In case you haven't received your daily recommended dosage of tinfoil hat...
Tokyo Babylon Wank!

On the Clampesque board, Brit-chan posts a fic about Subaru, Seishirou, and tea at a particular sakura tree (Canonical elements: corpses, that significant sakura tree, and the two characters’ interactions. They also have tea a lot in the original text).

Apparently it’s got some similarities to another, older story.

C says:

“I'm not accusing you of direct plagirism, as a writer I know that other authors' works have a way of resurfacing in your own projects and can sometimes be purely unintentional. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that this is the case in this scenario.

However, I think a little credit needs to be given to Aishuu for concept work, and I look forward to seeing an edit of this post with her name bolded in the forward.”

This roughly translates to:

“I’m not saying you’re a plagiarist, plagiarist. I’m just saying since everyone in the fandom knows Aishuu’s work, plagiarist, you better give her credit for plagiarizing her idea. The only way you could have come up with this idea on your own is if you ripped off hers. No one else could have thought of these two characters having tea in this manner.”

Wank ensues, including vague threats about reporting the original poster for plagiarism, anonymous wankers out of the blue, friends leaping to the defense, and obligatory tin-foil hat references.

I'm a long-time lurker, first-time wanker. Use lube? *holds up a jug of Astroglide*

Edit: Fixed the cut tags. ^^;;

Update: Looks like someone's gone in with the admin stick and removed a bunch of the particularly trollish comments. Too bad, because they were funny, but I can see the necessity.

ETA: The Author weighs in.

What is WITH food-based plagiarism wank? These folks should get together with the X-men gingerbread plagiarism wankers, and they'd have a whole tea-party.

I wish I could throw my two cents into the ring there, but it wouldn't be worth joining just for that.

But I know the oddness of such things. One time I wrote a story that was completely original, not based on anything...then I watched a movie that had many of the same elements to it. I freaked out because I realized that everyone would think I took my story from it.

I know the feeling - I had a fairly elaborate story set up in my head once (inspired by Tenchi Muyo and art history classes, oddly) that turned out to have had a lot of structural similarities to a novel called 'Snow Crash.' At the time, I hadn't heard of it, much less read it. So I think coincidences can happen at any time.

All you have to do is look at the history of invention - often times it's just a matter of who publishes first or who gets to the patent office first, because a lot of inventions happened roughly simultaneously.

I'm still secretly wondering if I'm sharing a brain wave with the people who wrote those new Star Wars novels. I'd try to sue them for stealing all my fanfic ideas, had I actually shown more than a handful. (kidding, btw. xD)

It's a matter of disturbing coincidences. *cough* Jungian archetypes *cough* xD

I had a story based on the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. I changed names, totally ignored the plot, had my own characters, elements, storyline, whatnot. The only thing I actually kept was the vampire mythology, because, well, I like it more than Anne Rice's. Someone trolled through and proceeded to lecture me on how awful and wrong plagiarism is. o_O; When...he didn't even read the story. He commented on the first page, which was a list of characters and short-but-longer-than-main-page-one summary. And my A/N's.

It's amazing. For once my fandom wanked and I wasn't involved in any way, shape, or form! Guess that's what comes of not, like, /ever/ checking CLAMPesque anymore.

Both stories are all right, but not terribly impressive. And the author of the first one doesn't seem to want anything to do with the issue. I'd say leave well enough alone.

Gods, it's *Tokyo Babylon/X*. With a fandom that size, she might not even have read the fic. When I wrote my Grandia fic, there were maybe 3 other out there - and after writing it, I realized another discussed the same part of the game. It's possible not to have read the damned thing...

Well, the source material is limited - you're bound to cross ideas at one point or another.

I barely follow X/TB but I know that there is a ton of stuff out there. I think the whole of it, including TB is at least ten years old if not more, so you can imagine how much fanfic's accumulated in that timeframe. I think it's very possible that it's a genuine coincidence.

Wee, Eag joins teh wankage!

But honestly, these things happen. A while back, I got an e-mail for one of my fanfics about a scene in it that was similiar to hers. Never read the fic in question and told her that, and we had a little laugh.

I think someone said that there's only so many plots and stuff that you can write on too.

The same thing happened to me within the first year I was in XF fandom. Thankfully, that situation was handled the RIGHT way -- a person who saw similarities between the stories e-mailed the other author, who then politely e-mailed me and took me at my word when I said I hadn't read her story (which I had not; even in 1998 there were a billion XF stories out there).

Now everything's done in full public view, which is great for f_w but bad for fandom in general, IMO. Snarkiness is the new black.

I think someone said that there's only so many plots and stuff that you can write on too.

I think there very few concepts that are genuinely 'new'. No matter out outlandish it seems it's likely someone, somewhere has thought of it.

I do wish people would realize that writing fics with similar topics isn't plagiarism, plagiarism is taking credit for someone eles's work. There's a difference.

IMNSHO, Ari was the most annoying (very. annoying.), then C (well...they're even after her last few posts), then that Anon, and then Aishuu. but not very.
Okay, I can kinda see Aishuu's (well, really, C's) point. the fics are pretty similar, and I'd probably freak out a little bit. She is somewhat popular, but more in the CCS fandom. (although she's left lots of good fics in the lurch for PuriTeni >.<) But geeze. I thought Britchan was pretty good about the whole thing. It sucks being accused by people who JUST_DON'T_GET_IT. (reminds me of an interesting convo I had once with a rabid SM fan who swore up and down Haruka/'Amara' was a guy and that every single frame of the english version was altered. I gave up on that one)
It was the other posters that killed it, though. Especially C. Jeeesus.
BC doesn't have to give Aishuu credit. it's ONE FREAKING SIMILAR IDEA. Not from her. God help me, I wrote a Slayers fic in which "true love's first kiss" was Zelgadiss's cure (...I was 12. Quiet.) Was a popular idea at the time. Doesn't mean I plagiarized someone else's story.
...This was long. and pointless. Ah, well.

Oh, jeez. -_-;;; Right, the original author of the original fic is the ONLY ONE EVAR to come up with Subaru and Seishirou having tea. :P

I agree that plagerism IS bad. But if someone writes their own fic without ever knowing a similar one existed, how can it be "copying"?

And I hate people who cry "OMG U COPIED ME/MY FRIEND/MY FAVORITE BNF!!!! ur bad1121?11!!" over so much as a WORD of their fic being similar to someone else's. -_-;;; Or people who cry "COPYCAT!!!" over anything about someone else's clothes/artwork/writing/hair/material posessions/whatever resembling them in any way.

Hey, I once created a character named Paul McDermott who was a bitter, snarky, cynical British spoken-word artist with a talent for pissing people off. Only later did I discover that there actually was a Paul McDermott who was a bitter, snarky, cynical Australian spoken-word artist with a talent for pissing people off. Point? Shit happens.

And if "adapted concept" = "plagiarism", someone better slap Shakespeare with infringement of copyright.
