This is not Hollywood.
4Kids Entertainment licenses "Tokyo Mew Mew", and discusses some of the changes here. One of which is that the show will be renamed "Hollywood Mew Mew", and will have its locale "changed" accordingly.

Hilarity ensues.

There are some attempts on both boards at some perspective, but remember this: "Once Anime has reached the point where it is no longer an art form but rather a product, [They] will no longer consider it [their] hobby."

... Okay!

... You're kidding, right? This is a joke. They're not actually going to change it to "Hollywood Mew Mew", right?
... Oh dear god, what the hell?! o.O I mean... WHY?! What is WRONG with Tokyo? I mean, I already had no idea why they were so desperate to avoid placing "Card Captors" in Tokyo, or even in Japan, but...
*head implodes*

Well, you can't have kids getting them FOREIGN ideas into their heads. Else they'll grow up to be seaweed-eating hippies.

With a name like 4Kids Entertainment, the last thing they should license is anything anime, IMO. But that's just me. Obviously we have a case of trying to mass market, but instead of either teaching the mass stupidity this society that ::gasp:: there are other places in the world outside of us, they figure they can hit a bigger market by catering to the self-absorbed brain-deprived U.S. audience.

I'm sad to be an American. But I know no other country would want me with that taint.

Ahaha. So you think NO anime is aimed at kids? I'm sorry, last I checked Pokemon was not a dark and angsty exploration of the dark side of the sex trade.

There is anime for children. YES, FANLET, FACE IT. THERE IS ANIME FOR CHILDREN.

Not ALL anime is for children, but shrieking that OMG ANIME IS NEVER FOR CHILDREN is, well, stupid and completely inaccurate. If you think you're going to gain respect for the medium with this kneejerk backlash, well, please be quiet. We don't need "help" like that.

...I just want to say to dawnswalker that your choice of music is a nice touch given the wank.

As for 4Kids, maybe if we're lucky they're rechange the theme song to Red Hot Chilli Pepper's "Californication." It's fitting at least.

4Kids is probably the *strangest* dubbing company there is. They take out perfectly innocent scenes, leave in *insanely* suggestive stuff...and *ADD* suggestive stuff to boot!

They *do* get very good VAs though.

I think they're on crack. But then, my main fandom is Pokemon, where it's fairly obvious that the original writers/producers/etc are *also* on crack. They're just on different *kinds* of crack, which is why we have the differences.

I know. I'm just boggling over this. They leave some really disturbing/violent stuff in Yu-Gi-Oh, edit out other stuff, but generally they leave some of the darkest stuff right in there. (Personally, I think having your soul sent to a realm of eternal darkness is scarier than getting your legs cut off.)
And then they go and do something like THIS. o.O
Have you seen any of the Yu-Gi-Oh DVDs? I haven't yet, so I don't know if they've got the original version on them, or if it's just pure dub, they way they've been doing with Pokemon.

Word. The whole Hollywood thing is pretty inane (And it really DOES come off as being a bit condescending/insulting of the average child's intelligence.), but man, is the wanking (almost) worth it. Okay, I am so sorry but this is me here cackling gleefully and savouring the sweet sweet taste of revenge. *insert cackle*

Since 1989/90 ALL anime on Italian telly had been magically altered to take place in the US and/or Britain. Complete with name changes, eradication of anything japanese and heaps and heaps of relatively mature anime being marketed for children. With ensuing sweeping cuts and editing.

Even series that had aired previously to 1989 were redubbed and re-edited. And nobody has really explained this to nobody's satisfaction. They said children wouldn't be able to pronounce the Japanese names and would get confused, which shows us exactly how much bullshit they can spread since English is so much harder to pronounce. Italian and Japanese use the same syllables. Try asking an Italian babe to say "Charles" and see them struggle (been there, done that, made them cry).

Now, this might be wanky as hell, and I know it's nobody's fault except our own but... HA. And HA again.

(Although it did provide amusement sometimes. Kodocha's Fuuka was aptly renamed Fanny)

@_@
I'm afraid I have to agree with the idea of them changing "Tokyo" to "Hollywood" is freakin' RIDICULOUS.

However, the "OMG WHAT IF THEY FORCE TOKYOPOP TO MAKE IT AMERICAN?!" line was going over the top.

It hurts my head that companies still pull stuff like this - if you look, the most successful anime brought over to the US has been the stuff that's the least tampered with. But, this is a kids show, so there shouldn't be too much of a problem. It worries me when a group of adults freaks out over stuff like Tokyo Mew Mew. I mean, Escaflowne I can sorta understand, since that's aimed at an older crowd... but Tokyo Mew Mew? Yeesh.

I so don't understand the thought processes behind American TV executives:

"This show is really popular in Japan, and all over the world. There's something about it that gives it international success. Therefore...let's change it!"

...eh?

