Deathmarch Deathmarch
The Deathmarch (Now at Round LVII.) Years of vicious fighting between supporters of Ron/Hermione and Harry/Hermione. Reliable producer of wank. Now to come to an end?

Well, not before we get some more wank out of it.

Fiction Alley in its infinite wisdom established two threads to collect all anti-ship venom: Can't Stand R/Hr?(Now in Round IV and Can't Stand H/Hr? (Now in Round XV)Threads are, as expected, fairly venomous.

A Deathmarch regular by the name of Kia is upset with this and begins A Petition for the removal of the Can't Stand threads.

Highlights of the first post

The Can't Stand threads also poison the relations between the ships on FAP and "abroad". The inter-ship bashing and flaming has increased since they were introduced one and a half year ago. Nowadays you can find public LJ entries and message boards devoted to the cause of bashing a group of people or even individuals by name, because of their ship affiliation.

There being no ship wars in Harry Potter land before a year and a half ago, right?

I am sorry for quoting exclusively from the Can't Stand H/H thread, but as it is the fastest and most recent Can't Stand thread, it seemed rather representative of the CS threads' nature.

This despite the fact that Kia is one of the most active H/Hers on the Deathmarch. Yeah, we believe you.

Of course, she may have a point. Surely, this is enough to hurt anyone's feelings.

I CAN'T STAND HARRY/HERMIONE!!! MURDERERS!!! KILLING CANON HARRY AND HERMIONE!!! BASHING RON!!!

A few minutes later, in a completely unrelated turn of events, Barbiefen posts Petition for the closing of the Debate Thread.

The arena is ready, the combatants line up to fight, and much wank ensues.

Highlights of the First Petition

Sarmi brings up more evidence of R/Hers' inherent evilness.

I would like to point out though, that the Thread that was unfortunately used is on it's 15th incarnation, while the other threads have just begun, or on their 4th.

Ravenclawed virtually sticks out her tongue at the H/Hers.

And what’s even more amusing is the people who are trying to get the threads closed down. Hee! But yeah, it has absolutely nothing to do with shipper-bias whatsoever. Ya'll are merely looking out for the well-being of the board. Right.

Falcon, H/Hr, weighs in:

On the DT, an R/Hr says that they see where you're coming from, and they understand how you can see something a certain way, then the next thing you know, that same R/Hr is on the CSH/HR thread making fun of your arguments. This is highly disrespectful, because as H/Hr's we are not allowed to defend ourselves in that thread. This is tantamount to hiding behing your momma and giving some other kid the finger.....

I know that I have intentionally been rude or sarcastic or mean because of something an R/Hr said in the Can't Stand H/Hr thread.

Ehawee21 writes back:
And other times, I'm sure you're rude, sarcastic, and mean "just because". In the past, you've taken pride in, and admitted to trying to piss the other side of the debate off just for the hell of it.

Falcon retorts:
Whoa! Just back your cart up there. I never said that it was THE reason, I said that I have done so in the past because of something I saw there. Now, this is not the place to discuss this. If you wanna go a few rounds with me, then owl me, otherwise...

A lot of y'all R/Hrs are saying that the CS thread is the only place you have to vent. Bull, there are LJ communities devoted to this. The CS threads are just a way for you to make fun of someone that ain't allowed to defend themselves. I've taken the fight to the CS threads before, because what was said there was worse than what was being said on the DT.

HarryNZ helpfully adds:
The CS threads are the some of the worst for inciting hatred and discord, next to maybe only the DT, and as an example of what is acceptable, and what is not, it should be deemed necessary that they be closed.

Censorship is brought in. Who is quoted? The Declaration of Independence? Nope. Michael Douglas.

Gily Ann:
I'm a firm believer in that part of The American President when Michael Douglas says that ' America isn't easy, you have to be willing to let someone rant about something at the tops of their lungs what you would spent oposing a lifetime at the top of yours'

Personaly, I admire F.A. because in here people can discuss whatever they wish. Even if I don't agree with Slash or incest it doesn't mean that other people can't like it. To each it's own. I mind my business, I don't bother them and I certainly don't go to their threads. That would be an unnecessary rise of blood presure.

Ship bashing is hate-speech!

Kia writes:
The ToU state that flames are "any post containing clearly malicious or defamatory statements aimed toward other individuals, whether singly or as members of any group."

