HP Anti-Slash Wank, Aged to Perfection.
This is an old wank, but I think it's worth reporting all the same...

The Harry Potter Lexicon and its Forums were, sadly, my introduction to HP fandom -- I found them last year when I was all impatient for Order of the Phoenix to come out.

The affiliated Fanfic Forum has all the same rules as the main forum -- no netspeak, don't oppress others, etc. -- but with one extra restriction: No slash allowed! It's inappropriate and non-canon, you see.

'QuatreR1' starts a thread called 'Slash-where do you people stand?' asking FF Forum members what they think of HP slash in general. 'Tommie' responds immediately, replying that slash is 'just wrong.' Most of those people who agree (and most of them do) claim that they don't think J. K. Rowling would ever incorporate slash into the remaining HP books.

Then, the mods step in. 'Kip Carter,' the talkative yet seemingly not-all-there eldest mod calls on the judgment of Steve, the HP Lexicon owner, whilst opining that slash fanfic is not 'suitable for this forum' on the grounds that no sexual matter of any kind is allowed. (His suggestions about capitalisation are also fun, btw.)

'Diagon Nilly' provides a restrained voice of reason, suggesting that 'any forum that allows sexual content but puts a ban on Slash in discriminatory.'

'Denise P.,' also a mod and easily recognisable for her use of pink Comic Sans in every single post, suggests that children as young as 10 use the Lexicon Forums, despite the fact that the host network, World Crossings, is also host to a huge population of middle-aged sports fans with half-naked photos of themselves for avatars.

Owner Steve weighs in, backing Denise's kids-on-World-Crossings argument, banning all sexual material from Lexicon sites, and attempting to end all further debate.

Then QuatreR1 clarifies the question, stating 'When I think of slash, I don't think generally of anything related to adult content. I was just suggesting that one or more or the characters are not heterosexual.' However, a more reasoned argument does not ensue -- although 'Lilly' does try to make herself clear, only to undermine her own argument with creative spelling.

Eventually, Kip shuts the thread down (which is why I'm hoping it's all right to link to all the supposed secret 10-year-olds), and the Forum continues happily along, as if no one had ever mentioned the evil, scary concept of slash in the first place.
