FAP interview wank
This was sent in by a lurker at FictionAlley Park who doesn't have a JF account. GwendolynGrace is shocked and horrified by the recent chat transcript, and tears JKR another asshole:

JKR sucks! I'm a better author than her, and this interview displayed her overwhelming stupidity!

But it was just a bit of harmless snark, really. And if you want me to go off and read great literature, why are you sticking around for a mere children's book?

Anyway, my version is cooler than hers.

Someone stick a pin in this girl's ego, ok? It might just pop and then we'd all be better off.

Actually, there are a lot of people who like the fanfiction better than canon in the Potter fandom. I didn't see her saying she was a better author, I saw her saying she liked her version better. Well, why would she write an AU if she didn't really like it a lot? I think a lot of people who write various AU's in various fandoms feel that way.

I try not to read JKR's interviews, because the facts are that she writes really fun books with plot holes a mile wide that I enjoy reading and trying to plug, but in her interviews, she's a complete bitch to her fans, which irritates me because we are the people who made her rich collectively. Thank goodness it is possible to enjoy something without liking the creator. I mean, if you had to be likeable to sell books, Orson Scott Card and S.M. Stirling, both of whom are even bigger asshats than JKR, would be shit out of luck.

Nooooooo! It's one thing to write them badly in the first place, but then to go and clean everything up? You need a beta-reader very, very badly, madam. Just let us fix it for you. Please.

If you think they're bad, why do you waste your time reading them?

Yeah, that was a funny story. Tell you what, next time? Hire an EDITOR.

Hello? It's JKR's chat, not Anne Rice's.

As I said in my follow-up post, my disappointment stems not from the minutia, but from the overall sense that, as Tentacula Seeds says, the series is becoming less epic as we go along.

Translation: JKR not only contradicted my fanfiction with OotP, but has also reminded me that Draco Malfoy is a git and will not fall in love with Harry/Ron/Hermione/Filch.

I still respect the original, too - that is, she has every right to tell her story the way she wants to tell it.

Maybe because it's her story, not yours, don't you think?

And that, friends, is the beauty of fanfic, but it's also its tragedy. If the original were perfect, we wouldn't feel the need to fic it.

Bullshit.
You write fanfiction because you love the characters, because you wonder about the missing scenes, and the "what if"s, because you want to expand what you find in canon.
If you feel the need to "perfect" it, write an original novel that will take the spotlight away from Harry Potter. But it's easier to play in another's playground, isn't it?

God, there is a reason why I never visit FictionAlley.

Wait, I get it now! I get it! She reads our fansites...and she knows that if she does anything really off beat that any one of us actually got right, we'll be able to prove it. So...maybe she's making the books banal and pedestrian *because* we're so much more creative than she is? So if we all just STOPPED, she'd be able to do whatever she wants? ... Nah, that trick never works. Game on, my children.

Oh my god. OH MY GOD. Jesus Christ, HP fans, they're her characters. It is her story. Much as we all love them dearly, we are just borrowing them. Whether or not you like her writing, or her characters, and even if you don't like her as a PERSON, you still must aknowledge that this is all her creation.

I'm so sick of the anti-JKR crap, honestly.

Draco/Hermione shippers up in arms? What? Eh? Yeah, because a) that was likely to be canon and b) what difference does the fact that it isn't going to be canon make? You're writing fan fiction. You can still write D/Hr fan fiction. The problem is what, exactly?

I can't take a side in that wank. GwendolynGrace is over the top, but I can kind of understand where she comes from.

However the "It's JKR stories and she can do whatever she wants and it's still brilliant" fraction on that thread is as annoying as Gwen.

Is there nobody sane and in between these extremes?

Seriously, what is wrong with this fandom? Has it gotten so big that it thinks it self above canon all of a sudden? Write your own freaking story and perfect it, for crying out loud! The woman is writing 800 pages per book, is she really expected to remember everything off the top of her head?

And as for her being rude/arrogant towards her fans? If I was her and people kept asking me if "Liek OMG! r Darco(his so cutE!1!!)& Hermi evah gonna hookup??!!! b cause tath wud b so cool!!1123!!!" I'd go "Bitch have you read the book?" in an instant.

This whole thing reminds me of the Tolkien fans who dig "secret messages" out of the books (like "He really wanted to write Frodo and Sam as gay, but was scared of The Establishment") and then write fanfiction with those "messages" front and center as the "way it was meant to be."

Just like writing the "real thing!" Only, you know, not.

i pity j.k. rowling sometimes, simply because there are so many people out there who have decided how the series should run (and will run, if she wants to dodge the lynch mob). the whole point of fanfiction is that it offers you the chance to create your own endings, your own relationships, your own twists on the plotline - wouldn't the whole procedure become rather dull if the books conformed perfectly to your every whim? if these people don't like what she has to say, the answer is simple: create a strong, believeable loophole (i cannot possibly emphasize strong and believeable enough here, i hate outright canon rape as much as the next person). that's what fic is about, in my mind.

my, a whole comment without snark. i'm losing my touch.

So, so late on this one.

What's funniest about it, for me, is that GG is a veteran inhabitant of her own little fairy world and an incurable fic-whore. I remember reading posts from her in the past, on a community I belong to but where she was almost completely unknown to us, and she'd post five paragraphs from her fics as proof of a canon point. And her signature was always long, and full of links to her fics. So this wank wasn't a big surprise.

Also not surprising is the wank in the comments. Jesus, we HP fans really are a fucking wanky lot.

Dear Lord.

HP, thou art spoiled.

Try writing from a television series, or a monthly comic where the writer and editor change ever year and contradict themselves. Welcome to fandom - you get jossed, your favourite character dies, things you like get retconned. (Or, like me, your favourite character miraculously comes back from the dead because the writer of another title brings him up without checking whether he was, um, available. And then, in your other fandom, your fic gets completely jossed by the Russian space program.) Either suck it up, figure out a way around it/blithely ignore it and keep going or run away crying. Those are your options.

