Urban Dictionary wank! W00t.

What starts as a rather derogatory description of wanna-be Japanese people turns into a dual of definitions. It's rather funny, really. I posted it here because some of the wankiest comments are from the anime fans. It's great.

no-wonder the world hate amercians, seeing as they have closed thier tiny minds to the world & can't acept anything thats even slightly different to whats "normal" over there...ive been to japan and lived there for about 10 years before deciding to move back to amercia...but i came back to a load of shitheads who cant aceppt change.

I think the poster is so much more credible because hesheit lived in japan before moving to amercia. Don't you?

(Amercia, amercia, lnad of the feer, hemo of the braev!)

Someone (I don't remember whom, and therefore I am a Bad Person) once wrote that a truly inclusive pronoun would be the abbreviated form of 'he or she, it':

h'or'sh'it.

Quite possibly offensive to the truly generously inclusive and also to those of us with gender issues; however, it still made Dr Pepper come out my nose.

*snorts, gets Mountain Dew up nose* No, actually it's particularly funny to people with gender issues, because we have to witness the gender-neutral-pronoun wankery on a regular basis. I'll have to remember that...

but I do agree-- the gender neutral debate can get very wanky, and that inclusive pronouns is very funny... It's tempting to try to work it into one of my next assignments, but this term I don't think I have professors that would appreciate it...

Well I never considered it 'cheating' because it was pretty obvious that Yuki wasn't going to marry her, and that the engagement was their parents idea not their's.

I mean if he had actually proposed to her then yeah I'd think he was a jackass.

[She irked me due to her whole 'Hi we've never actually met but I love you because my parents told me to' shitck.]

Meh, if he were doing internet research, it'd be a great place to sample (ie internet subcultures). But the whole using a stereotype as an acceptable characterization of a group bit utterly destroyed my suspension of disbelief for the "social scientist" claim.

CJ,

Re: Quote from the original definition:

Actually, that's why I asked. 8) I know a lot of the psych takes on stuff, but I know very little about the sociological take. Personally (as a semi-psychologist) I like to know as many different takes on people's mental health as possible; first of all it keeps one from getting stuck within a paradym that doesn't always workd, and second of all it;s interesting! So if you know of any good books on the sociological impact of forensic/criminal matters, I'd love to know what they are!

My area really doesn't touch on indivduals that much. If you want to check out some soci text, I'll suggest:

The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience.
Francisco J. Varela, Evan Thompson, and Eleanor Rosch
Cambridge: MIT Press. 1993.

The Physics of Consciousness: Quantum Minds and the Meaning of Life
Evan Harris Walker. Cambridge: Perseus Press. 2000.

Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying: An Exploration of Consciousness with the Dalai Lama. Francisco J. Varela (Ed.). Boston: Wisdom Publications. 1997.

Hope it helps!

Hm. Excuse an annonymous poster for butting in here, but isn't the original post pretty wanky in itself? Several of the traits he lists aren't even exclusively connected to anime: Being a virgin? Collecting swords? I mean, what do those have to do with anything? I'd like to see him back up that assertion that anime refers to "shallow, saccharine and intellectually insulting animation shows", too.

Not like he ever will, though.

I've never heard of this term. Must be an American thing (he he).
I like the definition concerning the term otaku. Had a long discussion at dinner last night about this term, and a table of 8 of us (2 japanese, the rest of us japanese speakers to one degree or other) finally settled on the definition of "obsessed idiot nerd".

I think my eyes were playing ping-pong on the last couple pages there with all the ohsosubtle arguments between the contributors... thus, we finally get a dictionary definiton for 'wapanese:'

wapanese: adj. 1. Those stupid, wannabe, dorky fags, including but not limited to anyone enrolled in a Japanese class, anyone who has ever had even a passing interest in anime, and anyone who has ever admitted that any part of Japanese culture is "cool." 2. Those stupid, dorky, fat wannabe-Japanese people who give all anime a bad name because obviously the writer of this definition isn't as obsessed as they are. 3. A term invented by the mindless, prejudiced voids of society to impose caste-like social outcast status on us, the noble devotees of Japanese culture.

... think it'll make the Oxford English dictionary?

Urban Dictionary is great for so many wanks. Like...

"Fanboy: Stupid 10-15 year old males who use AOL and worship one particular game system.
They are one of two (or both) things:
1. Too poor to own all 3 major gaming systems, so bashes the other 2 to make himself feel better.
2. Incredibly insecure and pathetic as the only thing he has to stand up for is what video game system he prefers.

My only personal bias is against the PS2's shitty hardware that lacks anti-aliasing and also constantly breaks. This is unfortunate as some of the best games out there are on it.

Fanboys are annoying and ignorant"
