A Very Magical Wank
And it isn't even Harry Potter!

Apparently, there is a movie coming out based on the book Ella Enchanted.

It's coming out in just a couple months, but I had no clue until today. When I looked up the movie on IMDB.com I discovered that this book has lots of fans... and they are outraged! Outraged, I tell you!

LMAO.

Though it's hard to fault them. I'm more than a little pissed about it myself.

Sadly, I have just watched the trailer. And, um, yeah.

I also saw the trailer recently, and ditto. Not too impressed with that particular artistic vision, I have to say.

Can you give me a link to it? I haven't read the book, but I'd like to see what the fuss is about.

Here is the trailer, courtesy of Apple. (I think I have to shill for them or they come and take my iBook away, or something.) It is very purple, with pink accents.

Here, for a bit of contrast, is the book, which is neither pink nor purple, but a nice green.

The actual contents I leave you to explore, or not, at your leisure. :D

THEY RAPED SOMEBODY TO LOVE!!! Argh....

Looks like a Hollywood teen comedy, not my thing... so, the book is better? It is a book or series?

What's the deal with the chick acting like she's under Imperius and taking commands from everyone?

The idea is that basically, it's really loosely adapted from the Cinderella story. Only it actually comes up with a reason for Cinderella being a complete and utter wuss - she was given the 'gift' of obedience by a fairy when she was a baby, and she literally can't disobey anyone.

It was never that extreme, though...in the book, if someone had ordered Ella to fly, she would have been in actual distress and possible physical pain due to being incapable of obeying. I get the feeling that in this film, she'd take to the air.

That said, the film looks like fun. It just doesn't look like the book.

I wanna read the book now. It seemed like an intriguing concept before, but now it seems REALLY good.

*jerks thumb upward*

What she said.

I mean, the real conflict throughout the book, up to and including the denouement, is all in Ella's head, and she's got wonderful stuff going on up there. I was probably foolish of me to entertain half a second's hope that the movie would be like it at all, but ... yeah. *wipes away tears*

And yes, just one book, no sequels in sight or anything.

My favourite part is the guy who keeps going on about how Eric Idle is a perfect choice for a narrator, never mind that the narrator is clearly stated to be an older Ella:

"I don't know WHO fencergirl is, but she should not, I repeat, should NOT offend Eric Idle."

And when someone else makes a comment that the people in charge should have stuck with the book, they respond:

"Well apparently you don't know very much about the "man" who is narrating! If you did, you wouldn't say such a thing."

Uh-huh. I'm sure Mr Idle is thrilled to have such a champion.

Gail Carson Levine wrote it. And it's a good book, I own it and I have read it and reread it many times. It is not however the holy grail, as all the people are making it out to be. Freaking psycho's. I'm personally looking forward to the movie, because frankly as fun as the book is, it'd probably be a pretty boring movie.

Can't comment much as I have never heard of the book. It is interesting to note though that not only are the fans 'omg so TOTALLY outraged' to a man, but very few of them seem able to spell or punctuate much at all...which makes me think that sadly nobody is going to be able to take them terribly seriously.

I love that book! I can no longer read it, however, because all the Farscape watching makes it impossible for me not to laugh when I read that Ella & co. live in the magical land of "Frell."

This is only the second Anne Hathaway movie I've ever heard of, but so far it is getting the exact same reaction out of me as the first did. That being: "people tell me the book is good, but based on the movie trailer, I'm afraid I will be taking them at their word."

Hee. When I read the Princess Bride, I was fifteen, just old enough that I was all, "Oh, this [metanarrative] is so cool! Nice!" And then I was all, "Wait, is this for real?" And then I was all, "Nah, no way is this real." But this little part inside me kept saying, "It is so real. It is so. You don't know everything, do you? There could be an S. Morgenstern and you wouldn't know anything about him. I do believe in fairies! I do! I do!"

What? Soon you're going to be telling me that people thought Go Ask Alice was real!

Oh wait, that was me... [sigh] Although I do have to admit that even when I read the book, I at least proud myself on the fact that even back then I thought the main character was a total half-wit.

Late commentating, I know, but I had to say something.

There is a reason for the outrage. Ella Enchanted is a kick-ass book. The protaganist is spunky, has her own problems, can be shockingly naive, and keeps you hooked. The whole plot is so wonderfully traditional yet different.

I have been following movie productions since before they had casted everyone. I was annoyed from that point on. Miramax calls it a "teddy bear project" geared for "younger audiences." No. Just...no. The whole story has been assraped and I am not over reacting when I say that. A tip: read the book. Watch the movie. Throw popcorn at the screen.
