I like making icons, but I don't get why folks make big flipping deals about them.

So this struck me as a tad Of Teh Wank.

That line had me giggling madly.

ICONS = BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS!

Blood, sweat and tears, people! Don't you ever forget it!

Is it wrong that I want to get a picture of say, Harmony and request they make an icon with a phrase pokeing at their elitist asshat bitching?

There are finite pics, fonts, styles, techniques get over it.

I love "you need to grow too" like icons are high art. Oh sure some are purdy but bitch please!

Thanks for posting that! I needed a good grrr.

I'm still iconing like it's 2001 here. :)

But, dude, on those icon requests? If the requester is supplying the cap and the quote, why the limitation on the series that the iconist will make icons for? It's not like there's going to be much thinking involved on the icon making...

Ya know, I can crop and slap some text on a picture using the software that came with my cheapo printer, and lord knows I'm no arteest. If the requester is supplying the cap and the quote, why don't they make their own silly icons? Just wondering.

Not to mention that, after you spend all the time posting the screencap, getting a source for the quote, and all that, you don't even get the icon to yourself -- anyone can have it.

Well, if you go crazy with effects it can still take some time. It depends on how much time and effort she wants to spend on these requests. If it's only cropping and putting the text on it, it's only a matter of minutes, but otherwise...

"And I really don't copy anyone's style, with the exception of using the colored bars beneath text sometimes since it helps when the text wouldn't stand out against the picture."

That's copying style? Funny, here I thought it was common sense. Shows what I know, don't it?

Gaah. Icons are fun and all, but it's not like they're an art form... Now, I understand if someone gets pissed when someone else steals an icon they spent a long time working with, but I just don't get the whining about styles. I really doubt the whiner has come up with all her ideas by herself, without getting any inspiration from others. Then again, maybe it's okay for her to use others' ideas, although it's not okay for others to do so...

"Oh great and wise 'trailblazers' of icon making, as I am knew to this 'art form' I beg you to teach me all of your knowledge so that I may 'grow' in form and style!"

Icon making an 'art form'?

Sculpture is an art form. Painting, also an art form. Heck even sarcasm can be considered and art form.

But icon making?

Ooh, please allow me to insert my own whining here. Fab.

Stop using the Scriptina font, people! Agggh! I was using it before it was even popular and now it's so 2003! Whine, whine, whine, get-another-font-cakes.

*phew*

So hard being a trendsetter. Heh.

Anyhow, I love making icons and I enjoy testing out new PS ideas on them all the time. I even respect saava, dtissagirl, and quebelly because their tips and tutorials have helped me. But I also don't spend an hour or more making an icon by following steps that will make my icon look like all the others. I just want pretty icons! Is that so wrong? *weeps*

Right. Replying to ancient thread like a bastard.

Could the reason for this repetition be the fact that they all only have three sad litle concepts between them? No matter how much frippery you put on an icon, it's not going to stop being banal. It's going to be banal in a slightly poncier way. Indeed something to strive for...
