Hello, boys and girls! Would you like some-- 'shipper wank? The *original* 'shipper wank?

Here's the entire text of a recent post on the xfiles community at lj:
This collage is inspired by the fanfic I'm currently working on and my theory that Mulder may have raped Scully during season 7 (based on her behaviour in S8-9 towards men, her inability to call William by his first name, her uneasiness around Mulder, etc.). I've used lyrics from Sarah McLachlan's song "Possession".

~cassie
Please no flames, it's just a theory.

87 comments in a fairly small community, and they're all glorious. I particularly like the recurring "it's those perverted fanfic writers" idea, the canon-worthy persecution complexes, the argument over the meaning of the R in MSR, and the utter lack of actual discussion of any evidence.

Proving that most x-philes are reasonable people, however, we soon get equally reasonable posts (complete with collages) positing Mulder/Skinner/Krycek and of course, the one true ship, Mulder/Queequeg.

Our original poster then requests (with a new collage, too!) that the aforementioned hecklers grow up. The Mulder/Queequeg people strike back, and it's suggested that this belongs on lj_drama-- what, is f_w dog food now?

The moderator steps in to request advice on how to end it all. Using the same 'no flames' tag that started the kerfuffle! Sadly, everyone makes nice, but luckily, the original poster soon decides to storm out. The moderator steps in again, and it winds down (for the moment) with newbies giving thanks that this finally let them figure out what 'ships were, and someone requesting links to less nautical-oriented communities.

I'm not in denialthe fandom, but I skim this community every few days, so this has been typed live as I followed the wank-- I couldn't resist. I *liked* that community because it seemed to be mostly people who cared more about the *show* than fandom, which was a breath of fresh air. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

"I will now discredit everything I say by rounding off each sentence with a string of exclaimation marks"!!!!!!!!!

That was an interesting wank, but kind of frustrating; I was quite interesting in seeing the evidence, not listening to how someone's dad and mother and dog were all alcoholics and also they were raped and therefore they are Expert On All Things. Because, obviously, all cases are *exactly* the same.

Heh. I read some of the comments about M/Q (I've never watched XF) and was shocked at how people would think it bestiality for a gov't secret agent to hookup for some hot man love with a whale hunting Pacific Islander. A bit of a far-fetched crossover maybe, but still...

Ahem. Then I looked at the collages. But seriously, who the hell named the wimpy little yapper Queequeg?

Ah, sorry.

-spoilers-

Queequeg was Scully's dog, she adopted him after they found him, during a case, caniballizing his dead owner, and he was named in honor of her father's old nickname for her. He eventually got tragically eaten by an alligator.

Woohoo! It's the return of "People shouldn't write about rape (or anything besides puppies and kittens and holding hands)" wank! Luckily that leaves Mulder/Queequeg on the table!

I realize you put a warning up. I guess part of me wants to ask why a person would even attempt to explore such a dark angle? It really disturbs me. I support your right to do it, but I definately don't agree with it.

All flaming aside, there's enough real rape in the world without people sitting and fantasising about fictional characters raping each other.

Writing about rape is bad, mmmkay?

Didn't you get the memo? If we all close our eyes, put our fingers in our ears and sing "LA LA LA LA" rillyrilly loudly, rape will magically disappear.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

the first rule of writing about rape is: you do NOT write about rape!
[info]fairy_tale_echo
2004-02-03 11:20 am UTC (link)
Didn't anyone get that she wasn't trying to make Mulder raping Scully a Luke & Laura-like twist where M/S later fall for each other? She's just making Mulder the bad guy--the man that does the thing that brings her OTP, Scully/Doggett, together. So, it's obviously not an objection to someone writing romanticized rapefic, it's pretty much: don't write about rape at all, ever. JUST BECAUSE! Because if you write about it, it means you support it/endorse it/practice it.

Now that I've wanked all over "defending" her, let me conclude with these two items:

1. Mulder raping Scully?!? Bitch, are you for real?
2. Mulder/Queequeg = omgtheirloveissointerspecies!!11!1

Okay, I know it's a narrow shade of definition but SWEET WOUNDED JESUS people, fantasising and fictionalising are two DIFFERENT things. It is entirely possible to consider something as a fictional possibility without thinking "omg wouldn'it be teh KEWLEST if that happened?!!?!!1one!!" *facepalm* Just... gah. Rapefic is an old subject of conversation in XF fandom (and I'm sure all others) I've actually seen some very intelligent (non-wanky) discussions over at the Haven Fic board (where for the most part the only decent folks at the Haven post).

I was thiiiis close to posting this on [info]i_wank (thanks to my "shut up, you idiots, 'shippers rape Scully all the time" comment), but then since the post only had ~30 comments at the time, I figured it wasn't worth it.

I love [info]xfiles. It's possibly the largest collection of delicate shippers this side of the Haven. "You mean...people actually like that ugly skanky ho, Fowley? Oh, how dare you denigrate the pure true love that is Mulder and Scully's pure true love!" The best was when one member asked if Mulder and Scully would ever be able to live happily and peacefully "again." Because their lives were so sweet and happy during the entire series' run!

I was waiting for this to show up here...I'm so happy it did. *sheds a tear* It's one big ball of wanky fun!

Y'know, I haven't been a shipper since season seven. I *like* Doggett/Scully. I'm all about the angles of M/S that aren't hugs and puppies and miracle pseudo-Jesus love children. But there are rational reasons to dislike Mulder - as much as I love him, on the show he could definitely be quite the asshat - and then there's randomly vilifying for the sake of making him Teh Eval. Every time I try to wrap my mind around the idea of Mulder raping Scully, my head explodes. *wipes gray matter off of f_w*

Past that though, I can't decide what my favorite thing is - the person who said we shouldn't explore "dark themes" needed a good flogging. Also, Mulder/Queequeg - theirlovesimplywontstopyapping!

The collage is awfully pretty though...

Linzee
