As usual, the average citizen TOTALLY mis-read the post and did nothing but waste valuable computer time in their comment (although I do have to say-there were many that had some wonderful points & I took notice-Thanks for the opinions in that regard).

"You wasted time pointing out I was WRONG even though I READ IT AND AGREE I WAS WRONG but you DIDN'T REALLY UNDERSTAND IT and I AM BETTER."

Why won't people learn to shut up in the comments? Every time the OP responds, it's as good as saying "Tell me again how you think my opinion is moronic... pretty please!"

Filthy mouth-breathing Canadian tree-hugger! Why don't you fuck off back to where you came from! Oh? New York you say?

Actually, I don't happen to know the young gentleman's music, but I once heard his old man do a cover of Woody Guthrie's "I Am the Way," which was fan-fucking-tastic.

*sotto voce* still a mouth breather.

*resists temptation to email this to her mother*

(She loves Rufus, and supports gay marriage, but supported the war, I don't really like his music but share his views, so it's fun to taunt her with "Rufus would be on my side, you know" when we talk about politics.)

I dunno, to a certain extent, I understand the annoyance about him airing his political beefs at a performance. A lot of people probably came to hear him sing, and paid to hear him sing, not hear him gripe about the politics he dislikes.
I don't have a problem with performers who have political opinions and all that, I only have a problem with it when they
A) Put those political opinions on view in inappropriate venues (IE, in situations that have to do with entertaining, not politics).
B) Expect their political opinions to hold more weight because they're famous. (I know that starring in "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" really qualifies Janeane Garofalo to tell me what I should think of things.)
C) Get all in a snit when people DARE to disagree with those opinions, or bow down and worship them for having those opinions, or there's actually repercussions to them abrasively and loudly stating those opinions since, y'know, they work in an industry that rather requires the viewers to like them.
Example of celebrity with political opinions I don't mind: Robin Williams. He very much doesn't like President Bush. Know where he aired his beefs? At a Democrat fundraiser. This is acceptable, this is talking about his politics in one place where such is entirely appropriate.
Example of celebrity with political opinions I can't stand: the aforementioned Janeane Garofalo. She just proclaimed herself a political expert and went around talking politics on any venue that would have her. She stated things like "When you show me an American flag, I'm like 'Oh my god, you're insulting me!' Now, show me a naked gay man on a pride float burning an American flag, and -that- makes me proud!" She went on every show that would have her and screeched about hating the war and hating Bush, and went so far as to say "If we get to Baghdad and even one Iraqi is happy to see us, I'll get on my hands and knees and crawl over broken glass to apologize to Bush." After the liberation and MANY happy Iraqis, no apology, certainly not one involving broken glass, occurred, and if anything she got even MORE frothy-mouthed. And then, when her new series got canceled before it even aired an episode, she exploded about how she was being repressed and whatnot. (I think it might have had more to do with you insulting a large portion of your viewerbase, dumbass.)
*coughs, wipes that up*
Anyway, it's a case of "having an opinion" vs. "my opinion is more important because I'm famous, so you'd better listen to it at any time I want to".
Ahem... in fact, the last few panels of this comic may sum it up precisely.

According to IMDB
Janeane, the petite woman with the acerbic wit, was born in Newton, New Jersey, in 1964, and had many jobs before breaking into show biz. She worked as a bike messenger, a shoe salesperson (no doubt with Al Bundy's disposition), waitress and temp secretary. Watching David Letterman on TV inspired her to write comedy, and by 1985 she was doing standup comedy. As such, Janeane has become a cult figure, giving a voice to a generation, venting her frustration at TV, dating, relationships, life in general and anything that ticks her off in particular. Janeane did sketches on the Ben Stiller show in 1992 (an Emmy winning, but canceled show). She would continue to collaborate with Ben Stiller in future projects. Janeane received 2 Emmy nominations for her work on the Larry Sanders show (1992), developing her signature character: a smart, cynical woman with a razor wit.
::shrug:: Sounds like she's just doing the same stuff that made her popular in the first place.

Yeah, but in the appearances on shows and such I'm talking about, she wasn't there as a comedian, she was speaking as an actual supposed political expert, with nothing to qualify her as such any more than you or me; the only difference is, you or me don't have a couple of movies under our belts, and thus you or me don't have an agent that can call up the host of a political news show and get us on as a guest.

I think the difference would be that you and I haven't made a successful career out of producing, packaging and delivering the snark. When the political news shows want that for their audience, they know she can bring it. I doubt that her agent is twisting anybody's arm.

I have to agree here.

I recall the kerfluffle with the Dixie Chicks who managed to piss off their audience by expressing their dislike of the President.

I was amazed at how people reacted like the Bush Gestapo was going around and breaking the thumbs of DC fans.

Uh no the President didn't use his eval powers to make your sales drop, you managed to annoy your core audience who responded by NOT buying your stuff.

So the lesson is either A don't piss off your fans, or B if you do piss them off try to take it like an adult.

Well, in their defense they also got a fair number of death threats along with the drop in album sales.

No, people don't have to like what they have to say, and they don't HAVE to buy their records, but I think threatening to burn their houses to the ground with them inside is probably a legitimate cause of concern.

Yeah that was a bit much, but part of what bugged me was how many people were blaming the President for it.

Now God only knows I want to smack the man at times but I really doubt he had the secret service make death threats to Country Music Stars.

A) I agree.
B) I really agree.
C) I really totally agree.

(But then, I'll be voting for Bush for the second time later this year, so in most places in LJ-Land my thoughts mean nothing :P)

However, the OP was pretty dense to post that to a fan community and expect a simple disclaimer to keep everyone off her ass. Various actors in fandoms I adore do politial things that chap my ass, but I keep those grumblings to my *personal* LJ/blog, or places like therightfangirl where I'm not gonna be bombarded with a debate I don't want. Of course, then I don't get Teh Wank ;) But I've made my choice, and I'll live with it...

I went to see Janeane perform a couple years ago. This was right before she started going on every talk show that would have her talk about the war and whatnot. Now, I agree with a lot of her views. And yet, when I saw her live, I was all, "Shut up Janeane!" It isn't even that she talked politics--politics and comedy together can be quite a lovely duo, when done correctly. But the way Janeane discussed her views, you'd have thought she'd have been at a Green party fundraiser as opposed to a comedy show. You can get your views through without alienating your audience, IMO. And when you alienate people that actually otherwise agree with you--i.e. me--then you need to reevaluate your act.

So sorry I missed this yesterday! One of my favorite parts was when she gets all snotty with a commenter and starts the personal attack:

Are you so angry because you're s suburban late-teen early twenty something in the mid-west dying for some culture to enter your boring life before you get stuck marying the first man that'll have you?

Aaand she herself lives in - Michigan.

On another note, I was at the concert and other than the one comment I found it pretty apolitical.
