It's just a banner.
Fun on [info]antiyaoi:

Deviant_love posts here about the ubiquitous yaoi/yuri support banners and their "inaccurate" portrayals of "non-gay" characters.

And I quote:

"If you wanted to promote civil right [sp] cause for racial harmony would you make banners of white-people in black-face to represent racial diversity?"

Ummm...okaaay...

And the wank continues in where wardove advocates "het support" banners...

And note also that
erice is probably the scariest homophobic troll I've seen in a while, even in an anti-yaoi comm.

Consider, if you will, that about 95% of anime is "het support" anime... I have rarely seen ANY anime where two girls even come CLOSE to admitting they love each other. (It seems to be a bit more common for guys, but not by a whole heckuva lot.) The closest I've seen, really, that I can recall (other than the Holy Two, of course) is Knights of Ramune & 40 Fresh, where Parfait, at one point, while she's trying to rescue Cacao, refers to her as "My darling!" But through it all, they both have to angst about that one guy they both adore... who's one dimension over and a couple centuries DEAD. Even the most obvious of same-sex relationships in anime are usually of the "heavily implied, but not spoken of" sort.
So even when you're risking your lives and souls for each other, it's still all about the guy... even if he's NOT IN THE FUCKING SERIES. ;p
... Ahem. 'Scuse me. I'll just... wipe things off, here...

Yuri couples get the major screwjobs no doubt about that.

And even if the two girls admit they love each other it'll only last about a week before they dump each other for some dumb guy who pops out of nowhere.

What I really love about Anti-yaoi is the folks who bitch about 'it's NOT homophobic'! Honey you may no be homophobic but you hang around a place that cheerily supports homophobia, and acts like anyone who likes yaoi or yuri is 'repressing' them in some way, so you'll forgive me if I think you're full of it.

Ahhhh! That's Eric the v.v. heterosexual catboy, if I'm not mistaken! XD (and more on that). One of my favorite recurring closet cases.

The rest of the thread seems like looking for excuses to bitch about something, but overall I've seen worse. The "blackface" comment was the most over-the-top part as far as I saw (in which case - Chuckles, how about you track down some unambiguously gay couples beyond Haruka and Michiru? They're trying to find some variety, for chrissake, and there isn't much to work with. Especially since that site is pretty old, I think from before shounen-ai series became more common in Western fandom.)

Mergh. Nobody's stopping you from making Straight Pride banners to promote your raging support of heterosexuality. You're not being oppressed. Kindly can it.

So where are the Support Het banners? Het is what is the minority in most fandoms, so doesn't it need to be the one that needs to be shown some tolerance?

Het is the minority in most fandoms? Since when? I know there tends to be a lot of yaoi in certain fandoms, usually the ones where the series is composed mostly of very pretty boys and only one or two girls, but I wouldn't say most fandoms have het in the minority, definitely not in a huge minority. And it's not like people are writing yaoi because OMG they r repressing teh het!!11! (And similarly, writing lots of het doesn't mean you're repressing the slash. Generally, it means that you're writing a pairing that you like -- or at least want to try out for fun. There's no big consipracy, people!)

I think someone should just make a "Support sex! Lots and lots of sex, no matter the kind!" banner and take care of it all in one fell swoop :)

You know, Dirty Pair has NO regular male castmembers (unless you count Flash, which has a couple that are around for a handful of episodes at a time), and there's hardly any fanfic for it PERIOD. I know there's some scattered around out there, but I think most of it is either het or non-pairing.

*rolls eyes at the "WHY IS SHE USING NONGAY CHARACTERS FOR YAOI AND YURI?!!?" poster*

The message of my site, more than supporting yaoi and yuri is to support the fans who like non canon yaoi/yuri pairings. The couples are an afterthought; I just hate to see good people who are just enjoying anime in their own way get flamed for nothing more than being themselves.

Just what I was gonna say.

Plus, it also smacks of "OMGTHIERNOTGAAAYYY!!!" which is as annoying as "OMGTHEYCANTBESTRAIT!!!". :P Really, is a fictional character's sexuality really something to fight to the death over?! I don't like the idea of Juri as straight but I don't flame people who like her with Ruka. :P

I myself made several banners supporting yaoi, yuri, het, incest, and threesomes awhile ago. XD

Open your mind is still around? Cool =)
That site is positively ancient (counted in net years, at least) *nostalgic* Put her Kunzite/Zoisite banner up on my first craptastic website some 5 years ago...

The older incarnations of that site were a bit wanky in the tone, from what I remember, but this seemed fine *shrugs* Nothing to get so offended about, it's not like she's saying "Kill all hetficcers now, they're eeevul!!!"

As for het being the minority *makes dismissive noises* Perhaps certain fandoms have a lot of yaoi, but the canon is still very strongly het-dominated. Besides, if you don't like what's out there, write your own friggin fics!

Wank is getting pretty sad if this is the best you can dig up, Armand ^_~

Really, this post isn't half as wanky as some of the stuff I've seen at Yaoi comm recently. Yeah, it's pretty stupid to get all incensed about banners, but I don't think it's quite worthy of the great name of [info]fandom_wank.

Also, I don't think Wardove's advocation is all that farfetched. The yaoi fandom double standard really bugs the crap out of me. Yaoi fans are allowed to have support banners even though they are far more prevalent than they think they are (no, I'm sorry, yaoi fans are no longer the minority. Get. Over. It.), yet the moment a het fan decides to make a support banner because they actually are the minority now (if you don't believe me, start making a tally of the number of het fics for your fandom as opposed to the number of yaoi fics, and shrines to het couples as opposed to yaoi ones), it's wank. Am I the only one who thinks that isn't fair? Whatever happened to equal opportunity?

And for the (not) last time, Anti-yaoi is not homophobic! I'm bisexual for Godsakes. If it were homophobic, I would not have joined or stayed. In fact, one of our most vitriolic members (whom I don't like very much, but only because he's a jerk) is self-professed gay. And most of our recently joined members are actually yaoi fans who are sick of the fandom, or certain aspects of yaoi itself. Hell, I'm one of them. I like yaoi, but the fandom pisses me off big-time and this is one of the few places I can vent to my hearts content. Please, read more fucking posts before you make a generalization like that!

P.S. -- Anti-yaoi also uses the traditional definition of yaoi, which is the idealized sexual relations between male anime characters. And despite what a lot fangirls like to think, that is not even close to real homosexuality. Hence, Antiyaoi is not homophobic.

I in no way dissed yaoi or said anything anti about yaoi/yuri banners, or that het banners should be placed everywhere.

I was simply trying to state, that, if you support one kind of genre than support all genres. Yaoi, yuri, and het. Nothing should be discriminated against.

Good lord, anyone who knows me, knows I've nothing against what anybody likes or supports. Nor am I a homphobic in any way either.

My statements did in fact come from my own experience in the Gundam Wing fandom, (which I've been in since '99 before it went mainstream), anyone who is in it knows that it isn't an easy place to be, but I am also in other fandoms as well.

I also realize there are fandoms out there that have are more het than yaoi, that is why I did not say all fandoms were mostly yaoi. I also wrote yaoi early on, so as a whole, I have no problem with it.

I obviously chose my words poorly, when I posted, because it seemed that everyone took my words the wrong way.

So think whatever you want to think of me, judge me however you want to judge me, but I know that the people on line that are my friends, both yaoi and non yaoi fans know where I'm coming from and what I meant by my post.
