Del Rey manga publishing censorship controversy
Initially I held off from posting this wank report, but there have been further developments to add to its wankiness. So my first report:

Del Rey announced they were starting a manga imprint, licensing several series, including Gundam Seed and some Clamp series. Most people on AnimeonDVD forums seemed optimistic and open-minded about the newcomers with a "wait and see" attitude. Then someone happened to be reading the online diary of Ken Akamatsu, manga-ka of Negima! Magister Negi Magi and noticed how astonished Akamatsu was of the changes required by his American publishers, mostly covering up objectionable displays of skin. Rumors flew all over the place, although the discussion remained remarkably civil, all things considered. Well mostly.

Dallas Middaugh, Director of Manga, Del Rey, stepped into the fray:

In response to the questions about the artwork in NEGIMA Volume 1, we did alter the art slightly in about ten panels, with the full knowledge of the artist. Please be assured that the panel changes do not affect the storyline in any way. These changes were an editorial decision based on our goal as a publishing house to get Ken Akamatsu’s brilliant work into as many U.S. bookstores as possible...

That went over like a lead balloon. Pre-orders have been cancelled and people are questioning whether to pick up the Clamp books, which are supposedly left unscathed. They're pointing out that other series like "Love Hina" are being put into regular bookstores without being edited. The really objectionable stuff like "Battle Royale" or Erica Sakurazawa books get shrink-wrapped. Del Rey was a new player in the manga field, so they've probably lost quite a few new customers in the process from the diehard fans.

The only real fly in this discussion came from Toren Smith of Studio Proteus. He initially posted a reaction to the news. I'm paraphrasing badly from memory but that Del Rey was learning the meaning of the word schadenfreude first hand. Several people I think commented on how bitter Toren sounded, maybe more so with the selling of Studio Proteus. Then he observed:

The entire sub-thread that began with my schadenfreude post has been CENSORED out of existence.
Hmm.
Censorship on a thread about the evils of censorship.

Chris Beveridge, AnimeonDVD owner, countered:

No, it was taken out after your personal attack on another user and the unconstructive and hostile tone it was taking compared to the rest of the thread.

At 26 pages of comments, there appears no end in sight.

UPDATE: Or maybe not. Del Rey changed its mind, making it shrinkwrapped instead and labelled with 16+/explicit content.

And Gravitation doesn't, which I find even more amazing than the fact that it's rated 13+. Hell, I'm 27, and I'm not sure I'm old enough to be reading it.

Gravitation and FAKE are both not wrapped as titles...which caused no end of "Eh?" to my brain, really. So we're to wrap extreme violence and overt het sex, but teh g4y is for everyone?

My take on it is that the people liscencing it didn't actually read it. I mean... Fake gets pretty graphic. Thank god.

Not so far. It's just PG slap-and-tickle, with TV violence.

Yeah, I don't quite get that myself. I'm all for t3h g4y, but there's me and then there's an exec in a boardroom who doesn't want to get phone calls from irate parents - a lot of whom, I expect, would rather their kids read extreme violence and overt het than said g4y. What gives?

I heard some text was edited in the translation, but I have no clue. I don't like the Gravi manga art at all.

In both cases all I saw was some hot and heavy making out with gay sex strongly implied. It's pretty obvious what their doing but it's not 'on screen' for lack of a better term.

And hell I'm happy that folks seem to be accepting that you can show to guys touching each other in a 'more than friends' way and the children of the world won't spontaneously combust.

I'm thankful that the gay is for everyone. When I can't afford any new graphic novels, I just sit down with one in Barnes and Nobles. ^^

Me too. How else do you think I feed my Peach Girl addiction with only buying one volume?
I did the same thing for Mars too XD

Blessed are Borders and Barnes and Noble staff, for they shall leave customers in peace to read shoujo manga and drink coffee. XD

Battle Royale and Erica Sakurazawa doesn't even always get shrink wrapped. I've been to book stores (mostly Borders) where they're on the shelf, no wrapping, just like every other manga.

My guess is that someone just under the age limit got frustrated and ripped off the shrink wrap. Just so they could see the quality of the artwork and depth of character development, of course. ;)

If that can be translated (and yes, it's shrink-wrapped) ANYTHING can.

Forgive me if I totally miss the point, but my response to that is a big "so what?" I don't think adding panties and towels in ten panels is going to totally ruin the entire run of the series.

And my copy of "Between the Sheets" was shrinkwrapped with the "Adult content" sticker.

Between the Sheets wasn't shrink wrapped when I read it in Barnes and Noble. There was a tiny adult content sticker on the back, but otherwise, nothing.

My first thought was "Jeez, if some kid stumbles onto this, please let them be smart enough to not show their parents..."

Power to the people! *cough*
Sorry. I was just waiting for this one to be posted. Been following it XD Pretty cool of Del Rey to change their decision.
I believe the main problem was more "editing = bad precedent" than that many people really *cared* that a few towels were added. Editing makes me twitchy ^^; (Not that I'm planning on buying Negima, but Tsubasa and XXXHolic are both good to go now ^^)

Just wanted to add - find it v. amusing that they're actually going to get *more* orders than if they'd just left it alone in the first place.

Odd, because where I am (Portland, Oregon, USA), I haven't seen *ANY* manga shrinkwrapped. Sometimes they'll have a sticker (not just rating, but for various things, like "From the creator of *other series*" or "As seen on Cartoon Network!"), sometimes a rating will be pre-printed on the cover, but the only shrinkwrapped stuff are bound boxed sets, and no individual volumes.

It's the same in Perth, Western Australia. Depending on where you go, none of the manga is shrinkwrapped, or it's ALL shrinkwrapped so that it stays in mint condition regardless of content. There's no seperation between the 'edgier' manga and the more general-audience stuff as far as shelf placement goes, either.

Then again, manga that isn't based on Beyblades etc. can only be found in comic stores and the occasional Japanese store, and I think most of Perth is still in the 'Who the hell reads comics except smelly fanboys?' state of mind, heh.

Portland has a high Asian population, so that may have something to do with it.

Actually, there *is* an import store where all the manga is shrinkwrapped. But most of their general subject books, magazines, art books, etc, are also shrinkwrapped, so that'd be a company thing rather than a rating system.

Del Rey got other CLAMP series besides Tsubasa and XXXholic? Or just those two? Come to think of it, any word on RG Veda?

Tokyopop has RG Veda...although they haven't said much about it lately >.<
There was a press release about it a month or two ago.
And Tsubasa and XXXHolic is all the CLAMP manga that Del Rey has...I think those two were the only things not licensed really, except for REALLY obscure stuff (provided that Tokyopop really does have Gohou Drug, which is listed in the front of their books but not on their website yet)
