I didn't even know anchovies had crotches
Monk fandom seems to be a smallish, sweet little fandom about a funny, sweet little show. There is some argument about the old versus the new theme song, but nothing mean or flamey towards other fans. I thought, Could this be a wank-free fandom?
Alas, no.
The Museum of Television and Radio (MTR) was to host an event with some of the cast and producers of the show. The event was cancelled at the very last minute because Tony Shalhoub (the star of the show) was ill. Some fans were unhappy. As is the way of wank, other fans got annoyed that some fans were unhappy. And fans got annoyed that fans got annoyed that some fans were unhappy.
Unfortunately, I can't link to individual posts. The thread starts here.
The conflict start off between "extex" and "MonkFanToo". Extex lives in the area where the event was to be held is not that bothered that it was cancelled. MonkFanToo is sad for the people that flew in from out of town and are now out $$$ for it. All is rather civil and people can understand both their perspectives.
So, here we go with extex's reply to a post by MonkFanToo (note, MonkFanToo never really said anything about MTR needing to make the announcement more public, but anyway...)
extex: Exactly how should they have made the decision public?Hire a jet to trail a banner?
Crap happens.Get over it.For every one person turning cartwheels at the chance to see the seminar without Tony there would have been two ****ed it was being held without him. They can't win.
Besides you have no idea how sick Tony is.
If, God forbid ,something were to happen to him ,should they go ahead and have the seminar? You have no idea what is wrong other then he was too ill to attend
Until you know the whole story it is ridiculous to second guess and bad mouth the MTR on behalf of some hypothetical people flying here to see the Monk show
You weren't going ,you aren't out anything
I doubt very seriously the MTR made a judgement call and stiffed the rest of the cast and production team.
MonkFanToo tries to be reasonable.
MonkFanToo: No, the MTR did it the old fashioned way, they called those who bought tickets via the telephone to say the event was canceled because Tony was ill (not realizing how many tickets were sold on e-Bay, this board, and other places); but they obviously did not catch you or others at home since you/they were already driving/flying to L.A. for the event and couldn't be reached. Some never would be reached since others got the tickets and then re-sold them. Also, there are three or four on this board alone who were to attend, and, one, Art (not the gal but the guy), even posted here how he was taking a vacation built around this seminar and flying in... But, too bad, stuff happens, ours is not to question why but to accept whatever is or is not presented. And now, hang our heads for even asking why the seminar could not go on with only the others because Tony is on, what, some deathbed? If the rest of the panel had to rush to his bedside, then of course cancel the thing. But if this is unconfirmed, why can't we ask why the others couldn't go on? And why defend the MTR to the death--what if, god forbid, they did make an error in cancelling it so late? I believe they were unaware of the number of people traveling long distances from OUTSIDE California who were going to attend... Just my thoughts, yours obviously vary.
Another user, "ocpie" makes an observation.
ocpie: Extex: you do raise some interesting and valid points but I don't think you had to bite MonkFanToo's head off when replying to him.
Extex replies to ocpie's reply.
extex: I could care less about how you feel about my post it doesn't change the facts
MFT's whole tone of the post was antagonistic from complaining about Tony's plate being too full to the show being cancelled especially since she was not involved in the MTR show and had not personally even talked to anyone at the MTR.
She had no idea why the show was cancelled only that someone was ill.
She made a post jumping to wild conclusions as to how the MTR should have handled thing without knowing one single fact
It was irresponsible
MonkFanToo gets annoyed extex and lets extex know it.
MonkFanToo: It is really sad that you hold such anger, contempt, and venom over imaginary things you seem to read into various posts--and especially into mine. But your remarks concerning my posts, above, are wildly overdrawn and even madeup...
I knew Tony Shalhoub had the flu (as did his entire family) yesterday morning by way of an e-mail from a family member (you are not the only one with so-called inside info, contacts, and such). I knew the MTR cancelled the event quite late and were calling those who'd purchased tickets for the sold-out event and informing them that it was cancelled because Tony was sick.
