Claws Out in Smallville
I can't remember if the foundation wank on this was posted, so here it is. Rhiannonhero wrote an essay about being the bigger person and letting things go and how that was her new philosophy. Irony stepped in a few days later, when Bexless and Lyra_Sena trashed one of Rhiannonhero's stories, and tried to post it in a friends locked entry to share it. But they forgot to turn on the filter, so Rhiannonhero's friends saw it. Rhiannonhero swore she forgave Bexless (who deleted her journal over it) and Lyra_Sena, who posted a super--haha!-- public apology for what she did. Everything's over, right? Wrong. Rhiannonhero spent the next four days posting entries about the issue, even though she said she was over it. Finally, she shut up and Smallville moved on.

Until tonight, when Rhiannonhero posts a friendslocked entry about gay marriage, and at the end, says people should go ahead and trash her stories if they disagree with her, *winkie*, because she's totally over being smacked, and it's funny now, right? Only, it's *not* funny to a couple of people who responded because it's Lyra_Sena's birthday, and Rhiannonhero said she was totally over it anyway. That entry is sadly friends locked. But

Rageprufrock's entry on being classy isn't. And neither is Ladylynx's snarky classy response. Thirty to one odds on everybody kissing and making up. Ten to one odds on a "not naming names" bitchslap fest until the next Smallville episode airs.

ETA: Awww, LadyLynx deleted her entry.

EETA: But Velvetglove stepped in to fill the void left on Rhiannonhero's side!

EEETA: And now Wrenlet has something to say about it.. Still with the no-naming-of-names. I could be rich if I'd collected money up front!

It doesn't seem particularly wanky to me, either. I think it was probably a way to mention the wank going on in Rhiannonhero's LJ, which was friends-locked, and therefore inaccessible.

Uh. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the poster is wanky. But that essay on being "classy"? Looks more like an essay on being fake.

Classy is having a matching purse and shoes -- and Classy is also being smart and sexy enough to have shoes and purses that don't.

So, what if you have flip-flops and a backpack? Are you out of the Classy Club?

Grey Lands' End all-weather moccasins, beat-up navy blue Mickey Mouse yin-yang wallet, and a black messenger bag with the Lion King Broadway logo and "Los Angeles 1st Anniversary" embroidered on the front flap.

(What? It was a gift to the cast and crew, and it is a pretty damn spiffy bag. And for once, well-constructed, which is more than I can say for my TLK crew jacket that I paid almost $100 for.)

The word "classy" calls upon the idea of "class," as in "what [social and economic] class to which you belong." Having "class" comes from the idea of having status (financial and social). I'm not saying it's right or that's how it should be - although there's something to be said for the presuppositions of civility that come with the notion - but this is a long way of saying... no. I mean... try getting in to any exclusive boutique on, say, Rodeo Drive in flip flops and a backpack. In some ways, "classy"= "classist."

Wow, that's, like, the most PC I've been in years. Sorry.

Ah, passive aggression, thy name is Rhiannonhero.

I'm pretty sure ladylynx is in Rhiannonhero's camp, but I can't see how her post is in the least bit supportive. With friends like that...

And is it just me, or does the word "classy" send off white trash whistles for anybody else? I've always hated that word.

I'm not sure if it sets of white-trash whistles, but in my mind "classy" has always been a bit worrying if it's someone's primary concern for themselves. This is primarily because being classy really isn't all that hard -- if people put their priorities instead on being good people, on showing integrity and human decency, I think they'd find that "classy" sort of took care of itself.

An LJ friend of mine has an icon of her cat drinking water out of her toilet, and the caption reads, "Classy."

That's what I think of whenever I see the word now.

I dunno, people who truly ARE classy generally have the manners not to make a big deal out of whether or not they have class, or whether or not you have class. It's always brought Julie Andrews to mind for me.

.... and I have SO completely lost all concept of the meaning of that word now. It just looks like a silly jumble of letters.

QAF wank!
(Anonymous)
2004-02-17 12:12 am UTC (link)
Hey, this has nothing to do with Smallville, but I don't have a code, and I wanted to point to this wank.

pixiemoon(LJ) posts at the Queer as Folk fan community (http://www.livejournal.com/community/queerasfolkfans/) a joke about how Brian and Michael are like brothers, but they kiss each other so much. This doesn't go well with the B/M 'shippers in the community, and she deletes the post ans posts another apologizing (http://www.livejournal.com/community/queerasfolkfans/949438.html).

Then, another member who has had 4 Martinis posts something (http://www.livejournal.com/community/queerasfolkfans/949655.html) very similar to what pixiemoon apparently said (I missed the first post so I'm not totally sure). She is asked why she posts something like this, and in this (http://www.livejournal.com/community/queerasfolkfans/949655.html?thread=6300567#t6300567) comment she says it's because "I thought it was horrible how she felt she needed to retract her post because of the way it made people feel.." and "Censorship is one thing that pisses me off the MOST!".

It's not very big, but I haven't seen any QAF-related wank, so I thought this could be as good as any. :D

Forgiveness is such a difficult issue. It always is because too many people seem to think that forgiveness means that everyone has to be back together, there's no consequences, everything is "okay". That's not what it means. It basically means to "let it go", otherwise you'll live the rest of your life in bitterness. It's just another way of "getting over it" and preventing some asswipe from being in your mind. That hardly means that you have to continue with putting up with someone else's bullshit.

As for "forget". Blah, no one can do that, so "forgive and forget" is generally out of the question for most people.

But, all of this is easy to say, hard to do.

I don't think there's any kind of flamewar or bitchfight that pisses me off as much as the kind were nobody will say what they fucking mean. And it's not because I don't understand, and only partially because the sweeping generalizations are teh ugh. What really pisses me off is that they're totally unfair to the friends who don't understand. Either let your friends in on the big secret, or shut up and stop trying to get sympathetic snuggles from them. They care about you and don't deserve to be treated like that.
