Name changes! Oh, the shame of it!
Funimation announces that they're changing the name of Detective Conan to... Case Closed. (Name changes for the characters are also included. But the subtitles will be left alone.)

Funimation says it's because of a legal issue that can't be resolved. And they're changing character names in the dub! Which has never been done before, God no.

Wank ensues both at the Anime on DVD forums (15 pages and counting) and Anime News Network forums.

Both ANN and AoD are changing servers, so there may be problems getting to the wank.

Fanboys. They can make a mountain out of a wankhill.

If they want something to whine about, they should watch the Lain American dubs. Now THAT is one of the worse dubs EVER. Compared to it, the US version surely will be a treasure.

* weeps as she remembers the censorship, the Latinized names...*

Out of curiosity and at the risk of unleashing a shitstorm, what did they censor?

(and isn't "Arisu" just the Japanese pronunciation of "Alice" anyway?)

Several Latin American channels (specially cable TV) absolutely censored the blood, the showing of corpses, the attacks on people, etc. There was a very emblematic episode which had more than 5 minutes aboslutely chopped off, thus the continuity was sent to Hell. Granted, (few) others exhibited the uncensored version, but still... *facepalm*

*tilts head* But that's TV broadcast, which I'd consider different from a dub for DVD release. The censorship for broadcast comes from outside the translating/etc. companies; IMO, they aren't to blame for that. Censoring for DVD/VHS release is a different case, because the motivation is different ("let's protect the children" vs. "let's not get ourselves nailed by the FCC or equivalent").

I'd never heard anyone complaining about the Lain dub before, so I was curious. (I think I've only ever seen the sub.)

I think he meant LATIN American dub.

Ahhhhh, okay.

(My point on broadcast does stand, though... that's not the fault of the distributor.)

Yes, because the story will be utterly worthless with the name changed. Why, if it was called 'Sherlock James' the main character would be a drooling lackwit

I can understand the annoyance though. While name changes hopefully won't affect the characterization or the storyline it still seems unecessary to me.

Though in this case I think the main motiviation is that the name 'Conan' is already copywrited.

I don't think you can copyright given names. And Conan is just a name (meaning praised or exalted in Irish, or wise in Scottish)

What you've got to love about fanboys is that, even after they're given a rational explanation, they continue whining.
(And yes, I really like the Japanese names, but sometimes these things happen. So?)

And the whole "Hollywood Mew Mew" thing was just earlier in the week too... I don't think all this wanking is too good for their blood pressure.

There really was no definitive reason given, but I'm thinking that maybe CN didn't want "Detective Conan" to be confused with "Conan the Barbarian"? That is, if CN actually still does show "Conan the Barbarian"...