Now, my concern, my own upset, is that several fans may have been hurt financially over this turn of events. And, for me, if just one fan is so hurt, it's one fan too many. Unlike you, the expert and pro of everything, I am a fan first and foremost. I knew of at least four flying into L.A. from back east here. I believe it is a fair question to ask, however, as to whether the sold-out event could have gone on as scheduled (whether you approve or not) with the remaining panel and stars. My remarks about Tony's plate getting overly full were BOTH a compliment and a realization that Tony cannot be expected to carry everything--he shouldn't have to...
And, certainly, the MTR could use some suggestions regarding change and improvement in their procedures, ticket sales, canceling of events, and the like...
I regret that ocpie had to take some of your wrath and anger simply because she stated an opinion about my remarks on this thread... Truly, it is a shame you have to go off on mad tangents and tirades including name calling, with belittling insult flinging and such just to somehow demonstrate you are more important, better informed, show biz connected and-or always right (or whatever). It doesn't suit you. But, then, what the hell do I know? And now you go right on with another madeup and embellished tirade about something I've said or mentioned herein...
Meanwhile, "JourneyToX" hasn't seen such a dissatisfied group of people since X-Files fansom.
JourneyToX: I must say that I am appalled to read this board. I haven't seen such a dissatisfied group of people since I read an X-Files newsgroup.
First of all, anybody who buys tickets to an event takes a chance of it being canceled. If you're going to an AC/DC concert and Angus dies, should they still go on because you flew in from Iowa? Do you honestly thing his family should call you and apologize for the "inconvenience"??If you flew in for Sigfried and Roy the night the accident happened, should the show of gone on with out him? When's the last book signing you went to that when the author canceled they still set up a table in his honor? You people need to reassess what is important. One of the actors was sick. The star of the show. The second AD wasn't sick, it was THE STAR OF THE SHOW. THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THE MUSEUM WAS HONORING. At no time would they had even consider still holding the event. And sorry to clue you into this but not one syllable would be mentioned about the "poor fans who flew in just to see him." Hollywood is an industry, not a star trek convention. Tony was sick and needs to take care of himself. Thats whats important. How dare you take offense at your inconvenience because of it. You took your chances buying the tickets especially if you were stupid enough to pay sixteen times their value on ebay. If everything in life was guaranteed, we all would be a whole lot richer.
Secondly, this was an event, at a very reputable museum which I happen to donate money to every year. How dare you put blame on them for it. This wasn't an event being held to honor the fans, it was to honor the cast and crew of the show. Most of the audience is family of the cast and crew. The rest of the audience are industry professionals. You aren't going to be sitting in a room with 150 fans, you're going to be in a room with 50 fans and 100 people who see these people every other day.
Everybody should be ashamed of themselves for suggesting that Tony should feel bad. Don't you think he did? I am sure if Tony could of come, he would of. Understand that and remember it next time you berate him. You were and are owed nothing. Nothing in life is guaranteed and you take your chances on that basis.
Personally, after reading this - I don't think they should reschedule. After reading this and knowing I would be sitting in a room with you people, I would be ashamed my show had such selfish fans.
And regarding MonkFanToo's comment that "And, certainly, the MTR could use some suggestions regarding change and improvement in their procedures, ticket sales, canceling of events, and the like", JourneyToX has a witty retort!
JourneyToX: Monkfan too, certainly everyone could use some suggestions reguarding change and improvment. You especially could use some.
To which, MonkFanToo reponds:
MonkFanToo: Of course, we all do--you might want to start with learning how to spell (or using spellcheck). Nothing ruins a savage flaming (you were obviously put up to here) like spelling simple words such as "color" or "regarding" incorrectly.
To which, JourneyToX reponds:
JourneyToX: Nothing ruins a savage flaming like when you're dealing with a total and utter moron.