I love me some Draco, because I like playing with selfish, twisted fucks who got raised all wrong. And I'm gonna keep liking him and playing with him even if JKR comes around to my house and tells me personally that Draco will never, ever fuck Justin Finch-Fletchley. (No kidding, Jo, but wouldn't it be neat if he did?) Because I enjoy that, and I'm not arrogant enough to assume that my master vision is so perfect that it doesn't violate canon six ways from Sunday. Sure, sometimes it's fun to write a story that could slot perfectly into canon, or gives another perspective of canon events, but your life is not, like, OVER if something contradicts you later.

And if you're not a Draco fangirl because of Tom Felton then what she says obviously doesn't apply to you, does it? I'm certainly figuring it doesn't apply to me and will be doing the dance of ultimate superiority over vapid teenies any minute now.

I go to sleep and the HP fandom explodes in pretentious wank. There must be some sort of self preservation off-switch in my brain that enables me to miss every single one of them. I think I should be grateful, possibly.

Thing is, I have very very strong opinions regarding JKR. One being that she is extremely overrated and that she needs a beta or seven. It may be that Marion Zimmer Bradley spoilt me rotten with her Darkover series, but I can't stand JKR's flat characterisation and I can't stand her plot black holes.

This is somewhat sharpened by some of her rabid fans' attitude, a la, "SHE IS GOD AND DON'T YOU SODDING DARE CRITICISE HER COULD YOU DO BETTER YOURSELF YOU JEALOUS CUNT WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE GO AWAY!". Which I get. A lot.

And it's unfair. Because I actually like HP. Or better, I like the potential HP has and I hate that I feel JKR is actually stifling it with cardboard cutouts of heroes and villains alike and her rigid good/evil segregation. If she's writing books for children it's a bad influence. If she really believes these could be adult books then she has a lot of reading to do. Maybe she'd grasp the notion of motives or personality. I think it might help.

Now, most of my current wanking comes from her treatment of Percy and her dismissing "I'm afraid so" when talking about his free will in regards of his recent family decisions. And fuck, JKR, Percy is right. I don't care what you want us to believe; that he is an evil fucker, a bore, an asshole traitor, a bastard, a wanker, a useless sycophant or a gibbering idiot. Because he's not. And I know you want us to believe the Weasleys are magnificent and that Molly is the mother goddess her-fucking-self and that Arthur is the silly father with a heart of gold and you try really really hard. But they aren't.

And it was entirely Percy's right to leave a family that has always treated him like dirt. Especially after Arthur told him he was either an idiot or a traitor to his face. Excuse me, Mr. Weasley, but your son managed to get the position you pushed him all his life to reach and you react like he's the scum of the fucking earth? Oh, but you are good and he is *hiss* ambitious and that must mean he's ready to hand your collective ass over to Fudge or Voldemort or whomever because he is obviously the bad apple and EEEVVVIIIILLLL.

Bitch.

Don't get me started on the way Molly treats Ron and the twins, and how they, in return, treat each other and Percy. It's horrid. They're hateful to each other.

And still the fandom claims JKR, the Goddess, created One Big Happy Weasley Family and that we should all wish to be part of such beauty and goodness. Bitch, please. No, thank you. And they can't seem to grasp the fact that Draco, evil and misguided as he is, is actually much happier than the Weasleys or that the Malfoys are the better parents.

God, sorry.

This was... random. I know. I apologise.

*offers tissues to clean up the spooge*

Sorry?

"Actually, there are a lot of people who like the fanfiction better than canon in the Potter fandom. I didn't see her saying she was a better author, I saw her saying she liked her version better. Well, why would she write an AU if she didn't really like it a lot? I think a lot of people who write various AU's in various fandoms feel that way."

I think it was the whole tone of this post that was particularly wanky and offensive. This author wasn't saying just that she liked her version better, she was actively implying that her version WAS better. She was also actually very rude.

I am not surprised that there are some who get the impression that JKR is sometimes offhand if some of the so called 'fans' give this impression. I wouldn't blame JKR one bit if she gave people like this pointless jerk Gwendolen Grace some free advice on sex and travel! The author herself was actaully kind and patient in chat particularly to the children who asked questions - yes I know that some of them might have seemed foolish to GG, and the countless others like her, who have nothing other to do with their time other than write pointless fanfiction - but if idiots like this took that tone with me then I would stick their questions straight in the bin in lieu of somewhere more appropraite and colourful! So what she didn't want to give her plot away, who can blame her? What did these lame brains expect when she had 16,000 questions to answer most of them badly spelled or in textspeak and at least several thousand wanting to know who Harry was going to shag?

Fanfiction can be great fun but you have got to accept that that is all it is and at the end of the day JK Rowling is creating the plot even if she does slip up from time to time and even if she makes your treasured fanfic AU - Awwww. I can feel no sympathy for GG and the other pathetic people like her who just don't like to be told they are wrong. Time to lose that big chip on your shoulder dear.

Well, it's nice to see that HP fandom is striving valiantly to catch up with LotR again.

Personally, I think that JKR's ethical sense falls way down there on the scale between C.S. Lewis and the average root vegetable, but as long as there are people around promoting those 'not thinking things through = teh virtuous' tropes I'll always have something to mock.

But the really interesting question being obscured by the shouting on both sides is, should fandom and criticism overlap or remain separate spheres? I tend to think that every fan should also be an insightful critic to the best of his or her means, but I'd be a liar if I said I was immune to the pleasure of just going along for the ride with a frankly manipulative or inconsistent storyline. But sometimes people seem to act as though fans should only do the latter.