Does the statement "X/Y shippers suck" fall into this category? People, individuals would be bashed as "members of a group" in this case after all.

Kia aims at the FA moderators with a chilling prediction of the future.
Yeah, you look for fights within the group and miss the fights that are directed outside the nice little fortress, people have in these threads. I never read the CS H/G thread, but if someone mentions "Ginny the cat animagus", then let me tell you that this is aimed at specific shipper, who used to post that over at COSforums. You didn't know? Yeah, that's is what makes the CS threads so difficult. That is why you would ignore a complaint about Ginny the cat animagus. You wouldn't, couldn't know about this specific argument and its poster. You'd ignore a rightful complaint.

Which complaint you'll miss tomorrow?

and then

Frankly, I consider you trying to police my emotional reaction or the places I visit on FAP in order to guarantee people's right to potentially flame and spam, much more a violation of my freedom, than the removal of one or two thread, where I can spam.

and

What is taking things too far then? Is there anything left to take things to when insulting a group of people? What comes next? Being rapists? Canon rapists? But then of course, no one would get upset about this either.... or they would have to be stupid to be upset.

One accused flamer Black Cherry begs for an end to this.
Isn't it about time we dropped this whole stupid thing? Incase you hadn't gone
back to the CSHHr thread, there was an apology posted and a point lost.

Kia is forgiving
I don't think you are a bad person for it or whatever, I
think your comment was the pure product of your environment.

Preety Veela weighs in
If you had time to copy, paste, quote, and type your reason for the removal of the threads, then you should have taken time to get posts from both sides. This thread was your time to show that you were looking past being a shipper, and were posting as Harry Potter fan that was concerned for the welfare of all ships.

Am I as a Good Shipper supossed to believe that you have good intentions, when you conveniently leave out posts from your own side(including posts from yourself) but took time out to copy and paste from our thread? If you are going to take a stance for the good of both sides, then present all facts, not just one side and count it as "speaking for both sides". You are not speaking for me or my ship when you do that, even if you're intentions are meant to be good for both ships. You have to show it, not just type it.

Kia is offended
Thanks for making the discussion once more about me, instead of the threads in question. Thanks for implying that I am the only who is for the removal of the CS threads.

Highlights of the Petition against the Deathmarch

Barbiefen (They're killing the canon!):
Over the course of time posters of that thread from both sides have engaged in an ruthless battle of who is better than who. They deconstruct cannon to the point is irrecognizable.

This battles of ship have become personal and to the point of ridiculization. It is because of that there are so many Can't stand Threads. People have become so engaged in this battle that it isn't any longer about exploring other peoples point of views is about winning and about who much I can damage you and your ship.

This thread does nothing good for the fannon and specially to the master piece that JKR has created.

Terrible crimes, according to Barbiefen, include:
Among to other thins are theories of Ron being abuser, Harry being an abuser, Ginny slut and Hermione the cold bloded person.

Shipping Wars are a world problem.
I don't care who ends with who but glancing at that thread has made me wish that neither H/Hr or R/Hr happens in the books. I really do hope that neither of the ships on that thread happens. That will make the posters sank in the reality and make them next time around learn to enjoy literature and not make it another problem to the ones that we have in the world.

Kia takes offense at having the Deathmarch taken away and asks
Anyway, could you explain to me how the DT is a violation of the ToU?

Barbiefen replies:
It isn't about violating the ToU is about you guys (and mean all of you debaters of that thread) destroying cannon and make a mockery out of JKR work.

and

The debaters of that thread deconstruct cannon to the point that it sounds as if you are debating a different book and that is both sides!

Forgive me father for I have sinned. I am an English major.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who wants Hermione to get together with Viktor Krum (or, well, anyone who isn't Ron, Harry or Draco) just to shut these people up.

Oh no, I'm with you on that.

To shut them up, to stick a pin in the notion that you MUST MUST MUST date from an extremely small pool of fellow major characters extremely close friends, and basically just... yeah.

Hell, thinking of the people I hung around with at the Trio's age... I haven't seen 90% of them in going on ten years now. Of course, that's real life and this is fiction, but I'm overall sick of that whole "omg true love from diapers onward" mindset.

The problem with Harry Potter fandom is that there is almost no ship you can find that someone hasn't done. Unless JKR pulls out a completely random person in the last word of the final novel. That would do it.

