HP Anti-Slash Wank, Aged to Perfection.
This is an old wank, but I think it's worth reporting all the same...

The Harry Potter Lexicon and its Forums were, sadly, my introduction to HP fandom -- I found them last year when I was all impatient for Order of the Phoenix to come out.

The affiliated Fanfic Forum has all the same rules as the main forum -- no netspeak, don't oppress others, etc. -- but with one extra restriction: No slash allowed! It's inappropriate and non-canon, you see.

'QuatreR1' starts a thread called 'Slash-where do you people stand?' asking FF Forum members what they think of HP slash in general. 'Tommie' responds immediately, replying that slash is 'just wrong.' Most of those people who agree (and most of them do) claim that they don't think J. K. Rowling would ever incorporate slash into the remaining HP books.

Then, the mods step in. 'Kip Carter,' the talkative yet seemingly not-all-there eldest mod calls on the judgment of Steve, the HP Lexicon owner, whilst opining that slash fanfic is not 'suitable for this forum' on the grounds that no sexual matter of any kind is allowed. (His suggestions about capitalisation are also fun, btw.)

'Diagon Nilly' provides a restrained voice of reason, suggesting that 'any forum that allows sexual content but puts a ban on Slash in discriminatory.'

'Denise P.,' also a mod and easily recognisable for her use of pink Comic Sans in every single post, suggests that children as young as 10 use the Lexicon Forums, despite the fact that the host network, World Crossings, is also host to a huge population of middle-aged sports fans with half-naked photos of themselves for avatars.

Owner Steve weighs in, backing Denise's kids-on-World-Crossings argument, banning all sexual material from Lexicon sites, and attempting to end all further debate.

Then QuatreR1 clarifies the question, stating 'When I think of slash, I don't think generally of anything related to adult content. I was just suggesting that one or more or the characters are not heterosexual.' However, a more reasoned argument does not ensue -- although 'Lilly' does try to make herself clear, only to undermine her own argument with creative spelling.

Eventually, Kip shuts the thread down (which is why I'm hoping it's all right to link to all the supposed secret 10-year-olds), and the Forum continues happily along, as if no one had ever mentioned the evil, scary concept of slash in the first place.

'Tis okay if you don't know the source material to a wank, though you do miss a lot of good in-jokes that fly by. Nevertheless, bitchery is a wonderfully universal thing, and can translate through almost any medium.

To be honest, if I'd known of the huge amounts of HP wank to begin with, I might not have read the books in the first place. I mean, I have trouble watching Smallville now, because it's forever tainted by the wank...

You have no hope at all when the mods do that. Nowhere to appeal...

I just want to point out that the little darling in my icon was clearly not 100% straight when she was "no more than ten years old." Or a few centuries old, depending on your version of canon.

An evil part of me longs to point out that I doubt Draco will become a witty good guy and marry Ginny, or that Snape probably won't get a nose job and fuck Hermione on the potions room floor either.

You know, I'm finding that I have a lot more tolerance for admins who just come out and say, politely and clearly, that they don't allow slash 'cause they don't like it, don't want to see it, and want a list/site/forum where other people who don't want to see it can gather. I mean, I can get behind that personal preference thing.

It's when they try to start justifying it by some universal logical moral standard that it gets all squirrely. Which, I think, says something about the logic of trying to ban slash. ;)

The worst part of it is that the people who write slash are fantastic authors. Now, if it WASN'T slash, it'd be a wonderful story.

And I'm sure that if you weren't such an idiot, you'd be a wonderful person.

*cough*

What amuses me is they act like their precious board is the only place to post a fic. "If you think it's too racy, don't write it." Or maybe, I don't know, post it somewhere else?

What annoys me is the whole stance that slash is adult fic. It isn't always. There's just as much G-rated romance as with het fic.

This, right here, is why I stay far away from the Harry Potter fandom, even though I love the books, and have written fic . . . PG slash fic, at that.

Didn't you know? Anyone being gay in something fictional, at all, no matter how innocent everything is, makes it R-rated or higher automatically. Because a boy liking a boy or a girl liking a girl will corrupt our children.
*corrupts children* =D

What annoys me is the whole stance that slash is adult fic.

And that even just discussion of slash is sexually explicit by default. The mind, it boggles!

(Though not as much as when I finally realised that there are (were?) a whole lot of slash writers out there who have this "slash = NC-17 by default" thought process themselves. Sigh.)

Het is just wrong. I mean, ewww, who would ever want to see a man and a woman together? That's just so gross and it's not like Rowling would ever put it into her books. I mean, they're for kids! Kids can't see a man and a woman TOGETHER in /that/ way, it'll corrupt their precious little mindy-windies. Don't you see? All heterosexuals should be locked up, I--

Heh heh heh. This is funny. It'd be even funnier if I wasn't too tired to navigate past the super-sized avatars either, but I digress...

Imagine a parent coming to check out some "safe" Harry Potter fiction to read to their child and coming across slash!

Imagine a parent using the parental controls their internet service came with and actually doing a little bit of parenting!!

I agree with the no sexual material of any kind on the forum and there will be none in the books. It is a childrens book and I don't think the characters will be sexually attracted to each other in any way. (Maybe just a little boy/girl crush.

Because, as we all know, nobody at the age of 15 ever developed a serious crush, and that nobody at the age of 16 or 17 ever acted on the urgings of their newfound hormones.

I know a couple of 8 year olds who read the HP books, a 5 year old. That kind of stuff is not appropriate for any children escpessily children under the age of 10.

They're gonna find out anyways; it's everywhere you turn, teh sexors.

Most of those people who agree (and most of them do) claim that they don't think J. K. Rowling would ever incorporate slash into the remaining HP books.

The rest of us are going to laugh while the rest of you eat your words as Harry boinks Draco and Ron in a threesome, while Tonks runs off with Hermione.

The characters are getting older sweetie; naturally there's going to be some serious crushin' and *gack* kissin' goin' on.

"Imagine a parent coming to check out some "safe" Harry Potter fiction to read to their child and coming across slash!"

Well I am an over 27 parent with kids, who has read het and slash HP fanfiction but only very briefly. Like most adults I can manage my own fantasies without having to live someone elses!

That is beside the point though. I would never want my kids to read fanfiction largely because it is for the most part total crap but if I did I would make sure that I read it first, not because I am disturbed by slash or any other genre but because as a parent I make it my business to be aware of what my kids are doing. You can't expect other people to babysit your kids on the web - that is your job as a parent.

As for the Lexicon - well it is somebody's hobby and not a public service so I guess they can do what they like. If you don't like it then don't go there as there are so many HP sites out there that there is something for everybody.

Why does everyone assume parents are such shockable prudes? All the ones I know are dirty beggers who love a bit of smut. Even if they weren't going to let their kid read it, they'd probably bookmark it for their own pleasure later.

I intend to have kids one day. And when I do, I intend to be a responsible parent and know what my kid is up to, and also to remain a slash loving smut addict perv.
