Happy-fun dot_cattiness wank!
In which one poster informs us that fanfiction doesn't count as writing. People disagree with her. She gets defensive. They get defensive. There is much name-calling. Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Not Only Dead But Now Beaded As Well is thrown about by both sides, and of course Shakespeare, Star Trek, and Harry Potter have been brought into it as well.

The wankery doesn't end in that thread, though, but is drug through two more threads (so far), with the original poster patronizingly reminding everyone of the warnings on the community info in the third thread.

Oh, and of course, no fanfiction wank would be complete without several people bringing up plagiarism and the dictionary definition of it. I fully expect to see Hitler and those bitches from high school show up.

It's really turning out to be quite a beauty.

(By the way, this is my first report, so please give it to me hard use lube.)

I do like that the OP had no response to the actual published writer who informed her she was wrong.

Now. You said you were new? *raises whip* Right. On the bed, now.

That was pretty damn good.

And what was up with her insinuating that a lot of authors try to take legal action against fanfic writers? I know of a couple, but...doesn't seem to be an everyday occurence.

She writes like she thinks... flat and without any depth. *shrugs*

Well, my feeling on the subject is, "That's nice. Who gives a rat's ass?"

I've found that like anything else, the entire subject of writing is a very arbitrary designation. There are those who say if you don't write original work, you're not a writer. Others contend if you don't get paid for your work, you're not a writer. If you write science fiction or for comic books or that ilk, you're not a writer. It goes on and on.

I generally smile, silently sing the Alexander Woollcott ditty "Oh May You Fry In Hell" to all of 'em, and go on doing what I want. Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke.

There are those who want to use the term "writer" as some sort of quality judgment. The idea that anyone who sets pen to paper is a writer doesn't sit well.

"Fanfiction is not writing unless it is published first. Because published work is obviously better than fanfiction. Coincidentally, I am a published author. Ha. And since you misspelled the author's name I will refuse to answer your very legitimate question and pat you on the head instead because there is nothing I can say to that." /Condescending bullshit.

I felt exactly the same. I think it was the persistent use of the word 'exercise' to describe fanfiction that did it.

If people don't write fanfiction, then where does it come from? Does it just materialize out of thin air, when our backs are turned?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. I mean, damn. "Bitch, please" has never been so appropriate, nor has my icon.

I would articulate further on what I find so irritating, but this wank makes my brain hurt and everyone else seems to be doing a good job of it themselves.

So, I'm just going to go read some J/7 porn. That always makes me feel better.

Me too. Mostly because when someone asked her if derivative works such as Rosencrantz and Guidenstern Are Dead were considered plagiarism, and she replied with:

Not plagiarism. Why is left as an exercise for the reader.

I write AWESOME fan fiction (so I've been told).

Condescending and modest, my favourite kind of gal. I'm trying to resist the urge to tell her that by her own rules, she may create AWESOME fan fiction as an 'exercise', but she doesn't write it.

Fan fiction isn't writing and doesn't require creativity? You mean all that difficulty I have writing it while keeping the characterisation interesting and in-character was just my imagination?

Cool! Watch me pull a fanfic out of my ass!

On a slight tangent; the references to published fan fiction in this thread make sense, but whenever I see such things I'm always reminded of the random poster I read ages ago that referred to published fan novels and stories based on certain backgrounds (the Cthulhu mythos for example) as 'respectable fan fiction'. Is it just me, or is the implication that everything is is unrespectable really funny?

Aargh. Yet another person who can't tell the difference between plagiarism (which is a fairly specific offense, and one of the things that will get you kicked out of school) and a derivative work (which is legally defined, all fanfiction is, and why a fanfic author has absolutely no rights to the work unless specifically granted by its owner).

There are a decent number of authors out there who don't permit fanfic. It's completely and utterly their right. There are a lot who don't care. As such, it pays to be a little more specific...