I personally ship Hermione/Miranda Goshawk. Theirloveissocompletelyunexpected!

I've been watching this wank for the past few days since it began. Actually, I was thinking of posting this to F_W, but wasn't sure if it was wanky enough.

My favorite bits of the wank was when Tybalt_Quin was very logically trying to point out the flaws in Kia's petition, and Kia kept getting more and more wanky with each post she made in reply. I also liked how all of the H/Hr shippers were quick to support the closing of the can't stand threads, yet balked at the idea of the DT being closed. I mean really, it's not like the DT will change anyone's mind about ships. I imagine some will still be arguing after the last book has been printed claiming that JKR was wrong and Hermione/whomever broke up soon after the end and married the other character.

Actually the whole bit is crazy. Get rid of the threads, they will spill over into others, because we all know that the World will end if H/Hr shippers and R/Hr shippers ever agree on anything in canon. And of course keeping them, means more wank produced by both sides in my opinion.

Yes, that thread gets wankier and wankier, I like the "it's a pretty stupid thing to get upset about" "And now you're accusing me of being stupid and trying to police were I go!!!" exchange.

I must say however, that the "Can't stand-threads" are pretty wanky themselves. Comments like:
"Oh, I bet when X/X-ship sails, the X/Y-shippers will STILL be writing X/Y-fanfics!"
(Like, oh, perish the thought!)
and:
"I almost smacked a girl today, because she said she liked X/X!"
and last but not least:
"Clives/Cuaron/Columbus is BIASED, he clearly ships [insert ship]!"
...never fail to amuse me.

http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53105

Unfortunately, it was taken down, but for about a minute there, I thought it was going to lead to a new craze of anti-Can't Stand threads, which would of course could lead to anti-anti-Can't Stand Threads, and continue into infinity ad nauseum.

Frankly, the DT gives me a headache, and the actions by everyone at the Trio board offend me. So you know what I do? I avoid it. I keep to SCUSA, the Cookie Jar, and the fic archives. Occasionally, I go looking for something from the Nifflers when I'm in a mood for something different.

Frankly, I think both sides in this debate have merit. However, actually arguing the point seems to be a waste of time. But some people need a hobby, and scouring these books for any subtext (or just plain crackpot theories) on their chosen side is what they do to kill time. Would I take it away from them? Only if the bashing starts to spill over onto the SCUSA threads again (as it has already happened: the HMS Pumpkin Pie's second thread was closed prematurely due to an idiot who believed that every person on that thread should be seriously chewed out for not shipping R/Hr--the person was subsequently banned). I don't care who fires the first shot. Leave me alone (unless you're asking for fic recs), and I'll leave you alone (unless I need fic recs).

Besides, the DT is important for two very important reasons: it teaches us that some people care way too much about pointless things, and it provides us with precious, high-quality, white, vegan splooge.

"That will make the posters sank in the reality and make them next time around learn to enjoy literature and not make it another problem to the ones that we have in the world."

Oh! How I remember those wretched 'shipping wars of years past... I lost a leg in the Frodo/Sam Rebellion of '99.

... It got better.

I object to the use of 'canon rapist' in their case; that term should be reserved for those of us who ship Hermione/Hogwarts, A History. And Harry/Ginny/Padfoot. And Umbridge/Ron.

They deconstruct cannon to the point is irrecognizable.

This battles of ship have become personal and to the point of ridiculization.

Dude, I just spent an hour on a Babelfish-translated Japanese fanart site, and it was more coherent than this bit right here.

Can't they see they're both wrong?
Although the 'terrible crimes'
"Among to other things are theories of Ron being abuser, Harry being an abuser, Ginny slut and Hermione the cold bloded person"
all have some canon back up, post OotP; as much as any theories.
I myself am now shipping Draco/Frank Bryce.

You know, I thought one of the acts of pure good a community designed for pointing and laughing actually achieved was changing that thread name. Way back on the LJ incarnation of f-W, [info]calanthe_b pointing out that the name Deathmarch for a *shipping thread* was horrendously tasteless and offensive to those of us whsoe family members were tortured and died on the Deathmarch... and the name was changed in response.

Don't tell me it's been changed back.

FAP wank is like IMDb wank, there is too much of it. Someone should write crossover.
