Two wanks for the price of one!
And not on LJ! Unfortunately, it's on Yahoo! Groups. Thus I shall explain the wanking. Cut because this is gonna be one long post...
The one big rule in this group is "OT posts are allowed, but you must ask for replies off-list. Replies and discussion from OT posts are not allowed.", OT being anything that isn't directed related to James and/or Harry. Simple, right? Right?! Wrong...
Person 1 asks about "Inaccurately written sex scenes;
not badly written, just inaccurate" because they are writing a humor fic on this subject.
The next responder (Named 'Rusty', who is already notorious for long ranting discussions) posts about his pet peeve with this exact thing, and asks about the 'Scissoring Motion' in hetero. sex that is commonly mentioned in slash fics. Someone else also responds in curiousity of this topic. The discussion turns to m/f sex vs gay sex. Thus far, the discussion mentions fics here and there, and everything is peachy keen, ok, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and everyone is getting along. Yay!
30 or so posts later...the tide has turned, and fic discussion is nowhere to be found. All that is left is talk of sexual areas, slang for them, and lubing of said areas. Suddenly, a random list member asks (politely enough) for the thread to stop, as the discussion has reached 60 posts. Request is ignored, discussion goes on. Someone seconds the motion and another. And then...
Many will agree with your point to stop writing about the topic, but some people like to read this. I'm sorry if I offend you, but it's not terribly hard to just click delete, is it?
Another person agrees that deleting it should be the simple solution. Someone else suggests that the list owner create an OT group for discussion such as this. And in the meantime, the original topic is still going strong. By this time, people are annoyed. One member even points out an HP OT group for them. Toss in a few replies asking how discussion is OT, blah blah... Finally, an admin steps in and in summary says that she woke up to find 100 posts in her inbox the morning after the original post (which, remember was about looking for fics that had inaccurate sex scenes) was posted. She then goes on to say that said discussion has indeed veered way off topic and that the thread either ends or ties in to James and/or Harry. Thus everything turns out ok, right? Of course not!
A few posts later, and we have whining...
... That whenever an interesting topic of conversation comes up, somebody who doesn't like it whinges to the mods, who promptly issue a C & D order, and the whole thing is canned. And then two polls (not made by the mods) appear. One: "Should we stop the current line of
discussion on male sex?" and Two: "should we ban all OT posts?" Members aren't amused. And thus the debate of whether the thread was OT or not goes on. Then dear old Rusty steps up and bitches that *clearly* he was on-topic even though he didn't mention Harry or James anywhere in his posts.
Really! Give me an effing BREAK, already!!
Do I HAVE to SAY that I'm looking for an appropriate name to call Harry or Draco's "acquired" female organs, or that I'm going to use the word in referring to Narcissa, Hermione, or Lily's plumbing in order to ask the QUESTION?
OBVIOUSLY I'm asking the question IN THE CONTEXT OF WRITING HARRY POTTER SLASH.
Rusty posts again in response to an off list complaint he received from a member about the thread. The mods tell him to shut up or leave. He leaves a post saying that he is leaving. People get pissy and go back to the whole thing of "You could have just deleted the posts!" Co-admin posts again, saying "This is not a democracy. Follow rules, please." So far it's seem to have died down, but god knows when someone will bitch again! And where is the list owner in all of this! Join us in the next post for Wank #2, which takes place on a Duncan/Methos group.
