100 words are enough to wank about in lotrps
"Explain to me how writing fanfiction is like writing a grocery list!"

"OK, but only because you asked for it."

What's all the fuss about? I thought that ficlet was just riveting. No, really. Look how riveted I am.

Well. It's the first I've ever heard that a drabble has to have a beginning, middle, end, and point. One has to wonder if there's other stuff at work there. I thought her extreme deconstruction of the story was extreme to operatic proportions.

Pssssss [info]bonibaru... Check out the endless splooge and navel-gazing in this post by [info]gabbyhope. Goodness. No one said it's impossible for drabbles to have a point. Can she honestly not see that "possible" and "required" aren't synonymous? How dense is this chick anyway?

Sorry. This was the best I could come up with in 10 minutes, before coffee and still half groggy.

[hangs head in shame]

On Writing Desks and Ravens
(a ficlet in 99 words)
by: yours truly

Jan sat at his desk, finger tapping in thoughtful tattoo. Surely there was a way to pack a story into one hundred words. Point. Meaning. These things drove Jan to write word limited ficlets. “But writing a grocery list can be like high art if only I apply myself, sweating bullets of creative blood!” he exclaimed.

The stuffed raven sat on the edge, one bright glass eye regarding him in silence. A stiffened claw raised in an eternal gesture of grasping, looped small enough to hold a pen, seemed almost to say, “Who cares? Just write, you pretentious fuck.”

~*~

I did get writing desks and ravens stuffed into the same ficlet though, does that count?

My favorite comment from gabbyhope:
"I cannot help being short and confrontational. Why waste words?"

I suppose she used "short" to mean "direct" or "brief" rather than "vertically challenged," but this—combined with an icon of a Hobbit—made me wonder if indeed she should have "wasted" a word or two for clarity.

That was my favorite quote too. "Politeness takes too damn long!"

And now I'm thinking of that scene in The Birdcage between Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. "Thanks to you, I'mthis short,
fat, insecure, middle-aged THING!"/ "... I made you short?"

Okay. I learn something new every day. I had heard of people refering to my little ficlets of 100 words as drabbles and honestly thought it was just a cutesy word used in reference to my stuff. I had always heard it referred to as flash fiction, sudden fiction, micro fiction, postcard fiction, ficlets and vignettes.

After all according to dictionary.com defines drabble as:

drab·ble tr. & intr.v. drab·bled, drab·bling, drab·bles

To make or become wet and soiled by dragging; draggle

Silly me. Apparently not!

Fandom_Wank, you educate me in ways I cannot even begin to enumerate.

Set by the Birmingham University SF Society as thus: a self-contained vignette of exactly 100 words, no more, no less, with up to 15 more words are allowed for the title. Hyphenated words are in dispute. The term originates from a Monty Python skit: "Drabble. A word game for 2 to 4 players. The four players sit from left to right and the first person to write a novel wins." Drabbles started in British SF fandom in the late '80s. A half-drabble is fifty words long; a double drabble is 200 words long.

various silly-ism's from Gabbyhope's (and friends) spooge-j
(Anonymous)
2004-02-26 10:51 pm UTC (link)
oh, agreed, entirely, i merely meant that perhaps a term should be coined for structured pieces of other lengths.

i resist the term 'double drabble' as it implies two drabbles stuck together, which isn't what i write at all.

It has to be a SET. AMOUNT. OF WORDS! No mas! No menos! I hereby suggest that we should call all drabbles of exactly 312 words a "splot".

(I write drabbles) To challenge myself. I actually don't write drabbles--my main fandom's preferred short form is 169-word stories.

See, the challenge is in NOT writing those 69 extra words. Doing nothing is harder than doing something.

As a reader, I judge writers by their shortest work first.

Will fandom never cease to stop masturbating with a hose? It's all about congratulating yourself because you've done the easiest thing. Legions of wank sprang up over someone stating that fanfic writers were better than original writers, now drabbles are more cachet than fics. I can't wait! *rubs hands*

But I have to admire this lady's ability to kick back and wax poetic about how much of a GEEEnius she is with her brisk, challenging, economy of effort words.

if a writer can grab me with a well-written, well-edited drabble, I can assume their longer work will be just as good.

That's like saying that the jacket blurb is hard evidence that the novel is good. Great Cthulu, every bookstore dreams of suckers like this!
