Tori Amos Wank.
How Certain Tori Amos Fans, oh sorry, 'Ears With Feet' are Far Too Uptight, Part 2, 394.

It all begins with a comm member posting the results to a rather lame Quizilla quiz entitled, "which Tori Amos song are you?" Other community members follow suit before the mod steps in to ask people to stop clogging up members' friends pages with their pointless boring shite results.

However, some hapless community member must have missed this completely and posts up yet another result in a new post.

Then the fun begins as wearingabeanie makes a post to extract the urine and link to a site which mocks La Amos.

Some people agree and see the joke, but sugarpuss takes offence.

There's also a touch of icon wank and for some reason, a bit of yammering on about Janet Jackson's nipples. Fun for all the family.

EDITED TO ADD: It's still going, and it just got very, very bitchy. I'm finding myself feeling sorry for the mod. *more sporfling*

I think so. I'm not familiar with that kerfluffle but given that at one point in this one she says, "I appeared on LJDrama quite unexpectedly -- I found out about it here, actually -- because I was being impersonated and harassed."

So you're probably right. And yes, an epidermis would be to her advantage, definately.

No doubt because she's too busy honing her 'razor sharp sarcasm' and summoning rockstars.

Educate a newbie.

Why is there Tori Amos wank in the first place? What is so polarizing about a singer who seems to have largely faded out of the public conciousness? What is it about this fairly twee and talented singer that makes her detractors howl and her defenders break out in hives?

I mean... I like her, sorta. I dig the fragile fairy look she's got going on. I illegally downloaded some of her newest album. I feel her pain. But why is her fandom so wanky anyway?

Oi. I not sure myself to be honest. I love Tori Amos, I really adore her music but many of her fans just go out of their way to come across as 'deep' and self-analytical. It's all horribly pretentious. For me, Tori Amos is another one of these people who fall into the "love me, fear my fans" category.

The fandom also suffers from the new vs. old problem. Old fans often boast about how they discovered Tori while Dinosaurs roamed the earth and consider the fans who discovered her after she started using electric keyboards and samples the lowest of the low. There's a lot of "I'm more fannish than thou" in this fandom.

Much as I love Tori Amos, I'm glad I stayed the hell out of the fandom!

I heard about her in the 90's and prefer her old stuff, but so what? Some of the new stuff is really good. And I LIKE some of her electronic remixes! :D

There is a mood in the fandom that seems to go along with the idea that 'old Tori' ie Tori, the piano and nothing else is inherently better than new Tori, with the dance backbeats, and the band that tours with her. Like it's purer or more honest. I don't know. I don't get it. I don't think it's better, it's different.

Mind you, if she'd stayed with just the acoustic piano, they'd complain that she hadn't developed musically and artiscally. People will always bitch abotu something.

*snerk*

The Indigo Girls just put out a new album, so their fans are doing the typical wank-dance on the mailing list: all the people who own all the bootleg live shows and have seen the stuff on the new album performed before, acoustically, are fap-fap-fapping away.

It's the same thing every time as it has been for the past . . . four or five albums; the "omg I r teh kool," had these songs memorized long before the recording studio was even booked, lord-it-over-the-West-Coaster crowd gets the album and bitchbitchbitchbitchBITCHes because the studio tracks sound different from the acoustic tracks. Because apparently "overproduced" to them means "more than two acoustic guitars, and maybe drums and bass." There's currently a thread on the main IG mailing list entitled "Why do you hate me, Peter Collins?" Who knew the album's producer was on a personal crusade to make this one person's life miserable by adding a Hammond B-3 organ, a cello, and a few other instruments to the studio arrangements?

Come to think of it, the Dar Williams list is kind of the same way about acoustic instruments and "overproduction." I remember the splooging over "The Green World," which is way more acoustic than "The Beauty of the Rain," by which point I made sure to NOT be on the list any more. :P

And Ani fans . . . good lord, I'm not even touching those. I love me my modern female folk-rock, but the fans . . . gah.

Ahhh Dar, I love Dar wank. I think I'm like a Dar double agent, because I went to college in Western Mass. and got to see her live a few times and "got" that whole thing, but I'm from California and moved back there. It was nice, when I was still on the list, to be able to pull out my "I went to a women's college too ya fucks!" cred.

That's sort of a universal truth with musicians like Tori, or Ani DiFranco, or the Indigo Girls, or anyone who's transitioned from a spare acoustic sound to a more lush instrumentation. And some of the old-school fans act like these musicians got forced at gunpoint by their producers to acquiesce to the new sound, and had to be dragged into the studio kicking and screaming.

*coughs* Also, inspired by this thread and recent IG-list goings-on, GIP.

Cause, you know, they are forced by their producers to do more than guitar. Everyone knows folk-rock could be as big as Britney if you just add cello.

*snerk* If I recall properly, the IG fandom had that wank over cello a few albums back when they made a cellist a regular part of their band.

And then there was the wank over Emily playing piano on some songs, and the wank over them starting to use electric guitars, and the wank over the weird-ass background vocals by a Native American group called Ulali on Shaming of the Sun, to say nothing of the wank every time they change a band member . . .

I mean, seriously. If there was ever a major label folk-rock band with tons of creative control over their records, IG would be it. They're forever learning new instruments and incorporating them into their songs.

Back in the day, the best Toriwank was found on these forums. Notice all the (v. v. wanky) healing and survivor forums. Because of her connection to RAINN and the LGBTAQOMGWTF community, Tori fandom tends to take itself more seriously than other music fandoms, and generally feels damn good about itself while doing so. Tori's music has a message but not everyone is smart enough to get it. And she suffered like they did. Listening to Tori Amos is akin to being an activist, or something.
