What's Clay's address?
embraceable_you on the clay_aiken community asks for his home address, and when confronted with replies saying it's invading his privacy, she edits her post with "EDIT: i take it the people who said i was a stalker didnt watch the VH1 special last night because clay said he gets TONS of fan mail at his home in NC because his moms address is LISTED IN THE PHONEBOOK. i would have looked it up myself, but i live in MASS." She is then told that Clay's mum had to get their info unlisted because of it.

Later on a friends-only post ellinger posts the following :

Ok, this is in regards to the post about Clay's address to send gifts to. OMFG people! Grow up! She asked for the address to send gifts to like so many have in the past. And the only reason any of y'all are saying "respect his privacy" is ONLY because he said something on the VH1 show. If he never mentioned that, many of you would say "Oh, when you find out what it is, will you PUHLEEZ email it to meeee???"

Most of your comments were really mean, and uncalled for.

Furthermore, as most of you probably claim to be Clay's biggest fan, do you actually think Clay himself would comment to her question the way many of you have by giving false address and making fun of her question?

Honestly, I'm so sick of this Middle School teasing, that I'm seriously considering leaving this community.

Comments are divided between "It's still invading his privacy" and "I totally agree with you!" A mini debate between _solitaire and ellinger ensues :

_solitaire :

Well </i>that was uncalled for. There's no reason for anyone to need his home address period. So shush.

And I'm sorry, if you feel you need to leave the community then do so instead of talking about it. If you want to syay, then, again, shush.

You're only creating more drama.

ellinger
OH OK, so IF I choose to stay, I'm not allowed to say anything because YOU say so? You tell me to "shush" and not post things Clay related that are on my mind? Um, ok.

_solitaire
I'm just saying it's pointless threatening. This post really wasn't necessary. Don't school me on how to behave and then get indignant when I choose to school you right back.

embraceable_you replies :

do people not understand its in the phonebook? and did people not realize he said he hated when people SHOWED up to his house and he didnt mind the letters.

its not like im going to show up at his damn house and ask for an autograph! thats damn rude! sending a letter is nice and it shows that his fans appreciate his music.

lol, and as ellinger said, if someone had it, you would want to know what it was too.

pricelessone makes the best comment :

Not broadcasting someone's home address on the internet is common courtesy. Regardless of the person in question, the right to privacy is something everyone is entitled to- especially when it involves their home and family. There is a fan club address for mail. That's what it's there for. There's no need for anyone asking for his home address, or the address of his mother.

I'm sure this would be true of any one of us...if somebody who we didn't know asked on a public forum if anyone knew our home address, we would be mortified, scared even, and rightly so.

We may all be fans, but that does not grant us access into every aspect of Clay's life. I realize this request was made with good intentions. However, with it being as easy as it is for information to fall into the wrong hands, I would discourage any sharing of this kind. You may want to speculate, or do your own checking- use your own judgement over that, but asking for private information on a public forum is not right.

Someone posted above that if one were to address their mail to Faye Parker of Raleigh, that might work. I just wanted to reiterate that. Seems reasonable.

Also, I hope that among this community, we can respect each other. There are ways to go about pointing out mistakes or errors in judgement. Being tactful is also a common courtesy, and all of us would do well to embrace it. I think it's regretable that anyone is considering leaving, and it makes me cringe that fellow fans would join in ostricizing one of their own over simple misunderstanding, and miscommunication.

I have to head to bed, but I just wanted to extend my position. Take care, everyone.

sigh!

Because if you respect a person's wishes, it makes you OMG shallow and stupid? O_o

hey...what's up with that? is it a friends-only post now unlocked or what? because posting the contents of a locked post for wank purposes without permission is both tacky and desperate.

oops, is it?

It was friends-only in the community. If it's not acceptable, I'll delete it.

Sorry :(

Nah, if it was friends locked in the community (as in only visible to the comm members), then it should be cool. I think that if it's friends locked in a personal journal, then it's not so cool.

since it's violating basic lj etiquette. i'm not saying it's a fw rule. i'm saying that everything else aside, posting the contents of a locked post screams of desperation to post a wank no matter what, and it boasts a lack of simple courtesy.

i don't agree with the contents of that post being here, but as the mods have not chimed in, perhaps it is something acceptable now.

it doesn't sit well on my stomach, and this is the all-about-me-show, thanks very much.

No shit. I'm nowhere near famous, but if someone posted my home address on the internet, they'd be in a world of hurt.

I would say I can't believe people need to be told this, but the sad thing is, there's not much I don't believe people are capable of anymore.

