Two wanks for the price of one!
And not on LJ! Unfortunately, it's on Yahoo! Groups. Thus I shall explain the wanking. Cut because this is gonna be one long post...

The one big rule in this group is "OT posts are allowed, but you must ask for replies off-list. Replies and discussion from OT posts are not allowed.", OT being anything that isn't directed related to James and/or Harry. Simple, right? Right?! Wrong...

Person 1 asks about "Inaccurately written sex scenes;
not badly written, just inaccurate" because they are writing a humor fic on this subject.
The next responder (Named 'Rusty', who is already notorious for long ranting discussions) posts about his pet peeve with this exact thing, and asks about the 'Scissoring Motion' in hetero. sex that is commonly mentioned in slash fics. Someone else also responds in curiousity of this topic. The discussion turns to m/f sex vs gay sex. Thus far, the discussion mentions fics here and there, and everything is peachy keen, ok, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and everyone is getting along. Yay!

30 or so posts later...the tide has turned, and fic discussion is nowhere to be found. All that is left is talk of sexual areas, slang for them, and lubing of said areas. Suddenly, a random list member asks (politely enough) for the thread to stop, as the discussion has reached 60 posts. Request is ignored, discussion goes on. Someone seconds the motion and another. And then...

Many will agree with your point to stop writing about the topic, but some people like to read this. I'm sorry if I offend you, but it's not terribly hard to just click delete, is it?

Another person agrees that deleting it should be the simple solution. Someone else suggests that the list owner create an OT group for discussion such as this. And in the meantime, the original topic is still going strong. By this time, people are annoyed. One member even points out an HP OT group for them. Toss in a few replies asking how discussion is OT, blah blah... Finally, an admin steps in and in summary says that she woke up to find 100 posts in her inbox the morning after the original post (which, remember was about looking for fics that had inaccurate sex scenes) was posted. She then goes on to say that said discussion has indeed veered way off topic and that the thread either ends or ties in to James and/or Harry. Thus everything turns out ok, right? Of course not!

A few posts later, and we have whining...

... That whenever an interesting topic of conversation comes up, somebody who doesn't like it whinges to the mods, who promptly issue a C & D order, and the whole thing is canned. And then two polls (not made by the mods) appear. One: "Should we stop the current line of
discussion on male sex?" and Two: "should we ban all OT posts?" Members aren't amused. And thus the debate of whether the thread was OT or not goes on. Then dear old Rusty steps up and bitches that *clearly* he was on-topic even though he didn't mention Harry or James anywhere in his posts.

Really! Give me an effing BREAK, already!!

Do I HAVE to SAY that I'm looking for an appropriate name to call Harry or Draco's "acquired" female organs, or that I'm going to use the word in referring to Narcissa, Hermione, or Lily's plumbing in order to ask the QUESTION?

OBVIOUSLY I'm asking the question IN THE CONTEXT OF WRITING HARRY POTTER SLASH.

Rusty posts again in response to an off list complaint he received from a member about the thread. The mods tell him to shut up or leave. He leaves a post saying that he is leaving. People get pissy and go back to the whole thing of "You could have just deleted the posts!" Co-admin posts again, saying "This is not a democracy. Follow rules, please." So far it's seem to have died down, but god knows when someone will bitch again! And where is the list owner in all of this! To read the whole thing, or if you just want some HP goodness, join Glassesreflect at Yahoo! groups.

If you're referring to what I think you're referring to, you're going to need an awfully big bucket to carry all the spooge. That is if you're referring to 'she-the-loss-of-whose-voice-will-not-leave-the-fandom-any-richer' (unfortunately, she never shut up long enough for anyone to find out if she was right. There isn't enough tinfoil in the world for the hat this woman needs

Well, you've caught a little of her spooge on D-M, but you've missed the point that Jeylan is a multi(Yahoo)group wanker - she has already made it here once when she bitched about a story not stimulating her chakras on CriticalEdge (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CriticalEdge). She managed to get banned from that list after making possibly the most ridiculous threat to leave a group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CriticalEdge/message/8624) since fandom was invented. She then started acting up on ROG-L (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ROG-L), OnlyDuncanMethos (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OnlyDuncanMethos) and HLMysteries (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HLMysteries), where she managed to antagonise every single member and list admin (she's now either moderated or outright banned on all three now) before descending on the moribund Duncan_methos (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Duncan_Methos) group and making a spectacular ass of herself (and once again getting herself moderated) not just over the copyright issue but other matters as well.

To be honest, I'm surprised no one has reported more of this here before. Her wanking is so multilayered and so elaborate in its idiocy it's difficult to summarise - just find a post by this creature and there be wank, but it's always a slightly different wank. The only common themes are:

1. Despite having only a limited exposure/knowledge of the subject in hand, she is an unquestioned authority on that subject, and will unerringly find an interpretation of canon so out of sync with reality that she is guaranteed both hostility and argument, but seems astonished when she gets either.

