You're all nerds, you nerds!
I don't have very good wankdar, but every so often something on friendsfriends makes me go WTF. And this is one of those times. I know no backstory, and YMMV.

Anime conventions. Lots of people wandering around spending loads of money on their beloved, insanely overpriced hobby. After the day's festivities are done, the crowd breaks up and everyone does their own thing until the next day, and this is where our stage is set.

Some people (cough) are slaves to our circadian rhythms and sleep from midnight to eight. Some of the truly broke and/or hardcore never leave the convention for all 72-odd hours. Some people gather in hotel rooms to chat, or gloat over their new purchases. And some people gather to get smashed, in the grand tradition of parties everywhere.

You'd think that whatever a person wants to do after hours is their own business, right?

...right?

Apparently not. (Involved section is the last part of the OP, where the big paragraph begins.)

Theorized here:
- Getting drunk is the only acceptable way to spend one's time after a con.

- Watching TV makes you a loser. ...even though this is an anime convention, dedicated to television shows and movies. Um...

- Judging people for gathering and doing other things is good (you suck because your fun is different from my fun!), but judging people for drinking is wrong.

- Party people are the only ones who care about other human beings and are the only ones in tune with the cosmos and enlightenment itself.

Ohhhhkay then, so much for different strokes for different folks.

[Afterthought: I thiiiiink the OP may be an animator, which adds an extra flavor of the PTBs bitching out the fans - but regardless, I am baffled.]

True. This is all I've got on that front lately (and it's mostly more caminante noise).

I mod the cosplay comm over on LJ, and make a point of crushing anything that could start a flame war, even if it's PC, because when those bastards get going, they just do NOT shut up. EVER. I don't know how Kyle and Sarah handle Cosplay.com, yeesh.

Hey, after AnimeBoston, I skipped out and went to a pretty kickass White Stripes concert.

Does this make me a huge loser or regain some of the coolness points I lost by working AnimeBoston?

Working Anime Boston is one thing. Cosplaying at it is quite another.

And participating in a cosplay contest there... well, that's just beyond the pale, negative-coolness-points-wise.

In short: don't worry, you're still cool. :)

Because yeah, the only way to know if you're having a good time is to be too smashed to remember it. True happiness depends on mass quantities of alcohol. I guess since I don't like the taste of ethanol and therefore don't drink alcohol very often, I must be the queen of all prudes. *sigh*

I don't understand people who get wasted at SF cons--well, I understand them getting drunk, but from the point of view of the people running the thing, drunk fans are the suck because the hotel doesn't like it very much when they misbehave. Neither do the alcohol-free fans who really don't like it when people act rowdy and they're not on the designated party floor, if the con hotel has such a thing.

Then again, there is that whole culture of people who go to cons to meet other fans and not to, well, enjoy the topic of the cons. That whole "fan of fandom" thing. (That's one expensive meetup, y0.) The person in the OP sounds like one of those.

I have no problem with people getting drunk at cons.. but I really wish they'd do it outside of the public con area, because they're ANIME CONS and as such, like 50% of the attendees are jr. highers who reeeaaaally don't need to see that. It's like, okay, yeah, you're a nerd AND you can party, that's great, how about you put your pants back on and go back to your hotel room?

Ah, Jan. I love her. Partied with her a couple of times at ACen. (Much love to the Big Fire crew.) She's actually a great person when you get a chance to meet her. She has been an animator, a producer, and a director.

*glances down*

Amanda Winn Lee? Ah. That explains it all. She's notorious for getting blitzed and then doing exceptionally...wild...stuff while blitzed, according to my husband, who hosted a costume contest where the climax of the evening was Amanda (who was judging) getting up on stage, peeling off her top, and freak dancing with a giant penguin.

I've never been to an anime con, but I did go to two furry cons back in 2000 (don't laugh), and it was actually pretty fun, even without going to the Dead Dogs or the other drunkfests. If the only way to spend your time after a con is to get soused up, then either the con must not have been very entertaining (if you're a staff member, I'd say you're forgiven though ^_^), or you've got a drinking problem. :P

And one more thing:

- Party people are the only ones who care about other human beings and are the only ones in tune with the cosmos and enlightenment itself.

*PEACE*LOVE*UNITY*WANK*!!!

Gaaah, drunks at cons. I guess they *must* find it fun, but most of the rest of us sure as hell don't, especially when they involve us in thier antics. The entire hotel at Akon last year was emptied at three in the morning over a fire alarm scare. Why? Because the smashed frat boys next door wanted to see my roomate's cute ass and couldn't get us to open the door earlier...so they decided to get her to come out by pulling the fire alarm. I wish I'd have realized who had done it when it happened...I'd have sicced all those poor people who had to trudge down many many stairs (no elevators allowed during potential fires) in thier nightclothes on them. Damn drunken hormone farms. If they just come to get so plastered they don't remember anything anyway, why don't they stay HOME and get drunk so we're not a part of thier amusements?