To which, MonkFanToo reponds:
MonkFanToo: Exactly, and you should know as you've set the bar high here. You'll crash and burn though...
To which, JourneyToX reponds:
JourneyToX: "Oh I know you are but what am I?"
Spare me, will you please? You're just upset that your idea smells like an anchovies crotch.
To which, MonkFanToo reponds:
MonkFanToo: What idea--is there a shred of some idea of yours somewhere? You are grasping at straws and obviously have nothing to say or discuss now (you're starting to go down...). Oh, try ranting and insulting again--and do tell us what your fab position is at fox.com.
Meanwhile, ocpie returns and attempts to be reasonable by posting a long and reasonable post. However, extex also returns to respond to MonkFanToo's earlier comments.
extex: There was not one single made-up thing in any of my post
Nobody said I had "inside connections"
It's quite easy(as you know) to contact you know who and find out whats going on .
The only contempt being shown here is you toward the show.It was about Monk ,it was for Monk and Tony is the main reason for it's success.
There was absolutely no reason to have the show without him regardless of who flew out there to see it.
Anyone put in a financial bind by flying out here to see it shouldn't have come.It is ridiculous to spend money you can't afford .
It's not like they flew to Omaha ,Nebraska and they were left with nothing to do.
The Oscars are this week ,it's Hollywood and there are tons of things to do.
As for USA and Tony calling the fans to make it all better that is ridiculous.Nobody should have to apologize because they are sick.
They are shooting for a May re-schedule and maybe if we are lucky they will move it to one of the bigger theaters (or the DGA) so more people can attend.
The number for the MTR is 1-310-786-1000
Another user, "Godiva" shows up and posts her opinion in a reasonable manner. Briefly chastises the wankiness, and pretty much sums up stuff with a quote:
Godiva:"Better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Everyone seems to calm down. Extex apologizes. JourneyToX seems to have to throw in one more thing.
JourneyToX:Yes, X-Files fans are much worse but had nine years to built up their resentment. You guys have had, what? Two and a half seasons?
After that, it looks like things die down. Hopefully it will stay that way, but GEEZ!
There's a lot of gems here, but my favorite has to be: "You're just upset that your idea smells like an anchovies crotch."
Ewwwww!
EDIT: Things take on an interesting new dimension. Nickname theft and antagonism that goes back years. .
The real JourneyToX of X-Files fandom arrives having heard of this thread via Fandom Wank (we hav teh powah 2 br1ng f4nd0mz 2getha, omg). She provides a little history and explains the JourneyToX at the Monk Board is *not* her.
Hello, my name is Kimberly Stone and I have to step in here for a moment.
This board was brought to my attention by a friend who saw this thread mentioned at Fandom Wank.
For several years in X-Files fandom, I used the name "JourneyToX." I, however, have never watched "Monk" nor posted on this board.
The person using the name "JourneyToX" has borrowed it from me, certainly without my permission.
I strongly suspect it is a kid named "Jesse" as the "occupation" for "JourneyToX" fits what that kid said he was going to do as a start-off to his "Hollywood Career." The presence of Elaine ("Extex") his friend on this board also supports this theory.
Jesse and Elaine, and their friend Tom, have created a lot of pain for me over the years, but I've happily forgotten their existence for the past two years. It seems they can't forget me. What a bunch of creeps.
I am available at kimonthejourney@yahoo.com if anyone would like to contact me regarding the misappropriation of my name.
I regret any confusion caused by the imposter. I will see what I can do about getting this stopped, but I can't promise success with it.
In the meantime, I ask readers here to remember that anything signed "JourneyToX" is not the work of Kimberly Stone or KimOnTheJourney, as I started signing myself later.
Enjoy your Monk fandom. Sorry for the interruption.
I'm not going to edit this anymore. I thought this was a wank that was about to die, but it looks like one that is just being born :-o
::mind boggles::