2. Anyone who disagrees with her is either stupid, juvenile, narrow-minded or has been bullied into it by BNFs

3. Anyone who enjoys things that she does not is kinky or perverted and therefore not worthy of her attention

4. She's far too busy to write fanfiction which might explore her rather unusual ideas because she's writing a pro novel and therefore is also an expert on all matters literary. Despite this, she has more than enough time write long flamey replies to anyone and everyone who disagrees with her, while making sideswipes at beloved and entirely non-involved and nonwanky members of the fandom who have caught her jaundiced eye.

Opinion is divided as to whether she's a troll or mentalled deranged. Those who've been exposed to her in X-Files fandom say she's both. Pray she doesn't discover your fandom next! Certainly never even in passing wish she would drop dead - she will then in all seriousness characterise this as a death threat and continue with this interpretation despite all attempts to reason with her (and thus guaranteeing that idle wishes come closer and closer to reality).

(And yes, I will stay anon, because she seems inclined to make legal threats and I don't care to attract the attention of such a fruitcake)

She's not a troll; she just doesn't get it. She's the same way in person, although not anywhere near the level she's exhibited online.

seems like every fandom's got at least one of those. i know my darling L&O fandom got sideswiped by someone who sounds an awful lot like this woman a few months ago, and now she's come back, and she looks to have settled in for a long, tactless stay. oh, hurrah.

I just noticed....on Duncan_Methos, the person she was arguing with was 'em_keres'. And oddly enough, on CriticalEdge, I see a reply to that lovely post of hers by whom else? Em_Keres. Interesting.

It's not a coincidence - Jeylan is baiting various fans who've incurred her ire, and Em being into kink, popular, mouthy, intelligent and a lawyer, makes Jeylan's blood boil since she can't stand people who like kink, are smarter than her or know more about their shit than her. Em is only one of her victims - her infamous 'oops' post (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ROG-L/message/8800) (a comprehensive, vicious but rambling flame 'accidentally' sent to the ROG-L list but not deleted) lists all her targets and the basis of her grievances, as well as being a fascinating, if somewhat comprehensible insight into the workings of her twisted little mind.

Jeylan's latest foray into trollery was to claim a comprehensive knowledge of global copyright law based solely on conversations with her 'publisher friends' (her authority for everything is either her amazingly comprehensive Master of Education which makes her an expert in everything from writing to rational debate, or conversations with her vacuous circle of friends). When a British copyright lawyer offered politely to correct some of her sweeping statements, Jeylan first of all insulted her being British (as if this was a crime) and then fell back on her friends' superior experience, ignoring all advice and explanations. This is typical - she knows more about gay sex than gay men, more about Duncan MacLeod than any other fan despite (a) hating the character and (b) only having seen the Methos eps (approximately a fifth of the entire series), more about writing HL fanfiction than any one else, more about pro writing, more about... well you get the picture. Polite attempts to advise her to sit down and shut up until she knows a bit more about the topic have invariably met with ad hominem attacks and school yard derision, so politeness isn't tried much these days.

But the hidden wank is that of several of the list admins who have modded her, and still allowed blatant flames through so she can be comprehensively mocked - or unmodded her during the height of her own wanking (after previously keeping her modded) so she can be hung on a rope of her own making. Requests to stop feeding the troll at all levels must, therefore, be taken with a grain of salt - some people are *enjoying* watching the catfights while pretending to maintain a highminded hauteur about it.

It's all either vastly amusing, or vastly stupid. Take your pick.

(I'm not Em, BTW)

The Harry Potter wank sounds like it was cloned from the continually recurring off-topic wanks from the goth list I used to moderate. They'd come up like swallows in the spring, over and over, until we finally had to formulate the rule as "Just because Goths like to eat broccoli, it doesn't follow that broccoli is goth or on-topic on a goth list."

Of course, then we had to have the "what is Goth" discussion, which to the best of my knowledge started before the stars coalesced out of free-floating hydrogen atoms and is still going on.

It's times like these I'm glad I go no email on my Yahoo groups. I saw some of the earlier, more on topic posts about the subject, but also the first plea to shut the hell up already. Is it that hard to read the rules? And no, arguing the merits of dick vs cock on an HP fanfic group doesn't automatically mean you're talking about sex in HP fanfic.

People are so stupid it hurts.

m/f sex on-topic for a slash list?
[info]redina
2004-02-22 05:50 am UTC (link)
Some days, I have this pounding headache.

For a Harry and James Potter discussion and fiction list, folks (most were women) thought sharing their experiences of anal sex and how they do it was on-topic.

Granted, I added my own stupidity to it by arguing this was off-topic based on the rules the moderators had set.

Oh, and the off-topic group posted on Glassesreflect... Let's just say there's no love for the Glassesreflect mods, anyone who is critical of HP fanfic, and anyone who disagreed that women taking penises up their rectums did not belong on an HP slash list focused on Harry and James Potter.

Although, considered how femme Harry can be portrayed in fanfic, maybe this was relevant... even though women don't have prostates.

As the vocal admin/moderator in this wank...

The mods tell him to shut up or leave

Neither Sarvi nor I told him to leave (I can only speak for myself though when I say I am glad he did - as we had another issue with him last month off list), I think that was just one of his ploys for sympathy and attention. He and I exchanged a few emails briefly after that where he called me homophobic and male bashing (for stopping the discussion apparently).

*sigh*