When you think about it, if people didn't have the decency not to post home addresses on the internet, there'd be a free-for-all. Hell, even the hugs'n'puppies brigade would become a problem, who wants a crowd of screaming women every time you open the door? I've known the home address of one particular celebrity for years through sheer coincidence, but for god's sake, it's the man's home. I don't camp on his doorstep begging him to marry me and I'm sure as hell not going to pass it out for other folk to do it.

It used to be quite easy to dig up call sheets for current tv series, complete with the cast members' home addresses. They'd come attached to scripts tossed by crew members or that made their way to shops like Hollywood Book & Poster. Fortunately most folks did nothing with them. I assume that nowadays, studio security is much tighter - what with performers not wanting to be stabbed and all.

And so does anyone who reads children's fantasy series, or watches anime, or obsesses over Tolkien, or writes fanfic, or plays too many games, or goes to cons...

(My apologies if I left out anyone's fandom. Rest assured you need to get a life too.)

Now can we knock off the My Fandom Is Devoted, Your Fandom Needs a Life shit?

I see your point, of course, but something about a TV show specifically designed as a PR machine for creating a pop-culture icon just...befuddles me. As does the immediate leaping to the defense of the same at every slight. But, then, I've watched exactly one episode of it, and honestly had no idea who Clay/Rueben/Kelly/et cetera were before I saw them on F_W. Ergo I'm in no real position to judge. Eh. Don't knowm much about anime either. Though my progenitor (eljuno)is an anime fan, and I trust him to know what's right and pure in this world.

So I'll just continue to be befuddled and continue to have a life, cause my fandom isn't holding me hostage in a dark, dank basement.

Yet.

I guess I can feel you on one level. There are fandoms whose existence mystify me. I honestly couldn't give less of a shit about anime at all and scroll past all the anime wank that gets posted here. In fact, one could, if one was so pretentiously inclined, snark a lot about how people in that fandom engage in 239725-post wanks about... well. Cartoons. And then the fact that there are hundreds of ficcers out there writing erotica about. Uh. Cartoons. But as my friend [info]dreago said once to Andy Hallet at DragonCon '03 HEEEE HEEEEE, "My kink is not your kink, but my kink is OK!"

Most Idolfen don't see it as dismissively as "A PR machine for creating a pop culture icon." We see it as a high-profile, cutthroat competitive talent show that takes mortgage brokers, secretaries, waiters, nurses, computer geeks and car salesmen - all of whom can sing - and gives them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

In short, we think it's fun. What's wrong with that?

I'm now reminded of that article in The Onion that went like, "NFL Junkie Makes fun of Trekkie Roommate for Being a 'Geek'."

I wish people would stop typing "y'all" when they write. I've only seen Faulkner pull it off without making me twitch.

But that's okay, we got a two-for-one in a sobby "I'm almost leaving" and Snacky's law. Oh, with a sprinkling of "You're a hypocrite, nyah nyah."

Eh, considering that I'm originally from the South and I use the word quite frequently in everyday speech -- more than I use the plain 'you', in fact -- I think I can be forgiven for typing it when I'm posting something for y'all to read. Even if forgiveness is not an option , I'm still gonna do it.

Y'all is a perfectly respectable word in casual use. In fact, I'd say it would come particularly in handy during internet discussions, so you can easily clarify that your statement covers an entire group of people and not just a single person.

Plus, keep in mind these are Clay Aiken fans, and he's from North Carolina. *g*

But yeah, I was going to point and laugh about Snacky's Law there, too. ;)

Ya'll got issues with the spelling? I kinda like it. I'm well aware of how conjunctions work (didn't spend eight years getting the BA and MA for nothing), but I'm also aware that the English language and its conventions and spellings are marvelous and awful things. It's all informal anyway. Next up: "kinda/shoulda/woulda = are they signs of the coming Apocalypse?"

::headdesk:: Ugh...don't know where my mind went. Of course I meant contractions, not conjunctions. Eh, it happens. In any event, I know perfectly well how they work. But there comes a time to move on, find styles and variations one likes. Dare to dream. Invert the illogical paraphrasis. Use the force. Aim for the stars, ad astra. That is, occasionally spell it "ya'll" just for the hell of it. Even if it annoys some random stranger. De gustibus.

Tutti accusan le donne.

it's people like you who make scrabble and yahtzee miserable for everyone. stay far far away from parties and informal social gatherings.

grammar and proper spelling are important in formal settings, but unless you're grading an essay, give everyone a break! it's obnoxious and it's absurd to act superior to others just becuz (yes i spelled it becuz) you mastered one standardized system of monkey grunts (language) and symbolic scribblings (writing).
