Imagine the folks at The Mary Sue Report making fun of a Mary Sue!
There once was a girl who posted about her self-insert fanfic being plagiarized and asked for her fellow community members to back her up by flaming the crap out of the plagiarist.

It wouldn't be all that wanky if it weren't for the fact that she posted about this in The Mary Sue Report...

Did you actually *read* my story? Do you have any *proof* that it's an MS? Yes, it's a self-insert, but I worked VERY HARD not to make it a Mary Sue story.

Wow, how does that work? I'm boggled. It's like she said that she mixed blue and red but tried VERY HARD not to make it look purple. Would have been a neat trick, I guess... That girl needs to lay off the crack. Or you know, get a better quality rock or something.

Actually, I believe it is possible:

http://enterprise.mathematik.uni-essen.de/~bastian/Ranma/MarySue.html

I'm writing a self-insertion in the Baldur's Gate-verse (sort of). The me in the fic is me, including being fat, frequently lazy, bad with money, and bitchy. So far, I've been able to maintain the balance. I think.

I've got something going of the same nature. Chaya meets Middle Earthâ„¢! She is fat, ugly, unadapted for survival without public transportation, and all the elves hate her. :D People mistake her for a very tall hobbit with shoes.

Maybe I should post it somewhere at some point. o.O

I don't think I have ever seen so many variations on the spelling of plagiarism. I'm also not very impressed with the flames. Sure they threaten to report her and call her names, but there doesn't seem to be any real heat behind it. I give it a 5.6.

You're right--all of the flames are a variation of "You bitch, you'll never get away with this!" Yawn.

Considering all the work the original author is going to to drum up support, you'd think she'd hit on at least a few flamers with a bit of creativity.

indeed. does she live in a world where self-insert mary sue is not only a totally valid form of fic, but likely to be welcome in an anti-mary sue community?

I posted this in the hopes that I could get a reasonable reaction. Insulting *my* story because I dared to post that it was plagiarized? I don't think that's very constructive, do you?

i'd say it's a fair bet that anyone calling a fic 'bad' does not intend to be constructive.

in fact, i'm racking my brain trying to think of something constructive which might have been said to her, in the interest of improving her somehow. 'it's certainly clear that you know what plagiarism is!' 'good job with the commas, but next time you might want to try not adding yourself to the story, and cut out eighty percent of your periods.'

For the heck of it, I took a brief tour through the plagiarized story. I bring back tidbits! Enjoy the irrelevant exposition, the peculiar word usage, and the surfeit of periods scattered liberally throughout.

The giant hill my house stood at the top of was famous for its girth and steepness, and often was the death of our ancient bus' fragile motor's most spectacular failures. This was one of the best of them- we were situated at about a right-degree angle.

...not to mention the wonderful prolificacy of her cursing vocabulary.

Old Bob is.well.my hill is more than a match for him...

Past the small brook that babbled at my feet, the field of long grass seemed to go on.and on.and on.as far as the eye could see.

"Speak, or we will take you before Thengel King!"
And that was when I fainted.

And then they all got run over by a truck.

Also big fun: in the author's notes, the plagiarizer slams the story that she stole and posted under her own name. "Yes, yes, I know. Crappy self-insertion." Heh. Next time, maybe she should steal something she actually likes?

Also, I'm not a writer so maybe I just don't understand, but is plagiarism really that traumatic? I get that you would be pissed but she's acting like her doggie just died.

It's theft, so I guess you have to consider how you'd feel if something you loved was stolen. Even worse--with writing it's a matter of creation and hard work, and then someone waltzes in and just TAKES it . . . it can hurt deeper than almost anything else I can think of.

Especially if what you wrote was really good, and then there's someone else taking the credit for it--just thinking about it is upsetting enough.

What I like is not being able to come up with your own original insult when you're flaming someone for plagiarism.

I'm shocked that no one has resorted to comparing the plagiarist to the Nazis. It's not a real flame fest until someone said "You know who else did ? Hitler, That's who." These kids today, they don't flame like they did back in my day.

[info]ivyblossom
2003-04-09 09:52 pm UTC (link)
Okay...is there actually a difference between a Mary Sue and a self-insertion? Cause like, I'm not seein' a difference. Isn't a Mary Sue...a self-insertion, or did I miss something in fanfiction 101? Was I flirting with Cassie Claire during that part, or what?

Or is it a self-insertion when you want to still make fun of Mary Sue writers while actually writing a Mary Sue?

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

I was always under the assumption that a Mary Sue was a particular *kind* of self-insertion. But I've never bothered to pay much attention to the details, since I avoid all self-inserts like the plague. So, to answer your question...I don't know.

Was I flirting with Cassie Claire during that part, or what?

I just finished reading the flames. Oh dear. "Plagiarism is the worst crime the mankind has ever come up with, to commit it is to commit a sin of tremendous malice, may you rot in hell forever while being punctured by Satan's cock, you evil, filthy, cum-guzzling piece of plagiarist shit!"

...here's a confession post from the girl who called for all the aid to fight her plagiarist:

I've really fucked up. Really badly.

Here's the truth:

My name is Talia.

I am fourteen years old.

I live in New Jersey.

I have three sisters.

My mother is a doctor who has been phsyically and verbally abusive towards my sisters, my father and I in the past. That part is true.

I do not have a boyfriend named Gabe. Last year, I had a crush on a boy named Gabe for most of the year, and so the whole boyfriend thing was pure and utter wish fulfillment.

The plagiarisms: two out of three were false. The first two I made up, but the last one was real.

All of my fanfic, original stories, and poems are my own.

I might have lied in various small ways, but those are the major things I can think of. If you have any questions comment or leave me an email.
