I am not your Mommy!
And it's a good thing too, cause I'd hurt myself.

Mami. Got that? Mami. Not Mommy.

I can deal with being freaked before she knew the difference. But what seems really wanky here is it was explained to her and she's still saying it's 'mommy' and how men better not call her that.

Cultural diversity, it's a wonderful thing. Really.

BTW, did any of you know chick is another word for baby chickens? Next time some guy calls me a chick, I'm gonna punch his lights out for insinuating I'm poultry.

edit Very loosely fandom, but as long as JC and Britney are mentioned, I'm going with it!

edited to add--and it's different when you actually have kids together!

Since when could you edit comments?

See, I could use that to go back and edit it so my HTML tag actually works and I'm not embarassing myself in front of a community of other nerds.

I think she meant what I (and some others I seen) do sometimes, which is, if there's a horrific spaelign or HTML mistake then I'll delete the comment and repost it the correct way.

Aw, Mami, why you tryin' to bring that foreign talk to her whitebread world? You know she can't cope with anything more latin-sounding than "Chasez".

mmmmm, whitebread. Tastes best with a generous layer of wank.

Hee! And I think the Chasez is actually french.

The assumption that all these guys don't know exactly what they are saying is really quite ridiculous. Also, the refusal to get the fuck over the fact that she misunderstands the word. If I thought a word meant chair and then was told it didn't, I wouldn't continue to say "Well, it still means CHAIR to me!!!"

It is, which is why it's funny when magazines come up with "Chavez" instead.

Damn furriners and their funny names. Why can't they get real names like Smith and Jones?

[This from a woman who how many freaking years later continues to read Fatone as Fat-one and not Fa-tone. So sad.]

I don't think he's overweight at all -- he's in fantastic shape and he really gives 200% at every concert, and man, did he look *GOOD* during RENT... ahem. Not that I'm biased or anything.

It is French, but French is also a Latin derivative. ;)

(Let's not talk about how my Australian child-self was deeply confused at the ubiquity of what I thought were ancient Romans in American cop shows. I thought that was what Latin meant! They were the people who spoke Latin, right?)

It's Southern French, and there are a lot of Spaniards with that last name, so, y'know, JC's Latin in there somewhere...

That said, I'm Latina, and "Mami" DOES mean "mommy". I call my mother "Mami" and my 5 year old son calls me that. But both men and women call other women "Mami" as a term of endearment, though (and women will often call men and boys not their father "Papi"). But it's not some weird Oedipal thing. It's just like saying "baby". You're not saying that the person is actually a baby. For pete's sake!

Still, if a word has two meanings, you're going to have to accept that it's gonna be taken as the one in the language you're speaking. I'm certainly gonna point and laugh at any North American I meet at school tomorrow who tells me how they root for their team, even though I understand, because that sure isn't what root means in these parts. ;)

It's just a generic 'sex' word, whatever kind's appropriate to the occasion. If you're being specific about the anal part, it's bugger. *g*

My problem is it's not even the same word! Yes, they sound alike, but it doesn't mean that just cause she hears 'mommy' that it's not still 'mami' and perfectly valid for the speaker to say.

My wrist hurts. Stupid wanking.

Heh. Back when I was in Blake's 7 fandom... yes grandmother... a constant thread was that Gan, no matter how much he pretended to be all big and cuddly and lovable, was actually a sexist opressor and probably a psychopathic serial killer because he refereed to his life partener as his "woman."

Guess I should be worried when my wife refers to me as her baby girl, then...

Imagine the chaos if we could edit comments. Oh god, I would so start fights just so I could go back and replace all my bitchy comments with "But you're so talented!" and "I thought you liked me!" Then I'd run back to my journal and sob about how people hated me. hehehehe

Conversely, I never liked it when actresses like Marilyn Monroe called their male protagonists, "Daddy," either. Seriously smacks of incest and pedaphelia.

Right. Because anyone who uses such a term of endearment is obviously so insane that they believe their lovers are actually their parents.
