Apparently, [info]fandom_wank is full of insecure "miidel schoolers" who are in way over their heads, because they cannot accept that if you just ignore the cockroaches, then they will all magically disappear. Pest control was never so easy! Of course, I would be less mortified for her if she herself was only fourteen years old... For someone who contends that age equals status and brains, one has to wonder what she's doing writing kiddie porn for cartoons and children's books.

So, according to one of the commenters, there is something wrong with writing fanfiction at the age of "nearly forty." Hmm, wonder what he/she/it thinks about those of us who are over 40 and still writing fanfiction.

I think that she was referring to the quality of the fics more than the fact that they're being written at that age. If I wrote like that at forty, I'd like to be shot with a potato gun.

I feel like we should have a form letter we send out to people who get wanked. Here's a draft. I invite people to run with this pair of scissors joke:

Dear _________ (your username/nick/comm name here),

Congratulations! You have been written up on fandom_wank. In order to get the most out of this thrilling occurrence, please bear the following points in mind:

1. Although grudge wanks happen, chances are very good that you did not offend or annoy the person who wrote you up. Almost all of the people involved with fandom_wank are in it for the amusement factor.

2. Don't bother to tell us we're just like the mean girls in school/the nazis/the terrorists. We've heard it before and we will just laugh at you.

3. If you and you friend/sock/minion/sister (posting because you're too ill/distraught/dead to post and it's all our fault) comes over and posts in your defense, we will just laugh at you more.

4. If you come over and ask how we'd feel if this happened to us or our friends, bear in mind that we eat our own, spit out the bones and move on. In other words, several of us have been wanked by the very community they belong to.

5. If for some reason you are able to come over and laugh at yourself, we'll still laugh but we'll be laughing with you. And who knows, you might make some friends.

6. There is no point six.

7. If you come over and look at the post and see that it has two pages of comments numbering in the 100s, don't let it go to your head. The chances are good that most of those comments are in-jokes or GIPs and have nothing to do with you.

8. Finally in spite of the signature on this letter, we do not all participate in fandom_wank for the same reasons. Trying to assign one motive to a group of over 1000 people isn't just silly, it's wanky.

Or they just don't like your fics and some honestly want to help you become better. People have these things called "opinions", dear, and they'll express them from time to time. You're also free to ignore them, like you're advocating to people who don't like your fics. Just so you know.

Sheesh. I'm reminded of the Mary Sue authors that merrily proclaim they violate canon and then yell at people who don't like it. Same thing, really, only without Serenity Glitterfairy McHoneyflower turning into a unicorn and seducing Snape.

What amuses me is her referral to BNFs as her betas. If it has their stamp of approval, she can't be all that bad .

You can put a piece of fiction through any number of good editors - I guarantee that you will still find something that can be improved upon. Writing (and improving one's writing) is a never-ending process.
