I don't have a JF account (sigh. One more year.) But would like to direct someperson to (what I think) is a wank-in-progress : an AOD - Manga Forums thread (*weeps* The manga forum is relatively civil most of the time, too)

My Feelings on Clay

I liked Clay when he first came out to audition and I thought he was cute. I was a bit disappointed when he first got cut, then elated when he was wild carded back to the Final Ten. Yay. Then the Hollywood Pretty Machine came and churned him through (I picture a process similar to the "Children's Television Sausage Factory" sequence in the beginning of You Can't Do That On Television). He looked okay, then just started spiraling into...creepy. Not his fault, though...

The thing is, he seems like a nice guy, but comes off as slightly neurotic and I honestly think that all of these crazy fangirls make him really uncomfortable. I picture him in thirty years:

Clay is now living on a 42,000 acre ranch in Montana, with a cat-proof laser fence, living with his "friend" Kim Locke, who really exists solely to organize his collection of shoes that are all one size too big for his feet. He has daily botox injections, and is obsessive about where they stick the needle- if the needle goes a slice off the required spot, Clay will spend the rest of the day drinking watered down Kool-Aid and sobbing hysterically in his shoe closet. He also tapes his ears back (flesh colored electrical tape) and absolutely refuses to wear pinstripes, tweed or orange-peel textured pleather.

In his years as a pop star, he has come to a shocking revelation; Clay is actually a conjoined twin. His twin Barry's brain was the only thing that developed, and can communicate only with Clay through something akin to telepathy. He spends hours a day talking to Clay about his favorite show, "The Dog House" (starring Older Bow Wow as your average frazzled dad taking care of three adorable kids and his wacky mother). Clay HATES this show, but Barry likes it and must watch it every Thursday night on CBS.

Sometimes, his friends Ruben Studdard and Ryan Seacrest come to visit, but have to be careful, because Clay will not let anyone into the house if they have eaten cucumbers in the past 72 hours, or if they are wearing double-knit polyester.

I love to poke fun at Clay Aiken's dorktasticness, fucked up looks and sekrit evilmindedness just as much as the next person *points to icon* and have weathered quite a few run ins with rabid Clayfen. (see: my Trenyce interview, Dec 2003)

But is it me, or have you noticed that every time someone posts a Clay Aiken wank here, seemingly half the community feels the need to make a Cool Person Disclaimer by talking (at length, in graphic detail) about how ugly they think he is and how he's a flash in the pan )even though he's likely to make AT LEAST two more albums and his first one (which has since gone multi-platinum in 3 months' time) set sales records last set by Elton fucking John)?

And even if he were the ugliest, most irrelevant, most talentless soon-to-be-hasbeen ever known to fandom, WHY TEH H8, people? Why?

I mean, I really think Dominic Monaghan is so repulsive that I can't stand to look directly at him; Justin Timberlake is practically tonedeaf; Daniel Radcliffe has worn the same expression through six hours of film so far; and anime is boring and most of its fans frighten me, but you don't see me rushing out to say that Every. Single. Time someone posts an anime or LOTR or popslash or HP wank, you know?

I thought the point of this community was to point and laugh about stupid fan behavior, not how stupid you think the existence of entire fandoms are. I mean, existing for publicly ridiculing trolls and Mary Sues and crazyintense flamewars, that's something I can get behind; but laughing at the fact that people are into a certain fandom? That's just fucking rude. I do appreciate all the folks who feel like they have to apologize for being a Clay fan though. "I know he's so hideous his busy freakish red eyebrows turned my grandmother into a pillar of salt... but boy, he can really sing!" Heeeee. =)

I am here to say that there are more shameful fandoms to be a part of. Did you all know that people write The Nanny epic AU fics, and some people do slash photo manips for NASCAR drivers? Trust me, it could be way worse than going giddy over some singer.
