated forum. But then, maybe I'm just not obsessed enough.

Wow. Never thought I'd say that.

I have an idea: JUST DON'T GO TO THE DAMN COMMUNITY ANYMORE, Heather.

Whether the spoiler-posting girl was being malicious doesn't concern me. I, personally, think that some TV spots give too much of the plot away. A few weeks ago, there was a Law and Order: Criminal Intent episode in which the lead character was slapped by a suspect. This scene was used over and over in the preview, only it didn't occur until the end of the episode, meaning that the lead-up to it was mostly ineffective and the slap almost anti-climatic ("Oh. Finally."). I try to avoid watching TV spots for episodes, because I find that they make the episode a little less interesting. But that's my choice, and only mine, so if someone wants to talk about the preview spot online, I think he should. It just means that I tend to avoid those communities until after the episode's aired.

Because OH MY GOD. Not spending every waking moment debating the hairs on So Hawt! actor's head won't kill you! You'll live. Promise.

Being surprised/horrified to stumble across a spoiler on 'net sites dedicated to the shows you watch is like swimming in the ocean and being shocked, just SHOCKED to see a fish.

I mean, duh. Get offline until your show is in reruns then.

Sometimes spoilers irritate me, but they're a fact of life in fandom. When the fifth Harry Potter book came out, I didn't even turn on the computer until I'd finished it (got it at midnight and finished about six hours later, so it wasn't that long for me, but still). I mean, if you're that anal about being spoiled, why tempt fate?

The fun part seems to be that heather_nicole was already spoiled, because she seeks out spoilers on the net. Of course, nadien is at least as bad, if she really posted those "comments" to heather_nicole's LJ - those are big spoilers, all right. Of course, we don't know if she did, since the LJ is friends-only and she deleted them anyway.
By now, nadien seems to be up in arms, insulting people left and right, and she wasn't even the one who posted the spoiler! The OP put it under a cut-tag and apologized. This thread really is a beautiful thing.

I'm a complete and total spoiler whore. Therefore I have no sympathy.

That said, I had friends in the Buffy fandom (okay, actually I knew them from Xena fandom but I got them ADDICTED TO BUFFY MWAHAHAHAHAHA *cough*) who didn't want to be spoiled, especially for the second half of the last season. (They, like me, are in the insane fucked-up minority that actually really liked it.) They were pretty adamant about being spoiler-free -- so they just went no-mail on all their Buffy-related lists, stayed out of our AIM chat room whenever there was Buffy talk going on (the rest of us were really good about not spoiling, though), dove out of the room if there was a promo on the TV, and didn't check the message boards. It was not that much of a deal.

Honestly . . . if you're that vehement about not being spoiled, it's really not that hard to avoid 'em. For TV, anyway -- movie trailers are evil that way, and a whole different can o'worms.

Unless you just want to be a drama whore, and pitch a spoiler hissy fit.

This takes me back to the time before RotK came out and people were yelling because of pictures being posted on LJs. And yes, anti-spoiler people get on my nerves. They're going to get even worse with more and more pictures showing up around the net for the next HP movie. (Beyond the fact of course that they COULD READ THE DAMN BOOK!) The littlest of things will set them off. Like in the next HP movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there's going to be a prisoner and I hear that Harry Potter will be in the movie. OH NO I SPOILED IT OOPS!

I got chewed out on a message board for simply stating that Saruman and Wormtongue had been cut from ROTK. I didn't say, "Oh, no, now we'll never get to see Gimli pack them in a crate and light them on fire," or "Gee, I wish we'd gotten to see Treebeard drown them out in the back." All I said was, basically, what you saw in the second movie was all you were gonna get. AHHHH! SPOILER!! WICKED!! TRICKSY!! FALSE!!1!!11one!

And when they do that, baby Frodo cries.