Thank Goodness One Piece hasn't been picked up. Sanji alone would be enough to make their brains explode. He smokes and swears in just about every scene he's in *_*

Though granted, the dubbed FLCL that appeared on CN was really well done. *thumbs up*

Okay, I'll ask:

Am I the only person in the world who thinks this change is entirely, almost ridiculously low-impact?

Admittedly, I haven't seen any Tokyo Mew Mew, but are there any plot developments at all that revolve around it being Tokyo and not Hollywood or London or Perth-Amboy, NJ or whatever? Is this actually going to fundamentally matter to the series? And if not... who cares?

Furthermore, re: the debate about whether anime is generally for children or not -- all the "anime is for adults!" assertions are sort of irrelevant given that Tokyo Mew Mew is demonstrably a children's show, and thus a kids' dubbing company bringing it over is really in no way disrespectful to the initial AAAAART.

I may be able to spread some light on this subject...I've spent more time than is healthy on this anime.

Alright then, I can give you all a bit more info about the difference between the Japanese version and the US version of Yu-Gi-Oh[which happens to be my favorite anime]. I do indeed have the Japanese series box sets in case anyone wonders.

Now...first things first...For about the first season and a half, the US version made HUGE improvements over the Japanese version. The whole Duelist Kingdom saga may have had a tiny bit edited out, but overall the story and character development was done much better. The original lacked a strong villain. Master Pegasus was of course still the villain, but he didn’t have the same effect as he did in the US version. In US version he is deviously calculating, everything that happens is part of how he wants things to come together. Everything falls together as he wants it to. In the original, he isn’t nearly so...I guess the word is bad@$$. He's not as strong a character; this would be the main point of why the US version is more enjoyable than the original.[though not the only one]

After the Duelist Kingdom saga, the US version steadily goes downhill. In the original series, the story and character development really kicks off, as do the darker elements of the series. As for US, they edit out some of the darker type material that's not suitable for young kids, but they also go too far in editing and do a butcher job.

I can give you all a few examples of what I mean, you can judge yourself if you think they're worth editing or not.

Duelist Kingdom Saga
~In the episode where Mai spends the night around the campfire with Yugi and his friends, it goes into a flashback scene of her past. It's about how she used to work in a Casino ship, and was exposed to alot of rich people and how she eventually came to hate them.

~Joey and Tristan try to sneak a peak at Tea as she's in the shower, Yugi has to hold them back

~Guns...When Seto Kaiba is on the computer hacking into the Duelist Kingdom satellite he is interrupted by some of Master Pegasus' thugs. They barge into the room and shoot at him as he jumps out the window.

This also happens again once Seto Kaiba is on the Island, he is ambushed by one of Master Pegasus' guards and has a gun pointed at his temple. This also leads to missing a pretty slick scene as Seto throws a card as the trigger is pulled. The card hits perfectly and stops the hammer from hitting the bullet.
Now how many US cartoons have you seen have guns? How many times have you seen Batman get shot out by tommy guns? How many times have you seen Superman actually get hit by bullets? PLENTY!! But they edit out the gun scenes here...

~Mako Tsunami's father is dead...he's flat out dead, in the US series it says he is just lost at sea

~Yugi has to duel a fake Seto Kaiba, in the US series it's the dark part of Seto Kaiba's mind that Yami had sent to the shadow realm that Pegasus had brought back[which is an awesome idea]. In the original, he's just some guy that had plastic surgery.

~Yugi's dream the night before the finals has a scene of Solomen, Seto, and Mokuba's soul cards burning on crosses in the original series

~Bandit Keith is made to sound like more of a petty criminal in original, at least in US version he's got some bad@$$ness to him

~Pegasus has no interest whatsoever in Yugi's Millenium Puzzle, in US version it is his main goal; in the original he has a deal with KaibaCorporation's head executives that if he can beat Yugi[the one who beat Seto Kaiba], they would merge KaibaCorp and Industrial Illusions to restore the reputation of their company after Seto's defeat. This would give Pegasus control over KaibaCorp and the technology he needs to bring back Cecelia. The Big Five[KC Executives] only term is he defeat Yugi in a duel.

~Red Archery Girl has a weird greenish bathing suit in US version, in original she only has clams covering her

~Original series Flashback of Pegasus getting his Millenium Eye shows him bleeding after the eye burns it's way into him

Okay, I think they won't do a very good job on Hollywood Mew Mew.I translate manga for fun, and have finished the series, alas I cannot translate Anime because they talk too fast and I am far from fluent. I was very upset when 4Kids took hold of this. Ugh, I'm joining the campaign. The thing $kids don't realize is that there are bad things in the world, and kids know about them. In TMM, I've heard that there is only mild language. Think, if you are being killed by aliens, you won't say 'darn it'. You are only human, animal genes or not. I know what they'll do to Ichigo and co. , but I shudder to think what they will do to Shiroganesan and Akasakesan.
