It's Southern French, and there are a lot of Spaniards with that last name, so, y'know, JC's Latin in there somewhere...

That said, I'm Latina, and "Mami" DOES mean "mommy". I call my mother "Mami" and my 5 year old son calls me that. But both men and women call other women "Mami" as a term of endearment, though (and women will often call men and boys not their father "Papi"). But it's not some weird Oedipal thing. It's just like saying "baby". You're not saying that the person is actually a baby. For pete's sake!

	Still, if a word has two meanings, you're going to have to accept that it's gonna be taken as the one in the language you're speaking.
